BREAKING: United 93 World Premiere to Open Tribeca
Filed under: Drama, Tribeca, Newsstand
It's being reported on the wires this afternoon that
United 93 will have its world premiere on April 25, opening
the Tribeca Film Festival. The film (the new trailer is here) was written and directed by Paul Greengrass, and tells the determinedly reality-based story of what
happened aboard the flight that crashed in a Pennsylvania field during the 9/11 attacks. Unlike most festival openings,
however, the United 93 screening will not be a gala event. In fact, festival organizers have told Cinematical
that the event will be unusually low-key, and has been designed with the families of 9/11 victims in mind.Instead of a traditional red carpet arrival ceremony, complete with a glamorous party following the opening event, the screening will be private, open only to the families of victims, first responders, and festival staff. Press will be accommodated in an overflow room, but will not be allowed into the actual theater. The screening itself will be followed by what is being called a "low-key conversation dinner," again with limited attendance. In addition, out of respect for the those affected by the events of 9/11, the opening will not be held in the Tribeca (the neighborhood that is home to Ground Zero); negotiations are currently underway to hold it at a landmark theater in midtown Manhattan.

I read somewhere that United 93 won't be screened at TFF's 68th street venue. Do you know anything about that?

Katrina: We know for sure that the film is not going to be screened in Tribeca, and from the information I've been given, 68th street doesn't sound likely, either. I've heard that the Festival is 90% sure that the premiere will take place at a theater in midtown (think about 13 blocks south), but doesn't want to announce it until they're 100% sure.
