Joss Whedon Wants Lynda Carter
Filed under: Casting, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Having recently announced that he's nearing completion on his Wonder Woman script, geek kingpin Joss Whedon has fans curious to see what he's put together. Naturally,
the primary question on the forefront of everyone's mind is "who will Joss cast for the title role?"
Suggestions have been flying fast and furious, and several actresses (or female actors, whatever they're being called
these days) have emerged as popular favorites, despite Whedon's insistence that he hasn't really thought about it yet.
He does have a "list" in his head, but he's also interested in finding somebody new if possible - because the
character he has written is a "very specific role," and he can't think of anyone off hand to match. However, Joss has admitted that he'd like to include TV's original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter in a cameo role, but only if it is "right for the movie." He loves Carter's work, and is open to the idea of throwing her into the new film, but won't do it just for the sake of some weird nostalgia satisfaction. He has said "It’s just a question of I’m not going to do something that isn’t integral to the film. If I found something that was right, absolutely, but not if it takes you out of the narrative."

Too late Joss! As soon as I see Wonder Woman during the main titles I'm taken out of the "narrative"... Seriously man, can you say career low?

The whole reason you are doing a remake is for the nostalgia factor. You are trying to tap into that market which remembers the previous version or versions and you are trying to be 'hip' and bring in the kids. Well you know, I for one have no time at all for remakes which do not acknowledge the original. If the egos of the director and writer/writers making the new version doesn't have room for the original actors then they can take their remake and shove it direct to video cause I'm not going to see it and lots of other people aren't going to see it. The Starsky and Hutch movie didn't have time or the desire to include David Soul, Paul Michael Glaser or the Huggy Bear guy well then obviously they didn't want me seeing it or renting it and I haven't. Same thing for the Miami Vice movie. If you can't put the original guys in the movie somewhere you don't want my money. If you want your own vision for a movie and characters then freaking create your own and don't try raping my childhood. At least Whedon is acknowledging Lynda Carter and the tv show. That tells me he didn't think he invented the 'franchise' in the first place and that he acknowledges that he is dealing with Wonder Woman as we remember it.

Except this movie isn't a remake. That's like saying you hated Batman Begins because Adam West wasn't in it. Of course, maybe you did.

The original actors for Starsky and Hutch did have brief cameos at the end of the flick. I do think it would be wrong to do Wonder woman and not at least have Lynda make an appearance. Geez. Whats wrong with Joss? For that matter whats wrong with Hollywood. Please let this movie not suck...

Why not? It helps the patina of a movie if you ask me. It is nice to know that JK Rowling is comfortably nestled into a snug, inobtrusive corner of the Harry Potter films.

As has been pointed out, Joss isn't doing a re-make of the old TV series, sorry for you guys who can't think that far for yourselves. He is doing an interpretation of the comic book series, which is much more his thing than digging up decripit old TV ideas and re-cycling them.

Depending on What the person playing Wonder Woman looks like, Lynda Carter would make a good choice as her Mother on Paradise Island (Themyscira)

The mother thing doesn't really work since all the Amazons are young looking despite being centuries old, WW's mother wouldn't have to look much older than WW. If they are interpretation the modern comic maybe a role as one of the first people WW meets after she leaves Themyscira. But a nod to the old TV show should be much a priority. the character had about 35yrs of history prior to the TV show ever airing, so I wouldn't label it as a TV remake. It could easily go in another direction and stay true to the source material. Not that it will.

Dear All,
The New Wonder Woman Movie is a tough one to cast, does he go for an Action Girl look or an innocent. I think the plot of the movie will start with a naive Wonder Woman who ventures out into the 'World of Man' and therefore I think an actress like Kristen Kreuk would be ideal. I'd anticipate a global warming based story.
Cheers
David.
