Opus Dei distances from Da Vinci
Filed under: Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, Sony, Newsstand
The New York Times has a piece up about how Roman Catholic
organization Opus Dei has PR wheels in overdrive trying to distance itself from the upcoming film The Da Vinci Code. The book (and film) features a psychotic albino
monk named Silas (played by Paul Bettany) who is affiliated with Opus Dei, and depicts the secretive
group as a powerful cult. According to the Times piece, Opus Dei leaders even contacted Sony Pictures last year, asking
that any mention of the group be removed from the film, to no avail.
Opus Dei's website has an entire section devoted to The Da Vinci Code, which answers a number of issues presented in the book as factual. For instance, the Opus Dei site declaims the existence of a monastic order within the group, refutes any suggestion that it is a cult, and denies having any wealth or power to speak of (well, except for that $2.8 billion in assets and power positions in the Vatican).
It's not all bad news for Opus Dei, though. The group has had significant publicity from the book and film (and isn't it true there's no such thing as bad publicity?), and the interest spurred by The Da Vinci Code has paved the way for Doubleday to publish an upcoming book, The Way, a collection of writings by the group's founder, Father Josemaría Escrivá, who was canonized for sainthood in 2002.

You should ask James Frey that question. :-/

Politics has made a mockery of religion; I doubt this film is going to do any "damage". Besides, I thought the purpose of art was to open dialog, which is the opposite of grandstanding political door slamming. In these United States, we're supposed to have checks and balances--no snickering, please! When your religious institutions and government entities become corrupt or dictatorial, something like the Da Vinci Code is called for to slap us back to the fulcrum.

We have all heard of The Holy Grail. Most think of it as a goblet that held the blood of Christ shed upon the cross. This goblet was said to hold the presence of Christ and have mystical powers. But consider the following: would not a child of Jesus and the Magdalene be a vessel filled, quite literally, with the blood of Christ? The most ancient stories of the Grail call it by the name, Sangreal, which means Royal Blood. And all the early Grail legends refer to "the Grail Family". In an ancient text called the Perlesvaus, the Grail consists of a changing sequence of images, the first being a crowned king crucified, and the second being a child. The Essene scrolls even give us the name of the child of Jesus and Mary Magdalene; his name was Gebiya. And guess what Gebiya means in Hebrew? Goblet!

Religion causes wars, fear, and boycotts to movies. I dont like the fact that religious groups try to run everyones life and their practice is preaching fear. People should just live their lives, try to be good people and worry about the end of it all when its all over. Live life day by day, and see whatever movie you want to see. No one ever said this movie IS WHAT HAPPEND! They just said hey this is a movie and just like everyother movie see it if you want.

The book is a mockery of both the historical Jesus and the spiritual issues that bring christianity together. It is also filled with anti-catholic rethoric that does not stands a chance of serious scrutiny, much less historical value. The "factual" information lacks credibility at all levels of religious or historical truthfullness. If the movie follows the shallow research made by the author of the book all we can look for is the continuation of this back and forth propaganda to bolster the revenues and give a mediocre book a stand it does not really has. This falls into the Jack Chic kind of literature.

As a Catholic priest I read and appreciated Dan Brown's book for what it is: A NOVEL. It was filled with intrigue and was well-written even if it was what I call "fluff" reading. It is my opinion, the reason so many are upset with the book is that Mr. Brown listed so many theological and historical "facts" that were not what they were protayed to be. Those not aware of the historical existence of myths about Mary Magdalene, the workings of the Roman Catholic Church, or the nature of Opus Dei in the decades since its creation in the 20th century were easily seduced by these so-called facts that and led into a form of gnosticism that believes it alone has the truth that emanates from God. Sadly, Dan Brown is no historian and less of a theologian. He is, however, a good weaver of tales in what was just a novel. So read it as a novel and not a theogocial treatise or history of Christianity, my dear people.

There has always been speculation regarding Christ having possibly married. Considering it was, to say the least, extremely odd for a Rabbi not to marry in that time, it is a natural question. I find Evangelicals particularly lacking in intellectual depth and the Catholic Church is always suspect in the areas of religious truth and open dialogue. When human beings stop opening their minds they become tediously self-righteous.

WHen I read the book, I knew it was fiction. It is a great story none the less. When I read A Million Little Pieces, I realize it too is a great story. That's why we read, that's why we go to movies. Putting ourselves into a different time and place for the excitement and experience...how would we live without it? You don't have to believe everything you hear and read!

There is no such thing as creation; this stuff about us has always been here. The existance of God is extremely unlikely. Religion is to be avoided. It is so unhealthy. Look what it's doing to people around the world, especially the Muslims . . . chopping peoples heads off and burning down buildings. Sad times for religions.

I wasn't alive first when a giant monkey wrecked New York City but I haven't taken it as THE WAY,THE TRUTH and THE LIGHT. My faith does allow me to question if Kong jumped to save "his wife" or fell due to bullet holes.
Why is Code any different?

It's a big deal when a few Christians make a few comments about a movie they find offensive, but Muslims can torch a Dutch Embassy and parade through the streets shouting out death to the West, all over a stupid little cartoon, and no one seems to think it's unusual. BIG double standard.

PBS (BBC) did a wonderful expose' of the book and it's claims. They are fraud. A French writer (no friend of the Vatican) investigated the supporting documents and proved them forgeries long before the book was published. No matter, the public believe what they want to believe. The Germans had a wonderful word for this "Zeitgeist" Absolutely no validity but a large number of people want to believe. Why?

People who do not believe in God the father, God the son and the Holy Ghost would do all they can to inform the weak, confused and perhaps the partially informed people that Jesus is not what the Holy Bible said he is. I personally believe in Jesus christ and only Jesus Christ as my personal savior and the savior of the world. I suggest to all who believe in the Da Vinci theory to pick up the Holy Bile and read it. Confused and Ill-informed people should find a church that teach and preach from the Holy Bible. The Bible is not a theory, it is the truth. Most men can't handle the truth.

RE: Christ being married.
Of course, God tells us in Revelation 9:6-7 that ALL the true believers like Mary Magdalene are indeed the bride of Christ.
What a wonderful marriage of the elect to the sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords, Our Jesus Christ, our precious Creator and Savior! It is simply marvelous!

Nobody ever said this was fact. It is a novel and a mixture of fact and fiction. However, what would be so terrible if we did find that Jesus and Mary Magdalene married and had a child. Who could think that it diminished his life or death? Why do people have such small minds? And for those of you who think a holy person wouldn't marry, you'd do well to do a little research. How ignorant!

I haven't read the book (would like to), probably will see the movie on DVD & have been a faithful, active Lutheran my entire life. I appreciate the fictional aspects of the Bible (I am most certainly not a Fundamentalist) as well as books related to Biblical stories. I also appreciate the debate that often comes about regarding some stories. I saw "The Last Temptation of Christ" and had to cross an angry picket line to do so. I enjoyed the movie but it did not change my faith. I was also clunked by a sign-wielding nun on the way INTO the theater - turns out she never saw the movie. I'm more concerned about the religious Right that wants everyone to believe that the Bible is black & white. And the conservative Right that keeps dictating what we watch & read is more dangerous than any theories that "The DaVinci" code spells out, in my opinion.
