Film Blog Group Hug: Salon, lounge, and lunch
Filed under: Gay & Lesbian, Film Blog Group Hug
- Over at The House Next Door, Matt Zoller Seitz invites everyone to participate in a Robert Altman blog-a-thon on March 3 in anticipation of the director's honorary Oscar.
- Speaking of Oscars, Anne Thompson at Risky Biz Blog (aka the Hollywood Reporter blog) shares belated but fun details about the Oscar nominees' lunch she attended recently.
- Also on Seitz's site, guest blogger Jeremiah Kipp interviews film critic Charles Taylor about his experiences at Salon and why Taylor thinks he was fired from that publication. I was less interested in the firing story and more intrigued by Taylor's opinions about the purposes of film criticism.
- Cinema Strikes Back now has its own forum, The Movie
Lounge, where film geeks are discussing The Hills Have
Eyes, Shaw Brothers movies on DVD, and the ever-popular Daniel Craig.
- Susie Bright doesn't
write often about mainstream film; her blog focuses on sexual issues. However, she found video on the Web of the lesbian
sex scenes in Bound, on which she worked as technical advisor,
and dishes about her
involvement with the Wachowski brothers' film. (Susie's site is NSFW, by the way.)

At my blog, linked to my name, I am informally asking all bloggers to list movies they would love to see on DVD that are not available in any format at this time. The goal is to make companies more aware of the demand for classic and foreign titles. I also take a look at the film career of Oscar host Jon Stewart.

I love to write about film, but I'm glad to have found your attention on this occastion, and to have discovered your blog.
I have what may be a naive question to ask... what is this hullabaloo about an anti-Craig faction among Bond fans? Matt Drudge of all people has been flogging this all week, and it appears in every small town newspaper. Is this a "Casino Royale" reverse psychology publicity stunt?
The aggrieved faction doesn't say what they don't like about Craig, other than some vague reference to his undesireable looks. But who could have seen "Layer Cake" and not been whipped into a lather? I was ready to cast him as Bond or in Brokeback Mountain IMMEDIATELY.
So, is the much-hyped protest a fraud or what? Or, is it some rightwing group that's in a snit b/c Craig is left wing and a pacifist? Inquiring sex critics want to know...

Cinematical posted a story on the anti-Craig faction earlier this week (I can't posts links in comments, so you'd have to search). I don't get all the fuss, either -- the complaints appear to be a) Pierce Brosnan was ousted; and b) Daniel Craig looks like Bill Murray. Which he totally does not.

The interview with Charles Taylor, combined with the NY Post story yesterday about studios avoiding press screenings, has made me fear for the future of film criticism. Maybe it is time for me to take the postal exam...

Hi Susie,
We have a "James Bond" category under "Boldfaced Names" - this anti-Craig thing is the first post there. If you look at the comments, you'll see one from someone calling themselves "Kitn". I don't know for sure if he/she's behind the petition, but he/she's called us out multiple times for what she seems to think is some kind of agenda we have against Pierce Brosnan. Which probably, in part, stems from the fact that I really, really hated The Matador. But, alas.
