Hanks' fury at Gump
Filed under: Drama, Awards, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Oscar Watch
As Michael mentioned in the comments section of
Kim's Oscar Round-up post, the reason behind
the stunning, live TV revelation that Tom
Hanks is not a saint (He swears? He gets mad?! But ... but ... he's Tom Hanks!) has supposedly been revealed: it
turns out that he hates Forrest Gump as much as we do.According to Defamer, Hanks had been promised that he was going to be played onto the stage with a lovely tune that was very much NOT the Forrest Gump theme. When the time came for his big entrance, however, the music was all Gump, all the time. (At least, that's what it says in the article -- since I wouldn't know the theme to Forrest Gump if it came up and punched me in the face, I'm going to have to take Defamer's word on this one.) Hanks is of the opinion that he's "moved beyond" that movie (yeah, you keep telling yourself that, Forrest),so he was really, really, pissed, and chose to express himself by swearing in front of millions of people.
So, there you go -- a possible explanation, at least. Whether it's true, of course, is something else entirely.

Rather shallow commentary that such a versatile actor as Tom Hanks has been labeled and saddled with the dogma of a Forrest Gump being his triumphant accomplishment!!

Well said, Scott. Forrest Gump is one of my favorite ten movies. I watch it at least once a month. I can quote it line by line. And *I* do not think of Gump when I think of Hanks. I think he has played too many powerful roles before and after to worry about being labeled in that fashion. I think that most of the movie watchers on the planet prolly thinks that Hanks has moved past Forrest Gump with his movies that came after. Saving Private Ryan? Cast Away? Road to Perdition? Toy Story? Hello!?
I can understand why the guy would be pissed. I mean, they lied to him, right? If the show producer lied to me and I was the shizzit like Hanks, I might screw with his telecast a little by cussing. Everyone there knows there is a delay. Why not give him some grief.

"...it turns out that he hates Forrest Gump as much as we do"? I don't think so. NO ONE hates "Forrest Gump" as much as I do.

I think it's really sad when an actor behaves like Tom Hanks. He won an Oscar for that role and he hates the character he played? That's pathetic and very egotistical. I once met Patty Duke back in the mid-70s. She seemed pleasant enough until I mentioned to her how I grew up watching the "Patty Duke Show" on TV and she "flipped her wig." In her estimation, she had gone on to bigger things. Really--these famous people should be grateful for the fame they've achieved and be more gracious to their fans. Okay, now I hate Tom Hanks and Patty Duke.

I thought the "Gump" role fit Hanks perfectly; he more or less played himself, how can he outrun that?

I saw his entrance onto the stage during the academy awards ceremony, and he DID look angry and it seemed like he was saying something heatedly, but I didn't know what it was about; although after reading the article, NOW I do. It's a lovely song. I don't see what the big deal is about them playing it. I like Tom Hanks, but I'd never see him show his butt before. It seems like a silly thing for someone to react so poorly over. It's just a song.

Well, mes enfants, Tom Hanks is like a box of chocolates. You never know how dumb a 'star'is going to get. If he were as good as Forrest Gump, he'd be a lucky, and better, man.

Actors of Tom Hanks caliber work very hard to not be stuck into one role for life. To have that happen is death to an actor. A real actor has to be able to move beyond one role. I personally refused to see Forrest Gump because that's all anyone could talk about during it's heyday and I was glad that Tom Hanks has the versatility to play so many different parts each equally well. I remember him from Bosom Buddies.
When I finally was goaded into seeing the "great" Forrest Gump movie, I thought it was just plain stupid and couldn't see what all the hupola had been about. Bravo for Hanks for showing his best in the movies since and even before.

Tom Hanks should be grateful for "forrest gump". It was a nice launching pad for all the things that came for him afterwards and not to mention it provided him with an academy award. If they chose to play the music based on a role that won an oscar...Hanks should just go with it. Be proud of ALL the work you have done not just the recent stuff. Is he proud of "big". Gump was a gem compared to that and I liked "big" as well. How about wearing a skirt on national tv? Hey...everyone has to start somewhere to get anywhere. He should enjoy those moments in his life that made people laugh and actually GO TO THE MOVIES.

At least Hanks and his wife Rita weren't gushing and slobbering all over each other as on past Oscar nights. Gag me with a spoon!

I think Hanks just haves such a big head and thinks too much about his importance. That burbs movie he did was really aweful. I think he is just like Arnold Schwaertzerwhatever, just a big head.

As with all these over paid actors they behave like infants. They make political stands on everything, they condem us little people of being narrow minded. They believe that they have changed the country for the better. At one time I had a great respect for Tom Hanks and many other actors. They (Hollywood) have sent our country into moral decay. When is the last time you went to a movie (not a children's movie) and were truly entertained without hearing every four letter word possible and without seeing every part of the human anatomy. To hell with Hanks and all his Hollywood friends.

I would think Tom Hanks would be more embarrassed by the imbecilic and raunchy 'Bachelor Party' movie he did, or perhaps the stultifying lame Middle East romance he did in the '80s. It's not like he's stuck in an iron-cast role like Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro Bodine), the late great Don Knotts (Barney Fife), or the sodomized character in 1972's 'Deliverance' (unfortunately personified by the great actor Ned Beatty).

Geez...isn't EVERYONE entitled to their feelings?! And we all at any given moment can react in ways that seem strange or dumb to the onlookers who may not know
exactly what triggered our behavior. I, for one, do not make judgements on hearsay for the very reason that I have been grossly misunderstood (as I'm sure we all have) at times in my life by people who knew nothing of what I was going thru. Sometimes, it isn't
the MOMENT we crack that made us crack but just the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.

Does anyone REALLY care? Forrest Gump was a good movie to me, others disagree. SO WHAT? I think Tom Hanks is a great actor but a typical Hollywood freak. Others will disagree on both points. Again, SO WHAT? Until people stop hanging on everything the Hollywood crowd does, Hollywood will keep turning out freaks.

I'd like to point out to you Danny that Hanks had already won an Oscar for his role in Philadelphia, a movie I found to be far more interesting than Gump and there was also his steller performance in The Green Mile, based on the books by Stephen King. He nailed that character perfectly. Everyone has to start somewhere and I think Hanks has done some truly wonderful movies and if he was lied to he has a right to be pissed. No actor wants to be typecast and I think Hanks has done a fine job in doing a variety of different characters. I look forward to seeing how he does in The Da Vinci Code which comes out this summer.
