Sharon Stone Gets in Touch With Those Kinky Instincts

Sharon Stone says after she saw a rough cut of
Basic Instinct 2 she pushed
for more of the wild sex scenes that had been cut to be put back in the film. "I wanted a lot of sex in the
sequel, and I wanted more nudity," Stone said in an
interview with The Telegraph. "I was coming from a really kinky place." I suppose if the sex and nudity
are there because they make sense from a standpoint of story arc and character development it makes perfect ... oh,
come on, who are we kidding?
Basic Instinct made Stone famous more because she flashed her hoo-hoo at the camera than because of her acting. Her post-Basic Instinct film career has been decidedly uneven. She got the Oscar nod a decade ago for her role in Casino. Since then, we have Diabolique (yawn), The Mighty (a decent enough film that bombed at the box office), The Muse (meh), and a bunch of crapedelic filler (voice acting the "blind art teacher" on Higglytown Heroes? Did she have a high credit card bill to pay off or something?)
Then she turned in a good performance in Broken Flowers with Bill Murray, and suddenly she's hot property again. She had before her the opportunity to take one of two paths. Down the first path was the possibility of heading into her late-40s career renaissance with grace and aplomb, showing the world her innate acting talents, putting her leg-crossing-hoo-hoo-baring days behind her. Down that path lay, perhaps, some plum film roles for an attractive, older actress. She could have gone head-to-head with Meryl Streep, Sissy Spacek, Rene Russo and Glenn Close; why, in another 15 years or so, she could have perhaps been another Dame Judi Dench, perennially Oscar-nominated for playing brass-balled, tough-yet-classy older women (we'll forgive Dench the temporary insanity that caused her to think playing opposite Vin Diesel in The Chronicles of Riddick was a good plan).
Down the second path, glittering with cheap Las Vegas neon promising a second chance to be the flavor of the month, was the opportunity to capitalize on sex, nudity and the base shock value of "Holy geez - she's naked and engaging in sexual acts - and she's past 40!" The opportunity to titillate, rather than to engage in serious dramatic acting; unfortunately, no one apparently told Stone that sex and nudity only carry your career so far, especially once you hit that age where people tell you with condescending kindness you're "aging gracefully" -- the getting older equivalent of "she has a great personality".
The problem with this path is two-fold: audiences will come out to see a naked 47-year-old hoo-hoo baring actress once, but the film itself damn sure better deliver more than a naked Stone for 90 minutes; and once she's played out that hand, what's next? How many roles are there in Hollywood for older women to be naked nymphos in films? I'd wager not a whole lot. If she doesn't turn in some serious acting, she may find herself with rapidly diminishing returns on her investment in kink. Interesting side note: an IMDB search for Sharon Stone turns up this Sharon Stone first, but the next choice on the list, Sharon Stone (III) has one and only one film to her credit - it's called Too Much Flesh. The first Sharon Stone might want to pay heed.
Stone has some decent acting chops when she lets go with it - she doesn't need to resort to the shock value of nudity to make a comeback. I'd have much rather seen her stick with more serious, dramatic roles, than resort to this kind of sadly ridiculous "look at me, no clothes!" behavior. She has four films lined up on her post-Basic Instinct 2 plate. Here's hoping for less sex and more acting in those.

Stone should give up because no amount of nudity or otherwise will save this crap film.

She can act when she wants to, but she seems more interested in just getting lots of attention. Stone seems pretty good at self promotion, and getting naked at 48 has stirred up attention. I doubt she cares how the film does, as didnt she fight the producers in court to stop it? Anyway, she does look pretty great, even if she is a little insane...

Sharon Stone's cameo in Broken Flowers was OK. But in the U.K., where he has equal top billing on the poster, some of us will be more interested in whether David Morrissey's artistic integrity survives after this film. But, however good or bad, it will do fine at the box office, at least in the first week.

Might have guessed the AOL critical review on Sharon Stone's new film would be written by a ..... you guessed it, a female! A Kim Voynar?
Whenever female reviewers get overly critical of nudity in a film, usually it stems from jealousy and/or envy. Give it up "Fema-nazis"... if you can't handle the heat .....?

Typical MALE response Mr. Mike Davis.
Let's see you critique a movie with a leading Hollywood heart-throb that shows his "hoo-hoo" thru 80% of the movie with out letting your jelousy or envy come out....but then again, the possiblity of a movie like that actually being made is zero to nil! I for one am tired of actresses using sex and nudity to boost their careers instead of true talent. You don't see a lot of male actors out there who are known for giving full nudity shots and steamy sex scenes...where's the fairness in that??

Sharon Stone is a bore to watch. Sort of like Melanie Griffith. It's painful to watch her. My best comparison is she's going to end up her career being laughed at, like Zsa Zsa Gabor. Only she'll look like Carol Burnett's "Norma Desmond" characher. It's sad to see someone her age trying to act like she's 24. Do you honestly think the average movie goer wants to go see "grandma" naked? I saw Calendar Girls. It isn't pretty.

ME-OW, kitty! Why so nasty towards Sharon? As a fellow journalist, I'll never understand why so many of my brother and sister scribes who cover the entertainment beat go after people with such venom.
Did Sharon diss you during an interview? Did she cut you off in traffic? Did she sleep with your husband/boyfriend/lover? Why not just stick to the facts about Sharon Stone and her career, and leave the editorializing to the reader? I, for one, think she's a helluva good actress. Has she done some stinker movies? Hell, yes, but then again, so did Marlon Brando, and just about every other talented actor/writer/direcor in history.
It's interesting that when a performer has the nerve to be
1) intelligent--apparently Sharon is a member of MESNA and has an IQ hovering in the 160s
2) beautiful
3) successful, both professionally and financially, so many of us journalists who are given a public forum vomit our own anger and personal issues upon them.
Kim, you're obviously a very good writer, and a very angry woman. Why not focus all that negative energy you're obviously harboring into something positive--like therapy! Maybe if you were happier with yourself, you'd find some positive attributes in the people you write about.

I couldn't agree more! What a desparate attempt for attention and a bad choice for a career move. She was great in Casino and I too cannot stand her. She is such a phony in front of the cameras. I'm surprised she has not been outed yet by the Gay community yet. She's been dating her female assistant for years!

Naked or not, who really cares? I have to admit I find the fact that she's pushing for more naked wild sex scenes pathetic and bizarre especially at her age. What matters is the fact that she was never more than a mediocre actress to begin with and not all that attractive even in her prime. Admit it, everyone remembers that movie for the flashing shot and not the B Flick actress.

Hmmm....what's wrong with Sharon Stone's Hoo-Hoo? She can show it to me anytime. And what the hell's wrong with being 47? Has Kim found some fountain of youth that she will never age? Are we to believe that only younger women should have roles in films? Albeit, Sharon has played some roles that are forgetful, at least she is working and not afraid to push the envelope.

The story seems to have been written by an anti-nudity crusader who is jealous of Stone's success. I thought she did a great acting job in the original, and she looked great, too. I'm always skeptical of sequels, so I don't know if it will be good. I think it's courageous of Sharon to do nudity at her age, unlike those other over-40 chickens who cheat by using body doubles to try to fool people.
