Spielberg To Create A Reality Show?
Filed under: RumorMonger, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Steven Spielberg
Look, I really enjoyed the Project Greenlight series. While I will agree that IFC's Film School was a more educational show to watch
for those of you out there dying to jump right into filmmaking (do keep in mind NYU did provide them with a lot of
equipment), Greenlight really showed what it's like to do battle with a studio. Of course, in the "real
world," all of those contest winners would have been immediately replaced by seasoned veterans.
That being said, Steven Spielberg is looking to bring a little bit of Greenlight to his next big project -- a reality television show. Seriously? Spielberg? Reality TV? If I were joking, you would know by now. Seriously, the director wants to create a show in which aspiring Spielbergs compete to direct a movie that he will produce. Right now, it's being pitched as Project Greenlight meets The Apprentice meets another show only us movie geeks will watch.
Honestly, it sounds like a fun idea ... even though I'm sure Spielberg himself will only appear in a couple episodes. However, you know a ton of folks will jump at the chance to be involved in one of his projects, so casting the film might get interesting. I'm also curious to see if Tom Hanks becomes involved, and to what capacity, seeing as the two have been imaginary lovers for some time now. Oh yeah, I just went there! What do you think about that?

The problem with most reality TV shows like Project Greenlight seem to be that these contest winners have their 15 minutes of fame and then their film careers are on hold until further notice.
When reality television shows edit how a contest winner responds to problems on set and deals with egos, oftentimes the contest winner appears to be incompetent and, unfortunately, that seems to make the show better.
I'm hoping and expecting that a show pushed by Spielberg would at least try to attract more deserving and seasoned filmmakers to this reality TV show. So instead of being a show about novices making movies, it can be a show about professionals and experts dealing with egos and problems on set to make a movie.
I'd look forward to a show like that.

That sounds interesting, also like some weird rumor. We have the software game of "film industry" and the Lego like thingie for the kids. Maybe it would include past stories of production, like Marilyn Monroe's mom working in film-editing, or the row over labor at Disney's animation studio, those artists that used to fill in between the major artists cels, etc., and what editing was like? A cousin in editing filled in for the sick news director of "Huntley and Brinkley" (funny how network news has come back to its original format, about 15 minutes the networks will let them have after commercials) and went on to direct and produce television news for NBC and CBS. "Film at eleven" was quite a promise! Like the kid's book, "T.V. Humphrey" a trip around a studio, could be a good thing. Maybe it would help bring post-production to NYC, a pet project of the actor Mr. Aiello, and others.

I can see what Neil means, and knowing fliming, I am sure they are going to get a TON of frustration out of everyone! I agree, and hope that they do it for the content of the short being filmed and not to make more drama than there is.
Here is a question. If there really is a series set, then are filmakers are needed? Anyone know how they are picking them out. They should open it up to all, instead of those just in Hollywood or CA. Just a question followed by an opinon!

Here is another thought. I did some more reading on this. They will take 16 finalists, split them up into groups of 8 and make on the director, the others the producers. They will be given Hollywood writers, actors and crew members. I guess the director will get to shine, but with 7 others producing, it will be a scramble. I would much like to see the contestants doing the positions, fit a director with a writer and gaffer, electricians, key grips, camera etc and have them be mentored maybe by professionals while they make the film. That to me would see more interesting, giving them more space to really shine as fully functional by themselves.
I guess we would also have to see how it all really works. I'm interested.

This show won't last too long, if the short films produced by its contestants bear any resemblence to...short films, which are almost always insufferable, expect when designed as a parody of something else.
Come to think of it, they should probably borrow the American Idol trick of using exclusively off-the-shelf content. Let the little would-be's reshoot well known scenes from established films and, so to say, make these their own.
"Tune in tonight, and see how a simple country girl from Wyoming uses Eisenstein Montage Theory to re-interpret the (first) candle-dance sequence from 'Practical Magic'. Guest Judge: Michael Cimino."
I realize how absurd this sounds, and I realize it amounts to a ban on originality, but that's what will make the show work. Broadcasting an endless catalog of crap like "Lick the Star", is precisely what will get it killed.

On my site, since 2005, 7 writers are competing in a literary reality show; who writes the best story will save the world. It's MY idea, mr. Spieblerg (can you please tell him?)

The whole is a very good idea, because I already live the whole time after the sentence:
Dreams until they become true.
I heard here in Switzerland of the fact and hope that I can become candidate. Best wishes out of Switzerland, and the part in the village where I live: Heiligholz (Holywood)
