Film and Dutch Immigration
In order to help potential immigrants pass a strict new
entrance examination, the Dutch government is now putting a DVD called To the Netherlands in the study packets
they give to those interested in moving to the Netherlands. Because the new test requires not only some knowledge of
Dutch, but also an understanding of the country's liberal values, the DVD includes representative images of those
values - and that's where the problem lies. Though they make up only a few minutes of the DVD's two hour running time,
the presence of footage of topless sun bathers and two men kissing has outraged opponents of the new immigration
policy, who believe those images were inserted primarily to shock Muslims, and keep them out of the country.Needless to say, immigration officials deny the charges, and in fact have made an edited version of the film without that footage for citizen of Muslim countries where even looking at images of nude women is prohibited. Opponents counter with the fact that homosexuality is discussed on the edited discs, and believe that alone will be enough to keep some devout Muslims from emigrating.

Because if that happened, it would be a tragedy... in what way again?

So the Dutch imigration authorities should lie to the people in muslim countries. Then when they go to the Netherlands, and experience a free and liberal society for themselves, they can become outraged and decide to change it to the detriment of everybody who was there already in a country that had spent 400 years putting that society together. I suppose that's a better choice, right?

While Alexander's comment is frankly pathetic, this incident does throw up an interesting dilema, although possibly one far outside of the scope this website to discuss or solve! Should the package be restricted to provide a view of the country that fits in with the least liberal perspective? I can see the removal of nudity on the basis that I am sure I could live in the country without encountering nude bathers (just stay away from the beaches!) just as I am sure that I could avoid encounters with drug use or prostitution. Encounters with non-hetrosexual couples might be a little harder to avoid (assuming that was something I wanted to do) and it might be best to inform people that it is an accepted part of the social structure that they intend to live in. I personally don't see it as an anti-muslim statement but I haven't seen or heard the film. Perhaps something along the lines of "If you live here you may encounter people who live lifestyles which run contrary to your religious beliefs. Whilst you are entitled to hold those beliefs you must accept that these people have a right to their beliefs also. You may not impinge on their freedoms, just as they must not yours". That should cover most major religious groups, as well as anyone else with less than liberal viewpoints!

Wellllll, I wouldn't consider an obsession with sex or homosexuality or marijuana a sign of human progress. There's no reason not to encourage an influx of persons from right-wing societies to come to the Netherlands, it would prevent any political bias and lead to a more integrated solution for true human progress. For all we know, nudity and homosexuality are holding the country BACK, forced as they are to borrow lots of money and tax their citizens very socialistically for all the Bureaus, Directorates, and Commissions that are needed to sustain the rights of weak groups like feminists or gays...or Muslims.
But for the sake of the Kyoto Accords, no one should be immigrating to the West at all. You take nature-children, who have never sinned against Mother Earth, and make them wasteful Western consumers. They would buy cars and burn petrol (gasoline) in the Netherlands, consume lots of electricity for their widescreen digital TVs and DVD-players and their Nintendo, and what is worse, they would send consumer goods back home to their real country and they would start to pollute over there too! The globe is warming friends, and we in the West should certainly try to conserve, but you'd be eliminating any benefit of 20 people cutting back by 5% if you introduce a 21st, the immigrant, in your country. Think about it! The true environmentalist is sharply against immigration. Even multiculturalism leads to friction and confusion and extra waste energy is needed to accomodate it, that too is a pollution problem from the thermodynamics of it all. When they produced a "Muslim-safe" version of the film, they wasted more energy than if they produced one uniform product.
