Dallas Casting Details

The reports last
week that zillions of cities not in Texas were pursuing the production of the Dallas movie was a sure sign that the
thing is actually going to be made sometime in the near future - but who really care where it is? The masses want to
know who's going to be in it, dammit, and we want to know now! And today, because 20th Century Fox really cares about
the little people, they've thrown us some surprisingly encouraging casting bones.First of all, the big one: JR Ewing is not going to be played by either Kevin Costner or Mel Gibson, both of whom reportedly were interested in the role. Instead, it'll be everyone's second-favorite Scientologist, John Travolta, throwing on the hat and the grin. Despite the fact that I'm very much not a Travolta fan, I think this is a great idea - the man can bring the sleazy charm. Poor Sue Ellen? Oh, that's Miss Jennifer Lopez. Again, awesome. Though JLo has let me down time and time (and time) again since Out of Sight, it really seems like she's perfect for this role - I mean, just picture her for a second, drink in hand, looking pissed. See? Wrapping up the Ewing family will be Shirley MacLaine as Miss Ellie, and Wilson #1 (that's Luke to you) as Bobby.
Now, no deals have yet been signed - in fact, only Wilson even has an offer - but according to Variety, all four are expected to accept the roles. And, since the production is being scheduled around Travola's availability (Dallas will start as soon as he gets out of his dress over on the set of Hairspray), his involvement at least seems to be a foregone conclusion.
So, Dallas fans: what do you think? Am I out of my damn mind, being impressed by these names? Who's your dream Bobby Ewing?

John Travolta is PERFECT for the role of J.R. I could not imagine anyone else for that role! I can see Luke Wilson as Bobby, but J Lo as Sue Ellen? Come on. Doesn't fit. How about Catherine Zeta Jones or even Angelina Jolie? Reese Witherspoon would be a good fit for Pamela; Jennifer Aniston as Jenna Wade. I'm not sure I like Shirley MacLaine as Miss Ellie . . . should be interesting!

I do not think John Travolta would be a good JR Ewing....a good Bobby, perhaps, but not JR......
I'm thinking that I heard along the lines somewhere that Bruce Willis was being considered for the role of JR - I actually think this would be a good casting.
The question is: who's gonna play the role of Cliff Barnes and Jock Ewing (if he's in the movie)? I think a Sam Elliot would be an IDEAL casting for Jock Ewing...

I agree that Matthew McConaughey would be a gr8 Bobby! I mean, Bobby was good looking and the ladies loved him, what better person! I also think a better person than Shirley McClain should play the sweet, petite Miss Ellie.

As an old fan of Dallas...I really don't care who plays what...but will go to the movie!!! I still miss my Friday's with Bobby...and JR was the only person in the world I wished would get his just reward. To have Dallas back, even for 2 hours, will be a walk down memory lane for this Dallas Fan...

Rodney has a good point - Sam Elliott would make an excellent Jock Ewing! Why not Matthew McConaughey as Ray Krebs? Hilary Duff as Lucy? Another interesting possibility as J.R.: Chris Noth! Mr. Big as J.R., what a riot! Ben Affleck as Cliff Barnes . . . It will be hard to replace the original cast, but I can't wait!!

Call me crazy but I'm not interested in seeing any young, current stars in these roles. I would love to see the original cast picking up where it left off. Face it, no one can play these characters better than the originals. I enjoy watching the reruns but I won't even go see a film that has anyone but the originals in it.

Let me just say speaking as a Texan and being from Dallas too, why must they touch this TV classic? Why? Sure the cast has some good names and it is great that they are getting Dallas born Luke Wilson. I think they should leave will enough alone and stop touching all the older TV shows. That is what I have to say on the matter.
