News from Slackerwood: Film Series Mania

Filed under: Quentin Tarantino, News From Slackerwood

I have never seen so many film series starting in one week in one town in my whole life. Whether you prefer silent-film actresses, Chinese martial arts, classic widescreen films, or the fun of outdoor movie-viewing, Austin has a film series for you. April and May are going to be wonderful months for a variety of film programming in Austin.

  • Adam and Steve, the film that opened the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (aGLIFF) last year, is playing all week at Dobie Theatre. Also at Dobie this week, AFS@Dobie presents the German comedy Go for Zucker.
  • Free coffeehouse movies: Austin Java is showing Intolerable Cruelty tonight (3/31) at 8 pm. Ventana del Soul is starting an Anime Movie Monday series on 4/3 at 7:30 pm with Excel Saga, which I assume has nothing to do with Microsoft.
  • Alamo Downtown is showing the documentary Trudell several times in the next week: Sunday 4/2, Monday 4/3, and Wednesday 4/5. The 2005 film details the life of Native American artist/activist John Trudell.
  • If you never did catch Murderball in theaters, you have one more chance ... and for a good cause. Mark Zupan, who is featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary, will be in attendance at a Monday 4/3 screening of the film at Alamo on South Lamar. The screening is a benefit for the Texas Stampede Wheelchair Rugby team.
  • Only Alamo Drafthouse would show The Warriors and offer you mini beer bottles to clink together in harmony with the film. You can see the film at Alamo on South Lamar from Monday-Wednesday 4/4-6.
  • Austin Film Society has announced its next film series, which is right up my alley: "3 Actresses Abroad," focuses on the work of Anna May Wong, Josephine Baker, and Louise Brooks. The series begins on Tuesday 4/4 at Alamo Downtown with the 1929 British film Piccadilly, starring Wong.
  • Alamo on South Lamar is also kicking off a new series, "Widescreen Classics," with Lawrence of Arabia. The film screens on Tuesday-Wednesday 4/4-5; in addition, a movie-and-Arabian feast screening will take place on Thursday 4/6.
  • Quentin Tarantino is hosting another one of his unique QT Fests in Austin next month, from April 24-30. This time, he's compiling a "Best of QT Fest" with films from the six previous series. Badges go on sale Tuesday morning 4/4 and will sell out almost immediately. If you miss out, single-film tickets will be available on each night of the fest.
  • Austin filmmaker Kyle Henry's film Room (photo above), which screened at Sundance and Cannes last year, is finally seeing theatrical release. Austin Film Society is hosting the Austin premiere of the film on Thursday 4/6 at Alamo on South Lamar. The premiere is a benefit for the Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund.
  • Austin Film Society and Alamo Downtown are bringing a UCLA Film and Television Archive series to Austin: "Heroic Grace 2: The Martial Arts Classics of the Shaw Brothers." If you're a Shaw Brothers fan, or want to be, this is an excellent opportunity to catch these films in a theater. The series kicks off on Thursday 4/6 with The Magic Blade, a 1976 film about an ambitious swordsman on a quest.
  • One more series starts this week: "Rolling Roadshow: American Screen Legends," will take place at The Glenn at The Backyard. Rebel Without a Cause opens this series on Thursday 4/6 at 8:30 pm. Admission is free.
