Freddy Krueger: The Prequel
Filed under: Horror, New Line, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
This should come as no surprise to anyone who hangs in the horror end of the movie pool, but New Line is apparently
gearing up to give us an all-new Freddy Krueger misadventure. No, not another sequel or an odd little experiment like
New Nightmare -- but a prequel that plans to cover the
back-story of the pre-dead Freddy Krueger, his unseemly relationship with numerous small children, and the neighborhood
parents who strike back ... thereby creating an undead boogeyman who'll haunt them for the next 8 movies. Those never-slumbering horror geeks at BD.com got word recently that a director has been chosen for this project, an admired and established filmmaker who is certainly no stranger to scary cinema. And that director is ... John McNaughton, the filmmaker who debuted with the undeniably creepy Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer before moving on to crime dramas (Mad Dog & Glory), pulpy sex thrillers (Wild Things), and comedies so bad they never saw a stateside theatrical release (Speaking of Sex). No word yet on screenwriters, release dates, or cast additions, but McNaughton and Robert Englund (Krueger, Fred Krueger) are apparently already on board.
So ... Jason and Freddy do battle in their combo movie, and then each of the beloved slashers get their own "origin story" prequel. Smart move, if only from a "squeezing the last drops of blood from two popular franchises" perspective.

As much as I want Bob to get work, it seems weird that he will be playing (the living) Freddy as a fairly old man (he is pushing 60)... also, i don't know if i really want to see Freddy's child murdering antics on the silver screen... We'll see though, it could be good.

As much as I will regret saying this, we need a new horror franchise.
Jason in Space should have been enough to kill the series as well as the Versus film.

I think this is a great idea. I've always said it since I was about 14 that they should do a prequel of the Freddy movies. To show how he became who he is. I think its about time they do this because if you think about it, what's scarier than seeing him before he was burned and getting to the mind of why he killed kids. I think its genius. I'm so excited!!!

I love the Nightmare Anthology and while I'm not completely opposed to a prequel, I hate to read that Englund thinks they will be taking a CSI type approach to it. I'm all for it being procedural, but I hope the CSI comparison ends up being unfounded.
McNaughton has got chops though, so I'm all for it.

I'm so excited! I've always been obsessed with Freddy Kruegar. I've also thought they should show what he was like alive. I can't wait!!!

LISTEN PEOPLE WE ALREADY KNOW THE BACKSTORY OF THIS ICONIC AND BELOVED HORROR CHARACTER, WE WERE INTRODUCED TO IT ON "DREAM WARRIORS" AND REMINDED OF IT ON "DREAM MASTER" AND "DREAM CHILD" AND ALL THE WAY TO "FREDDY'S DEAD". WHILE PREQUELS HAVE BECOME A TREND AND AT TIMES THEY'VE WORKED OUT AND SOMETIMES FAILED, THIS TIME AROUND IT MIGHT JUST CATER TO THE TEENAGE HORROR MOVIE FANS. WHO KNOWS, MAKE UP AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY MIGHT MAKE MR. ENGLUND LOOK 30 YEARS YOUNGER BUT THE FRANCHISE IS OLD AND A THING OF THE PAST. YOU KNOW WHAT? BRING IT ON! THE BOX OFFICE WILL DECIDE IF IT'S ALIVE OR JUST A DREAM...

i've been a Krueger fan for a long time and some of the movies kind of make the back story, at times, contradicting (watch freddy's dead and see what i mean) but i think that if we as krueger fans know and are shown the definitive background once and for all then our questions about freddy's predilections would have been answered. freddy's dead still didnt answer all my questions and i frankly would be so happy if they let us in on freddy's dirty little secrets. but i do agree with the fact that i would not enjoy the CSI route, i see freddy cuz i like the horror aspect of it, i dont want to see a mystery movie. but lets make freddy live and breathe once again!!!
