Oscar Nominations Live Blog

It's that time again – in roughly 15 minutes, a couple of sleepy-eyed actors will breeze through a list of names, and millions of dollars in advertising captial will thus be validated or negated. Oh, and a few talented artists will probably also get some recognition. Refresh this page, like, constantly, because as the names come in, I'll be typing them in. And don't forget to bitch and praise in the comments!
8:19 Predictions? Some lazier corners of the media, bored of the Brokeback hype, are using Crash's Sunday win at the SAG Awards as reason enough to declare the gay cowboys' reign to be over. I don't buy it – what do you think?
8:33 I'm watching the coverage on the TODAY show, and they're saying the announcement isn't happening until 8:40? WTF? Is it on E! yet?
8:39 Katie Couric – looking like a grandma in a giant blue ... thing – is sitting with Dave Karger from Entertainment Weekly. He says Walk the Line is gonna get cut out of everything but acting races. Katie throws to Matt in Washington, who she calls Mr. Hollywood.
8:40 Sid Gannett, president of AMPAS, is presenting with Mira Sorvino
8:41 Here they are:
Supporting Actresss - Amy Adams, Junebug; Catherine Keener, Capote; Frances McDormand, North Country; Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardner; Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
Supporting Actor – George Clooney, Syriana; Matt Dillon, Crash; Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man; Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain; William Hurt, History of Violence
Actress - Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents; Felicity Huffman, Transamerica; Keira Knightley, Pride and Prejudice; Charlize Theron, North Country; Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote; Terrence Howard, Hustle and Flow; Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain; Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line; David Strathairn, GD&GL
Director - Ang Lee, Bennett Miller, Paul Haggis, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg
Original Screenplay - Crash, GNGL, Match Point, Squid and the Whale, Syriana
Adapted Screenplay - Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Constant Gardener, History of Violence, Munich
Foreigh - Don't Tell, Merry Christmas, Paradise Now, Sophie Scholl, Tsotsi
Animated - Howl's Moving Castle, Corpse Bride, Wallace and Gromit
Best Picture - Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, Good Night and Good Luck, Munich
8:50 To paraphrase the legendary Robert Evans: Suprises? There were a few. Terrence Howard, hot off his stint on the Sundance 2006 dramatic jury, pimped his way to a nod. History of Violence came out stronger than expected, with 2 major nominations, and it's nice to see Jake Gyllenhaal finally get some recognition for his showier-than-Ledger's work in Brokeback Mountain. But most striking, is the resurrection of Steven Spielberg and Munich. Left-for-dead after its Golden Globes almost-shutout and that whole BAFTA snafu, it popped up here as a real contender. Capote is in a similar boat: a film previously thought to have little general support made an appearance this morning in virtually every major category.
Are you stunned? Pissed? Ecstatic? Let us know.

I think 'Crash' is going to end up being the "safe way to go" for a lot of Aacademy voters... if it is nominated for BP.

Some years the story changes from the nominations to the Awards. That's how "Shakespeare in Love" beat "Saving Private Ryan" and how "Million Dollar Baby" beat "The Aviator."
I'm pulling for "Crash."

I'm so happy for Woody getting his 21st nomination and 14th for screenplay.
Munich nominated for Best Picture instead of Walk the Line. That's a surprise there. Amy Adams deserves to get nominated. I'm very happy for her as well.
6 for Brokeback, 5 for Capote...No Walk the Line for best picture, no Cache, no David Cronenberg, no Kung Fu Hustle, no King Kong, no Fernando Meirelles, no New World or Terrence Malick whatsoever...
I'm happy with some, I'm dissapointed with others...

The strange thing about the History of Violence noms, though, is that Maria Bello seemed the most obvious to recognize there. Also, I was really hoping that Michael Haneke would get the foreign film best director nom that shows up occasionally.
For the most part I'm pretty bored with this year's selection. There isn't a film on there I loved. Performances, yes, but films, no.

good to see hustle and flow get in that category, too.

Does Hollywood really have the balls to reward true honesty (Brokeback Mountain), in the face of a dishonest government and a dishonest publishing industry??

Best Score or Cinematography should go to Memoirs of a Geisha. Brokeback is an incredible movie, and if you havent seen it, don't knock it. Get over your homophobic self and see what it really is about....love. Crash really deserves a lot of recognition and if anything, hopefully its nominations will have people who may not have seen it go out and rent it. While I think Phoenix and Witherspoon deserve their best actor nods, I must admit that the movie is not up to par for best movie of the year. Didn't we see the same "story" in RAY? How many more musician stories will we see where they were womanizing, drug and alcohol-using wrecks who finally prove their talents and overcome?

A bit of a joke, as ever, but I hope the better films on the list (A History of Violence, Hustle and Flow) beat out the turkeys (Munich, Crash).
Spielberg nominated for best director again? What on earth is that about? Sigh.
Saddest omission? Probably Kung Fu Hustle from the Foreign Film category.
I would suggest Elizabethtown for screenplay, but I don't want to get lynched.

Lou, Um, ok. Do you think the movie sucks or do you feel that there is a more deserving winner?
I thought it was a great movie.
I'm a little surprised that Squid and Whale didn't get more noms.

Interesting... Clooney was nominated both for directing and for an acting award. Has that ever happened before?

Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood & Kevin Costner, off the top of my head, but those were all for the same movie. (Reds, Unforgiven & Million Dollar Baby, and Dances with Wolves, respectively.) Beatty was also nominated as a screenwriter for Reds. Orson Welles, too, I bet.

Add: Woody Allen for Annie Hall and Laurence Olivier for Hamlet.
