A "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" Movie?
Filed under: Comedy, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking
While it's been difficult over the last few days to
sort out which April Fools' rumors are real and which are false, this one seems somewhat legit, so why not give it
a shot? According to a certain little gossip monkey over at Moviehole, Will Smith is in talks to revive The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and bring it to the big
screen.
However, it appears he'll only be producing the film through his Overlook Entertainment and not starring as Mr. Fresh -- probably because, well, the guy is long past his early 20s. Not much else is being said about the project, only that Smith is now on the lookout for youngsters to reprise the popular role.
Here's my question to Mr. Smith: Sir, what drugs are you on? Sure, the show was a big hit, um, 16 years ago, but what leads you to believe the gimmick will be successful today, let alone provide enough juice to squeeze out a feature film? On the other hand, you find a hot young actor (Is Bow Wow hot?), cast Bernie Mac as your rich father and throw Smith a cameo appearance, then maybe you've got the foundation for a hit -- except they would have to lose the word "fresh" immediately. What do you think?

Speaking as the only person besides Roger Ebert that reveled in the formulaic cheesy goodness that was Roll Bounce, Bow Wow (good call) and not Bernie Mac but CHI McBRIDE would be ideal as the Fresh Prince (I doubt they'll keep the character name as Will Smith...) and Uncle Phil.

I'd like to see them continue the same story line with the same actors playing the same characters, except now Will is out of college and living "in the area" of Bellaire and doing well, when he picks up a second cousin (Bow wow) from Philly once again, who needs the same sort of guidance Will needed The original cast other than Will would only need minimal roles. If they try and re-shoot the same story again with new actors, it will suck, because what made that show work was Will's natural charm and charisma, which, sadly Bow wow couldn't hold a candle to.

They should keep the same characters and actors but make it an action adventure film. The Fresh Prince gets kidnapped by aliens from the planet Zorgaisiuhiqqe. Uncle Phil jumps into action; he buys a used space shuttle on the black market while Ashley takes flying lessons. Carlton leads the charge on the Zorgaisiuhiqqe underground prisons with a flame thrower in one hand a musket in the other. The older sister goes shopping at the local Zorgaisiuhiqqe mall while all this is going on. The Fresh Prince is rescued by Carlton, but he gets to have a mano y mano judo fight with the leader of the aliens after a musical rap number.

I think Carlton will need Chuck Norris's help.

Obviously you are not a parent of tweens. They simply love Will Smith and the Fresh Prince show. As evidence I offer the Nickoloden Award for best actor. Most of the young voters have only seen him in the Fresh Prince re runs.

Has Hollywood run out of original ideas. Everything now is re-hash of old out of date TV shows that people have long forgotten. Bring in some fresh big screen writers.

They're reaching. Enough already! Hated the show then and no doubt, will hate the movie now. What's up with Hollywood anyway's? A black Kojak and Wild Wild West, Ice Water as kotter. Come on Hollywood! Make great films with the right actors. These actors are ok actors, only not in these parts. No Fresh film.
