New Cars spot - is this movie going to be awful?
Filed under: Animation, Comedy, Fandom, Family Films, Movie Marketing
Like a handful of other studios, Pixar has revealed its big Super Bowl spot - an ad for Cars - a
bit ahead of its appearance during the game. Though the always-enthusiastic folks at AICN have labeled the teaser the
film's "best preview yet," I have to say that I beg to differ. If anything, it leaves me even more worried
about the movie. To this point, I've loved every single thing Pixar has done, so I'm really trying to reserve judgement on Cars. That said, though, it's getting harder and harder for me to stay hopeful. Pixar's films have always been uncommonly witty, endearing, and I daresay magical. But Cars? From everything the studio has shown us so far, it looks dumb, obvious, and totally lacking in the charm that has been such a key element of every other Pixar production. So what the hell is going on? And can some reassure me, please? Anyone? Bueller?

Did not see the preview, but many of the naysayers of the Disney/Pixar deal say that the main problem with it is that Pixar will inevitably have a flop. And with only one movie every two years, a flop could be considerably costly to Disney. It will happen, though.

Yeah, it's scary. Very much a DreamWorks concept: Doc Hollywood/Northern Exposure meets the Chevron talking cars. The Japanese trailer shows more footage, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. It almost feels like what would happen if they didn't stop production and overhaul the story, as they often claim to do.

They can't all be winners. This one could be their first flop. The preview didn't do anything for me and just made me realize how stupid the concept really is, just trying to cater to the NASCAR crowd like that other flop "Herbie: Reloaded" did. So sad. You only get a Pixar movie every couple years and it's sad we'll have to wait another two years for another Pixar movie to come along and wash the bad aftertaste Cars may leave us with this Summer.

I don't know how you can tell anything from that trailer - unlike most H'wood trailers, it doesn't come close to telling the story. I think this film will aim at a lower age bracket than "The Incredibles," which will disappoint those who loved Pixar's last film, but doomsaying is premature.

the rumor was that pixar was pissed at disney for not extending the deal so they purposely were making it crappy. now that the companies have merged, they're doing their best to make it good

No, no, cd, now that they've merged that's going to be the trend.
And for the record, they weren't pissed at Disney not extending the deal; Disney tried long and hard to lure them back, and Pixar tried long and hard to get away (everyone but Steve Jobs, that is). They were pissed at Disney's poor treatment during the deal, and Disney's plan to make a non-Pixar, direct-to-video Toy Story 3. This project has now been axed (possibly the only good decision that will ever come out of the merger).
