Reese is richer than you
According to a report in the Sydney Morning
Herald, the adorable has overtaken the grin: Reese
Witherspoon is expect to make an astonishing $30 million to star in the upcoming Our Family Trouble
("about a mother fighting demons possessing her child"), thus surpassing the previous record of $25 million
earned by Julia
Roberts for her appearance in Mona Lisa Smile. Holy
freaking crap. What's that for, like four months of work? That should keep Ryan and the kids in Wonder Bread for a while. At least based on the most recent numbers I can find (from late 2004), that paycheck puts Witherspoon solidly in the race for highest paid person in Hollywood, period. in 2004, Tom Cruise was making about $25 million/picture, and not one of his contemporaries was earning more. So, amidst all the (often quite valid) complaints about sexism in the movie industry, it's interesting to see that, when it comes to the faces and talents that show up on screen, women earn just as much as men.

Woot. Good for Reese (and women in film).
Now if only we could achieve some equality behind the camera. As the Guerrilla Girls point out:

Whoops. As the Guerrilla Girls point out, women only directed 7% of the top 200 films of 2005 and no woman has ever won the best directing Oscar (only 3 have ever been nominated).
Still, seeing stories like this give me hope that change is on the way.

Okay, I give up. My first comment ever and it takes three tries to get it right. *sigh* I guess I'll go back to just reading Cinematical.

And now begins the post-Oscar curse of starring in awful movies.

This is getting out of control. The industry is complaining about a slumping box office, lower ticket sales and piracy, but they're paying actors $25 million (and now more)?
It's encouraging when low-budget films, like Saw, made without huge stars can make huge bank. Hollywood needs to take a step back and realize what they're doing.
They could make 30 Saw's for what they paid Reese to be in this movie. Not that Saw is cinematic gold or anything, but it's a lot more fresh and entertaining than the movie remakes and TV adaptions we've been subject to lately.

This is out of control. I don't go to the movies because it's silly to pay these prices. I love Reese Witherspoon. What makes any actor worth 30 million dollars or even some high price athlete. I think everyone should be able to make a good living. But they aren't saving lives. How many truly have a positive influence on young children and teens. I'm glad women are in the race with men somewhere but I wish it could be somewhere more important.
