Sundance: An Inconvenient Truth Q & A - Al Gore on fire! No, really.
Filed under: Documentary, Sundance, Festival Reports
Yesterday morning, at the practically unforgiveable hour of
8:30AM, I went to a screening of An Inconvenient Truth, a documentary about global warming. Al Gore, who is
featured prominently in the film, was on hand for a Q&A after. Sadly, I have no pics of the Q&A, because as I
stood to take some I was accosted by a Sundance volunteer who hissed "No pictures!" at me. I looked around in
confusion at the hundreds of flash bulbs going off around me. "Um....but this is a Q&A". "They told
me NO pictures," she insisted. I pointed out that everyone else was taking them, but the logic of
this failed to penetrate. "No pictures!" Okay, so no pics.
The Q&A itself was fantastic. Here's the thing about Al Gore: when he speaks, he's either he's so hot he's sizzling, or so boring he's a one-man sleep aid. Fortunately for me (because I definitely would have fallen asleep if he had shown up in his Boring Al persona) he was on fire yesterday morning, and by the time he was done the crowd was ready to go march on Washington. Here's a brief summary. Gore started out by saying, "Young people led the way in the Civil Rights Movement and are beginning to lead the way on this issue (global warming)...when I say this is a moral issue as well as a political one, it is to unite Republicans as well as Democrats, conservatives as well as liberals, to join together on this cause."
Gore went on to talk about how he had taken a course in college back in the sixties from the first scientist who measured carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, and how he developed an interest in the subject and has been researching it ever since. Gore said that when he went to Congress he started talking to politicians about global warming and brought environmental scientists in for hearings, and how he fervently believed that once the politicians heard the truth about global warming, they would be inspired to do something about it. They weren't.
He also talked about Jim Hanson, one of the scientists he has worked with in researching global warming, who says we only have about 10 years before we reach the "tipping point" - that point at which we no longer have as much ability and opportunity to stop the damage and change things, and reverse global warming. "Assuming that's the dead-on truth," Gore said, "then what does that mean to you? What are the implications? What impact does that have on what you do as a citizen of this earth?"
The most poignant moment of the Q&A came in the form of a question from a young boy: "Mr. Gore, after you're done saving the earth, will you run for president again? Gore got momentarily choked up by the question, then composed himself and answered, "Son, I like to think of myself as a recovering politician. (cue laughter from the crowd) This is my mission now." Then he got all fired up like a Baptist preacher, pounding his fist for emphasis. "It's you and the kids of your generation who have to carry this," he told the boy. "Make the grownups look you in the eye and tell you they don't care that they're destroying your planet."
Gore wrapped up the Q&A with an appeal. "This is a planetary emergency," he said emphatically. "And as hard as it is to believe it, we should see it as a privilege to be a part of this generation, to take on this challenge. People, when they are exposed to the truth of this, immediately say, 'ok', and want to make a change."

Did you tell Gore that he needs to lay off the twinkies? Or maybe inquire as to how obese people contribute to global warming? Just curious.
You are a sheep for listening to their no photo rubbish.

I think Al Gore has a GOOD MOOT POINT! He's not making it up, and neither is the "global warming" process making itself up either! Mankind is ALL involved thus all generations have got to band together to keep the Earth "alive" and not JINK the issue!

People do need to pay attention to the global warming. Look outside-here in Kentucky the weather does change alot, but I can't remember it being this mild & warm in January. It usually is cold, raining or snow/ice. Look at the birds-they are already back-there is something going on but as it seems Americans don't pay attention to problems until it hits full force. Now look at your children & grandchildren playing, do you want them to endure the greediness of the previous generation & suffer? No matter who tells us about global warming-Al Gore or one of the care bears-it is time we listen.

I am glad you gave Gore the attention he deserves. He is a person who has the platform to be able to spread the word, worldwide, about the ways that global warming can be reduced.

We all know that Al Gore is right, global warming is real. The fact that many voters didn't vote for Gore or do not believe he won the election in 2000 does not change the reality that global warming is a serious problem and Bush and the Republicans are not and will not do anything about it. This is a MORAL issue! We, the current generation, have squandered the earth's resources and failed to leave this place better than we found it.

I would like to see Al Gore run for President in 2008.
He received 500,000 more votes in 2000 than George Bush...believe he could well win by a plurality of
5 million votes in 2008..Nixon lost to JFK by a slim margin in 1960 and came back in 1968 to defeat Hubert Humphrey in another close election.

Those who say that global warming isn't a crisis aren't paying attention. The polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate which will dramatically change the ocean currents. If you all thought that Katrina was bad, it is only going to get worse. Much, much worse. And we are totally unprepared for what is coming. We need Al Gore, someone who understands the crisis, has the experience and the passion to do something about it. We need him to run in 2008, before it is too late.

Many People do not realize or remember when running for President, AL GORE AND TIPPER had to have a photo op for his campaign. Whoever was in charge had to provide him with between 4 and 5 MILLION gallons of water to take pictures of Gore and Tipper floating down the river in a canoe with the water supporting their canoe. Al Gore, a REAL WINNER.
We certianly don't need him being in charge nor do we need Hillary. The news media didn't publish that fact did they.

Gore is on top of his subject matter,as usual (just as, regardless of the right wing scoffing, he was on top of the possibilities of the internet before anyone else in national leadership.)
Just noticing that the Republican Right responders are resorting to derision and name-calling in this forum instead of cogent argument, again as usual.

Al Gore is exactly what we need to turn this nightmare around. He was born for public service and can actually articulate his thoughts.Thats because he spends some time actually thinking about the problems that face us all.Global warming or the impact that massive industrial and auto emmissions has on our planet is no joke and for it to be treated as such by this Texas clubhouse gang is just another of many insults to my and others intellegence.I'd like to see a Gore/Clark ticket in 08 tackle this and many other issues.

Derision and name calling is the mainstay of the liberal left. There is a big difference between claiming to invent the internet and recognizing the possibilities. The vice-perp wasn't the only one see the possibilities. The man cannot tell the truth. He simply cannot be trusted.
