Oscars: Best Picture
Filed under: Drama, Awards, Distribution, Oscar Watch

Jack Nicholson is officially the coolest guy ever. The man strolled out onto stage and goes, "It all comes down to this." And folks, it really does all come down to this. We've come a long way, written tons of posts and I, personally, have been blogging for 5 hours now. Yeah, I'm spent. And the nominees for best picture are:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Munich
HOLY CRAP! Can I say that again? HOLY CRAP! Crash has just won best Picture. After everyone and their mother's mother predicted Brokeback Mountain would win, it appears they were all wrong. This year, the audience favorite wins out. Wow. I totally did not see that coming. With a night full of "yeah, that figures" type comments, in the end the Academy totally throws us for a loop. Congrats to Magnolia's little brother for taking home the award - I'm sure all of you out there have plenty to say on this one, so feel free.
Note: Does this mean the Brokeback jokes are done?

Well, I agree with you about this being a shocking upset.
But you're wrong about the predictions. Roger Ebert is a prophet.

Probably shouldn't speak from a state of shock, but I will. This is America. BBM just wasn't ALLOWED to win.

Hollywood covered their ass on two fronts tonight. Please don't stop going to the movies and please don't stop watching the oscars - we are in touch with the average idiot who could not stomach Brokeback Mountain and so the academy's gift to you is Crash. I want my 3 and 1/2 hours back.

I think the Academy was bombarded with two many good choices and didn't know where to go. Wow. This was a weird year. I was almost sure Brokeback Mountain was going to take the oscar. Or if not Brokeback than Good Night, and Good Luck. I did like CRASH. But I was suprised even to see it nominated for best picture. Hmmm. Interesting politics.

The Academy couldn't win this one. If BBM had won, it would have won because of its homosexual content. And it lost, as you can see in the above comments, because of its homosexual content.

Brokeback Mountain was robbed. I think it was definitely political. Racism is obviously more fashionable to object to than homophobia. It just shows how conservative our country is.

Every year we're cursed with the same exhausted mantra from critical cacophonous:"films released in the early part of the year are never remember by Academy voters in the following spring." Well 'Crash' proved that statment's fallacy -- I was, or misheard, confused by the producer's statement that people voted for 'Crash' because of it's 'inspiring' message. It inpspired me to getout and stay out of LA.

A good measure of the BLAME for getting the Crash bandwagon rolling goes to Roger Ebert. Objectively, Brokeback was the most impressive movie I've seen in several years, not only this year. The way I feel now, I will never read another one of his reviews with any confidence or trust. God, I miss Gene Siskel!

Brokeback was a horrid, stupid movie that nobody I know went to see. Let's see: deviant sex, the fiction that guys in Wyoming like homosex, and finally that running out on your wife and kids is somehow "romantic." It'a loser story from loser people made for losers. Yuck yuck yuck. If this movie had won it would have simply confirmed the suspicion that Hollywood is more interested in jamming crap down our throats than making a movie real America wants to see. Maybe they wised up?

I personally feel Crash was a much better movie that Brokeback Mountain. BBM only received the acclaim it did because it was about a controversial subject: homosexual love. While I feel homosexuals should have their rights taken from them, that is no reason to consider an average movie great.

#10 ...objectively??? What the hell so objective about your OPINION of a movie? Ebert is a movie critic by profession. I tend to trust his opinions far more than some drive-by critic who is disappointed because lovy-dovy movie did not win best picture.

America - the land of the brave and home of the free where every man is created equal unless they are black, jewish, muslim, gay, woman.....Brokeback losing is just another example of the religious rights hold on that poor little rich country.

Straights in the academy would never let a "fag" movie win...race relations are soooooo much more important than gay bashing and the murder of gay men....fuck the academy awards. Steven Speilberg and eat out Tom Cruises ass.
