I agree with Ebert that "Crash" has Dickensian elements, elements that many novelists and films require to move along the plot line. "Crash," however, is significant in that the sentimentality of a Dickens novel is at a minimum, and there is the grace of redemption and the pain of irony in "Crash"that most Dickens' novels do not have.

HAVING SEEN TWO OF THE NOMINATED FILMS - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN AND CRASH, HANDS DOWN THE BEST STORY IS THAT TOLD IN CRASH.
WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE COMPARISON IN THEM TO NINE LIVES AND TRAFFIC - THE TOPIC IS RIGHT ON TARGET IN TODAY'S SOCIAL CLIMATE. SURE-TRAFFIC SORT OF WRAPPED EVERYBODY'S LIVES TOGETHER IN A PRETTY LITTLE BOW AT THE END - BUT I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT NOT A WHOLE LOT OF US CAN RELATE TO A DRUG DEALER, A DRUG ADDICT AND THE NARCS TRYING TO STOP IT ALL.
THE EVERYDAY "BUMPS" ALONG THE ROAD TO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS ARE THE THINGS ALL OF OUR LIVES ARE MADE UP OF. THERE IS NO BLACK AND WHITE IN BLACK AND WHITE! PEOPLE'S LIVES AND THOUGHTS AND MOTIVATIONS ARE MULTIDIMENSIONAL AND RIGHTLY PROTRAYED IN THIS FILM. MY HATS OFF TO THE WRITERS AND ACTORS WHO REALLY GAVE EVERY VIEWER NEARLY TWO HOURS TO CONFRONT THESE COMTEMPORARY ISSUES.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN WAS CONVERSELY AN ABOMINATION! OF ALL THE GAY STORIES THAT COULD BE TOLD AND TOLD WELL -THIS ONE BARES NOT ONE HINT OF THE RELATIONSHIP THESE TWO MEN SHARED - IT LACKED IN CHARACTER PORTRAYAL - IT WAS BLATANTLY SHALLOW IN THE DEPICTION OF THE "LOVE" THAT EXISTED BETWEEN THESE TWO MEN; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEATH LEDGER AND HIS WIFE WAS LAUGHABLE. I DON'T KNOW OF ANY WOMAN WHO WOULD LET HER HUSBAND LEAVE ON A TRIP WITH A MAN SHE'D JUST SEEN HIM ENGAGE IN A PASSIONATE LIP LOCK WITH. EVEN MORE UNBELIEVEABLE IS THAT SHE WOULD CONTINUE TO PRETEND THE NON-EXISTENCE OF IT FOR YEARS UNTIL SHE WAS HAPPILY MARRIED TO ANOTHER MAN. THEN SHE LETS HIM HAVE IT WITH BOTH BARRELS. GAY MEN DON'T JUST SUDDENLY COME TO THE FACT THAT THEY'RE GAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AFTER A FEW SHOTS OF WHISKEY AND BECAUSE IT'S COLD! THAT'S JUST AN INSULT. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY WAS EXCELLENT - THE ACTING WAS GOOD - BUT THE FACT IS THAT THE GAY POPULATION (AND THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM) - WAS REALLY DONE A DISSERVICE IF BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN IS TO BE LABLED THE BREAKOUT MOVIE!

Crash is contirved and has a Dikenesque look and feel. It does, however, have a message that is relavent wrapped in a tight script with words delivered by a talented cast. It should be a must see for all Americans.

I notice that the "Best Original Song" nominees list only 3 titles, instead of the usual 5. Meaning that the Santaolalla/Taupin song "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" (from "Brokeback Mountain") which earned the Golden Globe, was snubbed. Hmm....
