Star Wars Boss Rick McCallum Admits Prequels Were Unsatisfying
Filed under: Action, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek
In
a recent discussion with Empire Online, Star
Wars mega-producer Rick McCallum made a
passive admission that the prequel films did not live up to the expectations of...well, a large number of fans. Many
SW fans have been vocally critical of the new trilogy - enjoying it for what it is while lamenting that it was
not what it could have been. McCallum was primarily discussing the plans for the announced Star Wars
live-action television program, which he claims is still at least another 18 months away. The producer says of the one
hour episodic program which will take place between eps three and four "...it's fantastic; we've got some
incredible writers. It's going to be much darker, much more character-based, and I think it's going to be
everything the fans always wanted the prequels to be." (emphasis added)Well, Rick, it's good to know that you are aware of the general disappointment surrounding the new trilogy. While I, perhaps, don't dislike it as much as many fans, I do readily admit that it was not the return I have spent the last twenty years of my life dreaming about. Here's hoping you can somehow recapture the magic for your new program.

Could any movie match 20 years of waiting and endless hype?

I thought when I read that on another site there was some admission.
The Fans had over-blown their expectations, but it wasn't even as good as the originals. If only it had some good dialogue and a flow of action instead of "wouldn't it be cool to have a pod race here" It seemed the action dictated the story.
Back in the 70's I hated Battlestar Galactica the series and loved Star Wars Movies. Now I love the new series and fear I will loathe a star wars tv show.

I think people really expected way too much out of the prequels. Most of the fan-base for the original SW movies were kids and teen-agers who had never before seen anything like it. Now, the SW fan base is 30 and 40 somethings who have seen every big budget special-effect and then some...and who put the original movies on a (well-deserved) pedastal which is impossible to live up to. As a die-hard Lucas-maniac, I loved every minute of the prequels, and look forward to the TV series with bated breath. Everyone who continually bashes the new movies continues to amaze me, because if you really felt they were THAT bad, why do you keep going to chat groups and websites for them? I would never visit a website for a movie I hate as much as some of you say you hate the new Star Wars. Give it a rest people, these are movies to be enjoyed for what they are, pure escapist entertainment. I, for one, thank Mr. Lucas for giving us 30 years of pure joy.

Am I the only one that actually liked the prequels? Sure the character development wasn't as goos as IV, V and VI - but they still were entertaining.

Amen hulksmash. Personally I think the character development was fine, I don't see the problems everyone else sees. If one watches the originals with an open mind, you can see some of the same "stilted" dialogue and cheesy lines. It's just that everyone puts the originals on a pedestal and is still seeing them through the eyes of the 10 year old they were, and yet they are watching the new ones with the eyes of a jaded adult. Long live Star Wars...ALL Star Wars.

You were not the only one who liked the prequels. I tink they were great. Sure, I will not say Jar Jar was the best character ever, but I think he was put there for the younger viewers who may not be able to understand the whole story. I may have grimaced through the horrible love scenes as they were, but they were just a small portion of the movies.

I am in the hate camp. I can't imagine how anybody could remotely like the new ones. I loved the originals as they were released and, I admit, that the luster has worn off of them a bit, but they are still vastly superior to the utter schlock of I, II, and III. They are miserable films. I only hope that the TV show takes cues from Battlestar and produces something worthy of attention.
