Conan Meets Wachowski Brothers?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
The Conan the Barbarian rumor mill has certainly had its share of drama over the past year or so.
Established geek culture brothers the Wachowskis were at one point
attached to the film as producers/writers for director John Milius
(remember those rumors?), but allegedly got outta dodge due to nebulous creative differences with the big M. However,
Milius may be gone now, and recent stories report that the folks over at Warner Brothers are interested in bringing the
brothers back into the Conan fold - possibly this time as directors. The brothers are avowed comic fans, and
are apparently rather familiar with Robert Howard's comic world. The new flick is still reportedly called King Conan: Crown of Iron, and many fans hope to see King Arnold (governor, whatever) return to his role to complete the trilogy. I'd love to see Arnold as an aging ruler Barbarian...in fact, it's hard to imagine a return to the franchise without the guy. If you've got an idea for an actor out there who could fill the Barbarian shoes, comment away, I'd love to hear.

HELL NO.
Either an unknown, or maybe Mickey Rourke. Give him the hair and watch his performance in Sin City. Give him a battle-axe and he has the weatherbeaten, snarling visage to portray an aging Conan as he was in the Robert E Howard stories, not as he was in any of the previous movies.

If Arnold can get back into semi decent shape it would be good to see him playing Conan during his time as a king. Depends if it’s going to be a watered down PG or PG-13, if that’s the case I would rather they don’t make it at all.

I agree that if they don't do it as an R rated film, then don't bother doing it at all.
I disagree on the Arnold thing. When Conan was king of Aquilonia, his was at probably his most reflective and worldly in REH's writing. IMO, Arnold just doesn't have the acting chops to do it justice. He was fine in the original (I blocked Conan The Destroyer from my memory years ago), even though he didn't really behave at all like the Conan of REH. I can at least separate the two in my head, and they can exist as separate entities.
However, if they do a new one, I would much rather see them hew much more closely to the source material. I'm not that keen on the Wack brothers getting a hand in it either. As far as I'm concerned, The Matrix was frickin' sweet, the two sequels sucked big time. I haven't seen V For Vendetta yet, so the jury's still out on that one.
I think Robert Rodriguez or Peter Jackson would be ideal for a good Conan movie....one can always dream at least...

Am I the only person who likes The Rock around here? Yes, he did The Scorpion King, which was like Diet Conan, but he's the only one who's got muscles and charisma.
I say, either Arnold comes back, or The Rock, or we wait however many years until we get ourselves a new likeable musclebound badass.

I AM IN AGREEANCE WITH COMMENT NUMBER 5. IF NOT AH'NOLD THEN I BELIEVE THE ROCK WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR THE PART.

How about a wrestler other than Rock like HHH. He's already had did some acting in the 3rd Blade movie. He's charismatic, got the long flowing hair and is buff.

Kevin Sorbo would be perfect as Conan, IMO! He was great as Kull and Hercules. (-:

You have all lost your minds! Kevin Sorbo is a joke! Either get Arnold back into shape and have him do it or use The Rock!

Rock is in good shape, but too old. If you're going to do this, restart/remake.
I'm still thinking wrestlers, but not HHH. How about John Cena? He's already proven to have cross-over media appeal. Wait until his "Marine" movie comes out before you pass judgment.

The story of King Conan, is not the story ABOUT King Conan. It the story of his son, Conn. Read about Ulysses, the inspiration - and learn that the waning years are about Telemechus not his father. If this new movie is to complete the saga, then it should be done correctly. Let Conan sail off into the sunset with his former-slave wife and his buddy Juma(never depicted in the movies) leaving his son in charge. That is the movie that even the Matrix Bros. would shy away from - not commercial enough.

There is no way that it would work without Schwarzenegger. As for getting into shape, I dont think that would be too hard for him because he was down to his old body fat rate for Terminator 3, as he was for Terminator 1&2 (11%). Besides if he is an aging ruler, a little bit of pudge should be expected. I dont care how well you take care of yourself, as you get older, you tend to get a little sogier in the midsection. Another thing is if you want to keep true to the era he would have to be a little soft now.

Another possible choice would be Vin Diesel. He has the physical attributes, and in viewing his more recent acting forays, has a multi-dimentional facet to his acting abilities that some of the other action based actors are lacking

I have one name for you Matthew McConnely. Did you see him Reign of Fire. I think he could pull this off very well, he would have to pump up a bit but I think he can do a very good job at being the next Conan, although no one would ever be Arnold.

Action movies aren't just for the guys, so I'm going to add my opinion here. I think Arnold coming back as King is a great idea, but only as the torch passer. Definitely not the Rock, he's unbelievable as Conan. Someone fresh and new would be nice, and the film should have a R-rating if it plans on raking in the bucks.
