SAG goes crazy! Sort of.
Filed under: Drama, Romance, Awards, Newsstand, Trophy Hysteric
The members of the Screen Actors Guild last night
refused to bow to awards-related peer pressure, dammit. Brokeback Mountain? Totally not that good. (And some of their best friends - not to
mention the guy played by their best actor winner - are gay, so just shut up about that homophobia crap, alright?)
Instead of continuing to heap praise on the gay cowboys, SAG spread their awards around, and not a single one ended up
in the hands of anyone associated with Ang Lee's film.Despite ignoring Brokeback entirely, the SAG awards resembled the Golden Globes in other ways, namely in their choices for best actor (Philip Seymour Hoffman), actress (Reese Witherspoon), and supporting actress (Rachel Weisz) - and they also honored Sandra Oh for her work on Grey's Anatomy, as the Hollywood Foreign Press did. The other movie awards went to Oh's Sideways costar Paul Giamatti (best supporting actor for Cinderella Man) and the cast of Crash, which was voted best ensemble.
Though the absence of Brokeback is initially shocking, the film hasn't exactly been piling up acting awards - it's been Lee and the movie in general that win. So, in that way, SAG actually followed the script more closely than it would initially appear. While Heath Ledger has showed up on all the of lists of best actor nominees, he's only been the winner of a few regional (New York, San Francisco) critics' awards. If the Academy follows this trend, while we can be pretty sure his name will be included tomorrow morning when the nominees are revealed, a win seems increasingly unlikely.

Wow such harsh comments by people who have no clue what these people feel or what they have to endure just to live in this fucked up world we have now. If you could live in thier shoes for a day then maybe you might understand how it feels to have the feelings that they were BORN with.
How dare you say that they are sinners it is You who are the sinners for it is said we are all created equal.
We are supposed to love everybody no matter the color or personel preference's they have in a life partner. Besides its none of anyones business what an individual person feels for another Person. Its called privacy and the present government is doing their best to do away with our personal rights. So take this and think on it I hope it makes you all think of others before you judge them.

Thanks to the SAG for not giving in to the Brokeback craze. I am a 41 year old lesbian, and I couldn't have been more disappointed with the movie. Beautiful scenery, no passion. Just a couple drunks having sex. Never do they admit love for eachother and they both deny being gay at all (even to eachother). Not the way I want any community portrayed.

Its a real shame we make such a mockery of our personal values. For those of us who consider this a XXX movie, and would like this kind of personal conduct not to be shown to our kids in the news and everything we hear about on tv. Those had to be California cowboys. For those of of us who are real cowboys, if someone wants to be that way they should keep it to themselves.I'm really tired of hearing about this behavior that would have gotten a man hanged less than a 100 years ago. Where are our values ?

I am quite suprized that the gay movie didn't get any awards, because the Hollywood Left usually will do anything to piss off "Middle America".

I hope Brokeback Mountain wins nothing else and I know God and a million others are with me on this one. What is the world coming to? It's bad enough that this is reality, then to show it on the big screen? Shame on Hollywood and major talk show hostesses, too, for having the crew on and applauding it. Just 'cause you have friends who are gay doesn't mean you should lose sight of the fact that, based upon how much you (apparently) read the Bible, this is inappropriate unnatural behavior.

WOW.I am so surprised at your comment!! But I agree whole hartedly!!!....I am so sick and tired of being BASHED because I didn't like a particular movie or TV shows episode about GAY life. If it was a well made, acted device, I would have loved it. But I am so sick of being made to feel that I should like it and support it JUST because it represents someone elses IDEALS!! Thank you for being HONEST!!!!!!

I was in shock when they anounced Crash as best picture. I must admit I like Brokeback very much but was expecting much more from it. I so want to see it honored at the Oscars as well as Jake Gylenhall. I am a 33yo gay male and I disagree with Beverly. It was more than a couple of drunks having sex. If it was about two Lesbian truck driver's in the 60's I am sure she would have love'd it.

"Brokeback Mountain" is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Yes, it portrays two oppressed homosexual men, but there is so much more there. Here are two men who did not live out their lives in the manner that they wished for fear of social repercussions and societal banishment. I fear that there are many people who have lived this tragedy. How many of us have married the "wrong" person because it seemed right at the time and now there are children involved? How many of us fear reaching for our far fetched dreams because we need to pay a mortgage? How many of us will go to our graves having lived, but not the life we wanted?

Reactions to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN are inevitably going to be personal . . . and individual. I have straight friends who were overwhelmed by it, and others who could not understand why many found it moving. And I have exactly the same range of reactions among my gay friends. As a gay parent, about the same age as Jake and Ennis would be today, I found it devastating; the most moving film I've seen since the initial release of CHINATOWN. But again, that's my individual response.

How did AOL get past the FCC rules when it published a photo of President Bush and Vice President Cheney on a fake poster titled "DUMBFUCK MOUNTAIN" ? This poster could be seen by children of all ages and was very offensive to my family.I took the time to report it to the FCC. Shame on AOL.

Homosexuality is still abnormal psychological behavior. There is nothing normal or natural about it.

If anyone thinks the behavior on Brokeback is XXX (see above) perhaps they don't have Showtime or HBO or Cinemax. Children can check out violent murders, explicit sex, rape any time of the day... (without the parents having any idea) Worried about values and what is shown to children and families? Take a look at Maury Povich, Jerry Springer and the white trash that is "highlighted" on a daily basis. These people don't even know the fathers of their children.
Get real, not homophobic....

I thought the movie was very thought provoking. Any time a movie causes discussion about controversial issues, then it is worth seeing. The writer above who says she is a lesbian needs to remember that it was 1963 and these men lived in small towns in Texas and Wyoming. As was depicted in the movie, to openly admit to homosexuality was a death sentence. Hopefully, Oscar will be much kinder to the movie than the SAG.

I am glad Brokeback didn't win because frankly I don't think it was that good.......Walk the line was phenonmenal and they did all THEIR OWN singing unlike Jamie Fox in Ray who took the lead actor role award last year.....I think Reese Withersopoon and Joaquin Pheonix should be the Big winners on Oscar Night......They were great and a movie that was entertaining as well as touching.

It is still going to be a while before movies like Brokeback mountain going to be in the mainstream. If you really wanted to know all the dirty secret of hollywood and I have many friends who have real personal experience in Hollywood, they can support what went on is generally the stories of Henry Willson. One of the most exploitative man and many alike in hollywood. Do you think they will out themselves to get brokeback any recognition? No way....

I think it's great that Brokeback is stirring up all these conversations. It's about time that people of this country realize that being gay is an extremely difficult struggle and is certainly not a choice as some seem to think. I have been gay for over 40 years and most of that time has been in secret - fearing that co-workers and others will realize the truth about who I am. Being gay is not a choice - it's something that was handed to me just like blue eyes and brown hair!
If this movie causes some to accept that denying gays the same rights as every other citizen is really discrimination, it will have been well worth it!
