Cinematical Seven: Actresses Who Should NOT Play Wonder Woman
Filed under: Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Cinematical Seven, Joss Whedon, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

Here's what we know right now: Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) is re-visiting the character of Wonder Woman and bringing an updated version to the big screen. However, since the film was announced, a slew of names have come and gone, leaving us with absolutely no idea who will finally land the coveted role.
Over the last few weeks, we've reported on all of the Wonder Woman rumors, debated who should and shouldn't play the sexy, kick-ass superhero, while listening to all of you comment and tell us your opinion. Well, now it's time to get serious. Since Whedon can't seem to decide who he wants for the role, we're going to help narrow down the selection for him. It's time we take a stand people! This is Wonder Woman we're talking about - let's attempt to make it so Joss doesn't screw this up.
The following is a list of seven actresses who should definitely not be playing Wonder Woman. I feel, as a community, if we can keep adding to this list, then eventually it will be narrowed down enough to a point where we will all agree on the perfect name. The perfect female. The perfect Wonder Woman.
- Britney Spears - Since we're not casting Blunder Woman, I shouldn't have to try too hard to convince you why Britney would not make a good Wonder Woman. First off, having just had a baby and rumored to be pregnant yet again, physically I'm quite sure Spears couldn't cut it. Secondly, Joss Whedon would instantly lose his entire fan base, as well as any further posts from me on Cinematical. And last, but certainly not least, the girl can't act.
- Katie Holmes - While Katie does have the whole cute brunette thing going on, do you actually believe Master Tom would let her take this kind of role? And even if he did let her become Wonder Woman, there's no way he would grant her permission to wear the classic costume. Face it, Katie's pretty smile and adorable voice was perfect for Dawson's Creek, however she couldn't even handle a dramatic moment with Dawson without crying - can you imagine her taking on Wonder Woman? That's the point, we don't want to imagine it. Next!
- Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen - Last time I checked, Wonder Woman was not an anorexic billionaire. While there's definitely room to fit the character into their merchandising empire, these girls are just way too delicate for the role. I mean, I guess if one of them accidentally breaks in half during shooting, then at least we have a back up. Right?
- Sharon Stone - Sorry Sharon, there are no gratuitous sex scenes for woman over 40 to be found in this superhero flick. While the audience would probably love to see Wonder Woman get down with her bad self, something tells me there's just too much fake, plastic evil behind Stone's... eyes.
- RuPaul - It's probably best that, for the role of Wonder Woman, Joss chooses someone who didn't disappear from the spotlight ten years ago. Not only that, but a 6-foot something drag queen may not do so well at the box office.
- Dame Judi Dench - Well, if anyone would walk away from the role of Wonder Woman with an Academy Award nomination, it would be Dame Judi. It really doesn't matter what the woman is in, anything she touches seems to turn to award statue. However, the age and hottie factor will definitely pose a problem...unless Joss is gearing his film towards people above and beyond their fifties.
- Hugh Jackman - Yeah, I know he's not an actress, but at this point, he's proved himself worthy of playing a comic book superhero. I say we let Hugh grow his hair out again, slap some make-up on him and let him have fun with it. Hey, what if we had him dress as Wolverine and team up with Wonder Woman? Seeing as folks are looking to milk that character as much as they can, it may not be such a bad idea. No?
Is there anyone else who belongs on this list? Speak up now or forever hold back those awful comments once a decision has been made.

No one over the age of 29 should (or will) be considered for this role.
More people to rule out:
Jennifer Connelly
Lucy Lawless
Chyna
Catherine Bell
JLo
Charisma Carpenter
Angelina Jolie
Best choices:
Morena Baccarin
Jodi Lyn O'Keefe
Nadia Bjorlin

I like the Jodi Lyn O'Keefe idea. She's on the new show The Evidence, but I hope her role expands over time.
Morena Baccarin is a obvious choice, considering the Joss connection.
But, I think Charisma Carpenter would be great for the role. She's got a lot more range than she's given credit for.
Catherine Bell would be good too, but I agree, the choice should skew younger.

No, Linsday Lohan, for pretty much the same reasons as the Olsen Twins. Wonder Woman, should be just that, a woman.

Not Catherine Zeta-Jones who has publicly stated she thinks the character is stupid. So she has two strikes against her.(one- I can't stand her and two-she thinks Wonder Woman is stupid- definitely not the role for someone like her.)
I can't get behind Nadia Bjorlin either- in fact I won't see the movie if either she or CZ-J or someone just totally wrong for the role are cast. Bjorlin doesn't scream Amazon Princess to me. I honestly don't find her all that attractive either- though beauty is subjective.
As for who I want: as I've said the last few times-
CHARISMA CARPENTER- she is perfect for the role I tell you- perfect!

Charisma is the correct choice. FOr somereason I don't like her that much, but as soon as I saw her name it fit.
Connelly and Bell are too old (for the part, not in general), but they would otherwise have been good in my opinion. I guess Connelly'd have to lighten up a bit first.
I think Zeta-Jone and O'Keefe are wrong for it.

Who is the actress that plays Lois Lane in Smallville ...Erica Durance? I think she is the perfect age and build to play Wonder Woman.

Morena Baccarin should be the first, last, and only choice for the role. Alas, I fear they'll want a "name" for the part after how Serenity went.
*sigh*

I don't like Charisma Carpenter. At all. Not one bit. Seriously.
And I think she's perfect for the role.

Morena Baccarin or Charisma Carpenter -- right look, right build, they feel like Wonder Woman. Especially Morena Baccarin. Plus, if either of them were cast, I would love Joss Whedon even more -- major picture, not *very* big names -- because he would show that he's staying with the actors with whom he's built a name for himself and there's something smart about that. Not that he can't add new actors to the list -- I like that suggestion of Michelle Rodriguez, she's a badass.

I love the Joss women, but I think he should bring in someone else. I love Charisma on Buffy/Angel and Veronica Mars, but superhero movies are already pretty close to the camp line as it is and I think she would make WW way too campy. I think she'd be even campier than RuPaul. Also, I love Morena, but I think she's too delicate and astonishingly beautiful for the role. You need a woman of stature with a touch of naive innocence but steely determination. Someone stoic who can in a way fade into the WW myth. I think CC and MB in a way have too much screen presence to do that.

I'm pretty much with Jennifer. Morena would be very good, but I fear the lesson of Serenity is that a "name" counts.
But not Barbra Streisand.

I don't know if Joss intends to do Diana Prince, as well, but if he does then I think WW needs screen presence, but that Diana needs to be able to fade away. She has less alter-ego disguise to rely on than Superman. Christopher Reeve did the duality great as Superman/Clark. Our actress needs to be able to play both roles as well, if Joss goes that way.
Also, don't get too hung up on age. It's not that she's young, but that she is new to the world, first time away from the Amazons. She's inexperienced, not immature.
I love Morena, but I'm not sure if she is Amazonian enough. So here's my list:
Charisma.
Catherine Heigl (sp?)
Aisha Tyler (True amazon).
Morena (she'd be a joy to watch anyway)
Erica Durance

Anyone shorter than 5'9" tall and less than 150 lbs should not be Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is an AMAZON..not a little cute anorexic bubble gum headed twit.

what about anne hathaway. she has the hight for it and she could play the part in that outfit and still seem innocent. obviously they cant get a un known becuse thats what there doing with superman and i think it will suck. but if they use too big a star it will also flop. the key to these movies are useing peaple from dramatic or indi backgrounds. aka toby meguier, the new batman guy "forgetting his name".

I personally think Joanie Laurer/Chyna could play her well. She's big enough for the part - physically (5'10"), she's pretty (in my opinion), and she can act. Hell, she even dressed up as her for some awards show one time (see link at the bottom for proof if you need it), so if Joss asked her, I'm sure she'd be up for the task. :)

NOT: Charisma - I love her but I don't think she can carry a wide-release movie.
NOT: Anne Hathaway unless she's grown past the awkward stage - WW is not awkward!
Possibly: Katherine Heigl (Roswell) - She could do this, even with a dye job a la Lucy L. She definitely has the build and the acting chops.
