More From the Broken Lizard Team
Filed under: Comedy, Deals, Warner Brothers, Newsstand
I don't know the details of the deal that the guys of
the Broken Lizard comedy troupe made with the devil, but I think I want in.
First, they made the wildly successful Super Troopers (it
made more than six times its $3 million budget during its theatrical release), and the bomb they don't like to talk
about, Club Dread. Then, member Jay Chandrasekhar directed the crappy-but-profitable Dukes of
Hazzard, which got the whole group a production deal with Warner Brothers. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong here,
but that sequence of events simply could not have occured naturally. Damn Broken Lizard for their outrageously good
opportunities! The group's first movie with Warners is the highly-anticipated Beerfest which, in case you've forgotten, is fondly described as "Fight Club with beer games," and stars the Broken Lizard lads and comedy genius Ryan Reynolds. The film is currently in post-production, and is due out this August. The second Warner's project, Ambulance Chasers, has just been announced. As you might expect, given that subtlety isn't one of Broken Lizard's primary weapons, it's exactly what it sounds like, the story of "what happens when two fiercely competitive personal-injury lawyers fight over a new client." The script is being written by Jon Zack, and Chandrasekhar will once again direct.

They have nothing to be ashamed of concerning Club Dread. It's no Super Troopers but has its moments... and Dukes of Hazzard was nowhere near the cinematic antichrist of 2005 that Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo was. As a matter of fact, the Super Troopers reference in Dukes was worth the viewing price.
I'm looking forward to Beerfest but "Fight Club with beer games?" Wasn't that what Old School was?

I am a big fan of Broken Lizard and all that they do. I have not seen "Dukes" since it wasn't their writing, but I respect Jay's direction.
I cannot wait for Beerfest. In reading other reviews and interviews I have tried to piece together how the plot will run and have not had much luck. They're remaining rather tight-lipped, which is fine.
For a great look into how the Broken Lizard team interacts off the camera (though on camera) watch the roughly 30 minute featurette on the Puddle Cruiser DVD on how they promoted the film.
Puddle Cruiser is their first film, and like Club Dread will not draw much high praise, but has its moments and is great for us die hards.
