Whispers of Ghostrider

If the box office for the first decade of the new millennium can be defined by anything, it is no doubt the
remarkable surge of comic book properties finding their way to the big screen. These films are generally (although not
universally) money makers, and studios have been actively snatching up any title they can get their grubby hands on
recently. Foremost among the fray is no doubt the comic book powerhouse of Marvel, whose properties frequently turned
into box office gold. Marvel has a nice little deal with Paramount these days, but a few titles exist that are bound to
other studios - one of which is the much talked about Ghost
Rider picture starring Nicolas Cage and produced by Sony.
However, Sony is apparently having second thoughts.Sam Elliott, who co-stars with Cage in the Marvel action flick, has stated that Sony's recent box office slump (the company took a major beating last year) has apparently scared them off of the Ghost Rider title for now. "It was supposed to come out this summer," said Elliott, "but it's not." According to Elliott, the film has now been bumped to a President's Day '07 release - and as the LA Daily reminds us February is not typically a hot time for major action flicks. Is Sony trying to quietly bury a project they're now afraid will add to their list of flops? Looks like this may be the case.

I think its too early to tell whether the movie will be a hit or not. Comic books have now become obsolete due to flashy computer and video games, and the new age of technology which has more appeal than sitting down and reading a $2.00 comic book. But even today they continue to be sellers because of people who were touched and immersed in their somewhat humanistic stories and ideals.
The day comic books become less imaginative and ancient history, is the same day comic book movies will dissapear as well.

This movie will suck. They should not have gone cheap with Cage's hairpiece in this film, it looks like the fur of a dead rat was placed on his head...

I don't think that comic books have become obsolete although I do think that their audience has changed. I don't see too many people buying comics just as reading material anymore, instead people are either following them or not. You used to be able to find comic book racks in every supermarket and corner store, now you pretty much have to either subscribe or go to a comic store to find them. I also think the intended audience has gotten older, compare the orginal x-men comics with the relativly new ultimate series, or maybe it's just how much the times have changed. Although I would be hesitant to allow kids to read the ultimate x-men series at the same age that I read the originals.
Either way IMHO the reason Sony's latest productions have been flops has been because they haven't produced anything worth watching. The only ones that I personally was even half interested in seeing were Underworld: Evolution and ultraviolet and I couldn't even make it through ultraviolet before i left the theater it was so bad. Now the one movie they have had in the last while that actually looks good and has a pretty much assured fan base of marvel worshipers no matter how bad it is, they chose to rethink it. Go figure.
