Paris Hilton makes Redford crazy!
Filed under: Sundance, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
It's come to this, then: Sundance founder Robert
Redford is so put off by what his creation has become that he can hardly stand to attend the damn thing. Though he
did show up for the festival's opening night, Redford apparently
took off shortly thereafter, possibly in an effort to avoid the plague of "starlets." Talking to the AP
yesterday, the actor could barely contain his disgust, telling reporters that Sundance is now seen as "a big fat
market where you have people like Paris
Hilton going to parties." Paris? Really?
Why, whatever was she doing there (apart, that is, from posing and trying to score free stuff)? Redford sure as hell
doesn't know. "She doesn't have anything to do with anything. I think the festival is close to being out of
control."How great is it that the presence of Paris Hilton was the final straw for Redford? It's fun to imagine him walking down the street peacefully, only to see her and run screaming in the other direction. The next day, he was on a flight out of town.

I've wishing for the Sundance Film Festival to self-destroy and disappear. Not because of the films, but because it has and is destroying Park City. They've driven up the prices of everything, you can't get a decent room while the "show" is in town, they have Porn startlets hawking their videos on the street (in Utah!) and on and on. If Redford's "Sundance" resort is elsewhere and Salt lake City has more theaters, why do they have to hold their crappy festival in Park City?
If my winter vacation period coincides with the festival I end up spending my time at Alta/Snowbird.

They hold it in Park City because Redford has a ski resort there. The whole thing's designed partly to get people to his resort. There's something wrong with it. I forget what. Something about the snow melting faster because of where the resort is.
Porn stars hawking videos on the street. I'm remiss as to why the town doesn't just pass an ordinance getting the trash off the street.

I attended the festival this year & didn't see any of the porn referred to in earlier comments. Seeing pre-release films and hearing about the creative efforts by writers, directors, and cast made for a very enjoyable vacation. Perhaps those that would prefer to avoid the crowds shouldn't plan their ski vacation during this one and a half weeks of the entire winter season.
As far as the story goes, I'm surprised to hear that Redford left on opening night because he attended the "Where is the Media" panel discussion on Monday, January 23rd...2nd row, if I remember correctly.

FYI- Sundance Resort, owned by Robert Redford is NOT in Park City. It actually a good distance away from Park City. To think that the reason Redford holds it in Park City is to "get people to his resort" is an unfair and extremely uneducated comment. Redfords idea of promoting the independent film industry should be commended. Shame that it's popularity has overshadowed it's purpose.

I agree, I do not care for Paris, Lohan and much of the other New whatever they are. Most of them have no talent, and if Paris did not have money she would be a no one. She does not even look attractive at all.

What exactly DOES Paris Hilton do? She is a spoiled brat that wouldn't know hard work if it bit her on her spoiled little ass. I am certain that she has no business attending the Sundance Film Festival. Why she shows up anywhere is beyond me. Maybe she should just stay home and count her heiress gold.

I could take or leave the Sundance Festival - but in its defense, Paris Hilton is just a ridiculous person and her presence removes class and sophistication from any event. Is she aware that she's a cocktail party joke?

Yes-lets just say the other thing that has been on our minds for the last 2 years. What is so great about Paris Hilton? She does not need to be at Sundance because she will never be fortunate enough to step foot on an indie film. She can't act and lets just face it, she can't model either. She is a nusense to society and the LAST place she should be is at an independent film festival.

Robert is right! The goal of this unique festival is an opportunity for independent artists to feature their work in a highly respected venue. Let the hangers-on stay in Hollywood.

If I lived out my entire life without EVER hearing about Paris Hilton again I would be fine. Not a big fan of a dog who has the same stupid look on her face in every picture ever taken. There is nothing more boring than having to constantly hear about the day-to-day activities of a vapid, bored hotel heiress who will never contribute anything to society worth mentioning.

It's a shame it has come to this and the founder of a wonderful concept feels the way he does. The concept can still be reined in as originally planned. Mr. Redford should think about revamping the management and event planning of this great event. The concept behind the founding of Sundance is still a terrific idea. It just needs more control as to how to set up the festival and make it be invitation only to Hollywood types. Some brainstorming and controls need to be put into place. It would be a tremendous loss to the industry to let this go down the path it is on currently.

I agree with Robert Redford, I think Paris Hilton gets so much press its totally sickening. What exactly does she do, she has no talent she has no regard for anyone except herself and she is really such an immoral person, not exactly the example you want your daughters to follow. I wonder how many people would love to see porn movies of their daughter on the internet. So my question is why does the media think that people really want to hear about her or are so shallow that they need to know. I bet if you did not cover Ms. Hilton for a month no one would notice. Better yet, I would bet that if you did not cover Ms. Hilton for a year everyone would say "Paris Who". Come on is there so little going on in the world that the only excitement there is is Paris Hilton. Give me a break, my challenge to the media is to find news that is interesting and intelligent. Stop giving this attention seeking brat all the coverage and make her disappear from the limelight. Let her crawl back to her castle. The world will thank you.

To clear up the above passages from someone who is actually from Utah, here is the real deal.
Who cares if the prices go up in Park City? It is only expensive because for its' proximity to ski resorts. In the housing market, prices are high because of the social prestige that is associated with the location.
Robert Redford does not hold the festival because of his ski resort. The resort, Sundance, is located nearly 35 minutes from Park City. The resort does not have any accomadations comparable in luxury and size as Park City does.
Why can't the US have their own slice of indie film festivals? Would you complain about seeing Phantom of the Opera on Broadway because it's not the stage in Paris?
Redford has to realize that the festival's transformation is only a reflection of the popularity that is long overdue; accepting the consequences such as unwanted attention is all part of the business.

If I were Paris' parent, I would be so ashamed. If they had any respect for themselves, they would not give her a dime and send her away. I know if my child was half as disgusting as Paris is (even not in the public eye) I would not want her associated with my family's name.

When I first heard of Paris attending Sundance, my first thought was why???? Every time there is a letter opening in which celebrities are given free stuff(I will not get started with my problem on that sentence), she is right there. Isn't the Hilton family suppose to be worth, like a kazillion dollars, why does she always show up when stuff is free? As for the festival itself, I have always enjoyed hearing about movies made by the indie film makers, and this is the only one that I know of that gets as much publicity as does. Maybe, because of Redford?? But couldn't the handlers or promoters of Sundance block the attendance of people who really does not have anything to do with the festival??

I am so tired of hearing about Paris Hilton. Just what does she contribute to anything. She's out spending Daddy's money and has done NOTHING to deserve the press she gets.

I wish I knew more about the Festival, I have never been fortunate enough to be able to afford to do anything like attending a film festival. I do think the publicity it is affording Mr. Redford and Ms. Hilton is unfortunate. I'm sure Mr. Redford didn't mean to be critical of Ms. Hiltons existance and things were probobly taken out of context. I think Paris Hilton is a beautiful young girl and is easily super model quality as far as her looks go. I believe she does work in T.V. movies, modeling etc... I am sure her life isn't hard by any means, but why be rude just because she has it all and we don't. Lets be honest. As far as Mr. Redford goes, who can even look at the above picture and not be in love with his looks and charisma. It would be nice it the festival he created could be more like he invisioned it to be. Maybe start from sctatch annonymously? Bless you both.

I couldn't agree more that Paris Hilton is a completely useless individual. However, I think this blurb is based on a lot of speculation and possibly taking Redford's words out of context. Celebrity reporters need to be taken with a grain of salt. Redford could have left for a variety of reasons. According to some, he didn't leave that day at all. I doubt that Paris Hilton really dictates when Robert Redford comes and goes. Last I checked, Redford graduated from middle school a long time ago. Something to consider; my understanding of the Sundance Film Festival is that it was designed to help indie film makers get recongized and celebrate the art of independent film. I don't think Redford created it so he could have a snobby, exclusive club that worries themselves about "posers" getting in and "selling out". As much as I consider Paris Hilton a parasite on society, she is currently the quintessential pop icon. The fact that she showed up, is an indicator that independent film is being recognized on a main-stream level. So long as this doesn't affect the quality of the films being screened, I can only see this as a positive. The main-stream is starting to crave quality and originality. Thank you Mr. Redford, you've done your job well. As an actress who could not afford to travel to Sundance, I am a little jealous that socialites can plunk down the bucks to get there, but it certainly doesn't threaten how I see myself as an actress or the indie film community.
