Diesel's Hannibal Lives?
Filed under: Action, Drama, RumorMonger, Newsstand
Back in the heady days of xXx, Vin
Diesel frequently told the press that he was about to start shooting Hannibal, a movie he would both direct and star in, based on Ross
Leckie's (really poorly-reviewed) fictionalized
memoir of that elephant guy from Carthage. Needless to say, it didn't happen. Still, every couple of years Diesel
tells somebody that his pet project is on the verge of production; the press can be forgiven for adopting a
wait-and-see approach in the face of his latest claim that work really is about to begin. This time, though, there actually does seem to be movement on the project: the AP reported this week that Diesel has chosen locations in California, the Dominican Republic (where the movie will shoot for a month), and Spain, and Diesel himself has been talking about his post-Find Me Guilty time spent "scouting for elephants...that are of worth." (Casting calls apparently went out on elephant message boards world-wide, and the great creatures traveled from far and wide to be seen by Diesel and his crew, hoping for that one chance at stardom.) There are also some unsettling rumors that Diesel wants to shoot the film in Punic, "a dialect of Phoenician...that hasn't been spoken in 2,000 years," but those sound more like big talk than anything else, and are probably best ignored until we see actual cameras and crew at one of these supposed locations.

?!Vin Diesel wants to revivify an ancient language, even if merely for the duration of a movie!?
!AWEsome! !Kudos unto him, even if it won't work out!
How much more int'restin' {Gladiator} were gonna be,
if Ridley Scott had made that movie in Latin
(There was yeah some Old High German in the openin'
scene, where-by some Germanic warrior cast the head
of the Roman envoy back toward the Roamn line,
and shouted something like "Ye'll all get munched on
by hounds!"); at LEAST he could have allowed Russell
Crowe to use a Hispanic accent, instead of bidding him
to expose himself unto {South Park}'s ridicule
fore his Australian accent --"OY! OY! Oy'm a SPAN-
yud! OY!"--. !And may Mel Gibson manage to make his
intended film about ancient MesoAmericans in Mayan!
!In any case kudos unto Vin Diesel fore intending
to introduce more ancient history into ?post-?modern
cinema!

Using a 2,000 year old dead language seems rather pretentious and self indulgent to me. I for one hate going to a movie when I have to spend more time reading the dialogue than watching the actors move and express their character.

When he first got into films, he was good. A good action type guy. He was scary in Pitch Black. When he got popular, he started to lose his appeal. He's a nice guy, and he can act. I think stardom went to his head, and that kind of doomed him. I mean, The Pacifier? A shame.

I think the movie will do good. The pacifier was movie done for his nieces and nephews so that they can have a movie to see their uncle in, it may not have been a great movie but he had fun in making it for kids who wanted to go see him. I mean look at Arnold, Kindergarten Cop come on.

I think Diesel oughta direct Stallone as Hannibal speaking Punic (could anyone really understand Stallone's English anyway?)...now that would be very Monty-Pythonesque...

Great news. I am hoping he will get to see his dream
come true. He is a man of vision and talent. Of
course the studios will not understand his vision,
since they are very stupid and very silling superficial people. I wish him great good luck.

Is Vin Diesel's career over? How many bombs are the powers that be going to allow him to make? His last film was in theatres about 3 days. You don't need to be a genius to know his films make no money....and hasn't Hannibal been done already [with Anthony Hopkins]? I predict another flop.

Vin Diesil was on late night and gave an example of this language and it was the hottest words I ever heard. Did I understand it? No way, but I would listen to Vin speak to me in any language all day long. When your that good looking and have that extraordinary voice, you'll go any where to see and hear him.

Vin Diesel was good in Pitch Black, but didn't really live up to his own hype until "Find Me Guilty" in which he actually was required to act and he did it well.
I look forward to any movie requiring him to do more than flex and growl.

Vin Diesel is one of the few new actors from the Class of the 1990s who can actually act, given a good script. For example: Pitch Black, Boiler Room and The Fast and The Furious = good scripts, good acting by Vin. Whereas, The Chronicles of Riddick, The Pacifier and xXx = poor scripts, poor acting. I will definitely go to see Vin in Hannibal, regardles of the language he films it in. I just hope it has a good script.

I think it's a very good idea. I wouldn't do the entire movie in the language.. after all, the intellect of the american population has dropped quite a bit. They might not be able to catch on. The story of Hannibal is a fascinating one though, and I'd love to see it on the big screen. Some movie ideas literally take a decade or so before coming to fruitition, and this critic seems to forget that point. I could see Vin playing the Barbarian king quite well. I think he should go for it. I'd go see it. I love historical films, especially if they're intelligent ones. He's a lot smarter than people like to give him credit for. Perhaps they're just jealous that he's a beautiful example of a man and they're not?

I think it sounds like an extraordinary project. Anything that pays homage to an ancient language I'm all for. However, If it doesn't pan out I think he should continue from "The Chronicles of Riddick" An excellent science fiction story in my opinion.
