Monday Morning Poll: Summer's Most Disappointing Blockbuster?
Filed under: Action, Critical Thought, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, FanFilms, Steven Spielberg, Comic/Superhero/Geek
In a little over a week, Mission Impossible 3 will crash-land in theaters marking the
official start of the summer blockbuster season. Why are you not excited about this? C'mon, it's
summer! It's time to escape the heat and cool down in front of a film that cost more money than you or anyone you
know will ever see in their entire life. What's NOT fun about that?
While some feel this year's crop of popcorn flicks are a bit smarter than previous years, like with every summer, we're bound to walk away from it sad, lonely and depressed because that one film we were anticipating so much left an awfully sour taste in our mouths. Last year, Michael Bay's The Island tanked, despite its gigantic budget. And, even though it made a killing at the box office, some felt Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds just wasn't up to par.
This year, it's completely up in the air. Personally, I don't have a very good feeling about Superman Returns. Sure, you can throw a ton of good buzz my way, claim Brandon Routh will revive the Man of Steel in a way that would make Christopher Reeve proud and tell me Bryan Singer made a good choice when he stepped away from the X-Men series -- but it just doesn't feel right. I'm calling it now -- this film will disappoint.
So, that leaves me wondering: Which summer blockbuster do you feel will turn out to be the most disappointing?

WAR OF THE WORLDS should have been done as a real period piece -- the original novel, set in England. I'll probably die before this gets made.

I hear MI3 is good thanks to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, so it wouldn't surprise me if it does well. However, because of Tom Cruise it wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't do well.
I think Superman will do well. It reminds of the first X-Men movie in that people seem tot want to see it. It might not make the most money this summer, but I fully expect it to pay for itself.

Are we talking "disappointing" from a quality standpoint or from a financial standpoint?
Quality-wise, I'm wary of "Cars," which doesn't amuse me in the least in trailer form. And I'd be lying if the whole Bret Ratner thing didn't concern me on "X-Men: The Last Stand." And all of the buzz about "Superman" involves its reported 150-minute-plus running time, which also concerns me.
On a financial level, I don't have a clue why people are high on "Poseidon." It seems unnecessary on several levels.

I don't think Bryan Singer is the greatest director ever but I think he made a hell of a superhero movie. So my hopes are that Superman will be as good as either of 2 the X-Men movies he made. My hopes for X3 are much lower. I think Ratner's bitten off more than he can chew. There's a lot of room for failure there. Red Dragon showed us that he can successfully mime the mood (if not necessarily the aesthetic) of a previous film so at least we won't really be looking at a Burton-to-Schumacher-esque shift in tone from X2 to X3. But as for how satisfying it's going to be... I'm not sold yet.

They'll all be disappointing. My only reason to see MI3 is Maggie Q. http://maggieq.net/

I think MI3 will be disappointing. It's just doesn't seem that interesting. I guess, I'm not in the majority here, but I'm pretty excited about Superman Returns and X3. Even if X3 is just a 2 hour continous battle between the Brotherhood and the X-men, it will kick butt. I have nothing against Brett Ratner, but I think almost any director could have made this movie (well, maybe not Joe Schumacher). They just had to keep the look and feel of X1 & X2 and continue with it. As for Superman, I think it's about time. Superman resonates with people on a certain level. Look how well Batman Begins did, even though there were several Batman movies not too long ago. It's been a while since the last Superman movie (good and bad ones).

I'm "dissappointed" that someone will be dissappointed in regards to Superman Returns. It's got a good superhero director, good budget, good actors via Spacey and others, and I believe that the biggest pull will be the Superman franchise itself, the comics are going well right now in the DCU, the longing for a Superman has been long awaited, and the direction sounds to be alot more interesting than with other comic-to-movie storylines. I'm very much looking forward to this movie and I see that I'm with the majority on this one atleast. Alot of bad movies doesn't mean this is gonna be one, I for one have alot of faith in the idea of Superman and it's position in old and new generation's hearts. This will surely be kick-ass, and hopefully Wonderwoman will be too but I'm less confident about that one. Will be watching this one in the local IMAX for sure!

Omen 666 - by far.
But in all seriousness I think Cars stands to be the one to take the biggest hit. But not because the movie may or may not be bad. But because everyone has this thought that Pixar is a fricking awesome movie company and that each one of their movies has done better than the previous so people are expecting this one to do worse than The Incredibles. For me, I say give Pixar a break as it is damn hard to make a movie that will do better than the last, let alone 8 or however many they have put out.

I think all the people who stayed away from Batman Begins initially but later realized it was good via word of mouth and DVD will turn out for Superman in its first couple weeks to give it bigger box office than Batman.
Whether it will actually live up to the standard of Nolan's pic is another question, but Singer has as much superhero experience as any other director in the genre today (Raimi, del Toro, and Norrington haven't finished more than two each). Who would you rather make Superman?
As for Ratner, I like the images in the trailers so far (thank goodness Angel doesn't look like Bartleby and Loki)... except for the out-of-style material of Dark Phoenix's outfit (so 2002!) and the tranny with the jelly curl. But dude, the Golden Gate Bridge looks so awesome!
At least its short running time of 103 minutes (like the first one) should make up for Superman's lengthiness!

what's the deal? why is everyone so down about the movies this summer? it looks pretty promising people!!! mission impossible 3 should be golden - FINALLY getting back to a team mentality rather than the "try to be James Bond" feast we saw in the second one - and with Hoffman as the bad guy? ahhhh yes. if you aren't excited about the da vinci code, i suggest you go under ground for the next several months - it should be amazing - if you aren't hyped about it, read the book, get excited! ron howard teaming up with hanks again, and sir ian mckellan, alfred molina, jean reno, paul bettany - it gives me chills just thinking about it - with the success of the book and the controvsey around it, look for it to be huge. oh, and stop giving ratner a rough time - granted hes no bryan singer, he's still a quality director that will get the job done - if nothing else the "guru of the spoken word" ian mckellen, hugh jackman, patrick stewart and gang will lessen the load - itll be a fun one, maybe not better than the others, but look to be pleasantly surprised - if you aren't excited for captain jack sparrow to be back then i feel pity for you - look for johnny depp to delight once more behind the wheel of the black pearl- CARS!!! cars is gonna be just fine. people are looking for pixar to fail. the day may come, but this isn't it. it will have a broad audience appeal just like all pixar movies - i understand people not being thrilled by a trailer, but please don't be turned off by a 1:30 trailer that is directed towards kids. a trailer is not the movie! when theres a lot of fun stuff in there people always whine that they showed to much! they can't win! go see it. enjoy. bryan singer will bring back the superman franchise with gusto. a solid acting crew, and singer's baby that he has worked endlessly to perfect. he wouldn't have left x-men to come and ruin what some consider the most successful superhero movie franchise. itll gives us more of a real story then the previous four, and will surely kick butt. for lighter fair, click with adam sandler should be a fun one, and hopefully the break up will continue mr. vaughns success - get excited people! a fun movie summer indeed

You people are crazy. Why so down? This summer looks to be an awesome movie season. But you're thinking about the wrong films.
I want to get in line now for the DA VINCI CODE. Ron Howard is great, as are Tom Hanks, Audrey Tatou, Sir Ian and Pual Bettany. How can it not be very very good? I haven't read the book and don't intend to because the premise is stupid. But as a movie, I think it'll be money. The trailer excites me in ways I can't describe.
Plus there is a great crop of others. Michael Mann reshoots Collateral as Miami Vice? I'm there. Will Ferrel mocks NASCAR? Looks hilarious. Altman on Prarie Home Companion? At worst, that will interesting. And what about United 93? Does that count as summer? It could be great, if disturbing. Greengrass has skills and all I've seen makes it look tasteful.
MI3 looks to be the dumbest Tom Cruise vanity pice ever created. Even Hoffman couldn't save that. The trailer had me laughing uncontrolably at the idoicy. I'm guessing that's not what they were going for. Or maybe you're all excited because this film flows from the brilliant mind that brought us Armageddon. Ha!
Oh and forget the comic book nonsense. I haven't seen a good comic book movie since... wait I've never seen a good comic book movie. The first X Men is watchable, the old Supermans are decent, but most of the recent crop are just laughably bad and I don't know why anybody cares. Batman Begins was mediocre AT BEST. Mostly it was just stupid, the drama was forced, the acting overwrought (Remember Katie Holmes?) You all must be on crack or something. Or 11 years old.

How could someone be disappointed at something he hasn't seen yet?
That's a very pessimist way to think like that. And to top that, saying that the new Superman movie will disappoint. Superman is just not another superhero. He has always been an American icon. What could you possibly 'dislike' about him?
And Superman has a lot of fans (young and old) that will see this movie. We don't know yet how the movie will turn, but I think this is one of the films that will NOT disappoint.

I have yet to understand any hype around Mission Impossible III. The first was okay and the second was awful, kinda like Charlie's Angels but with just one flake, not three. I would argue that Tommy's Q rating among the young demo has fallen since Chef died.
X-Men III looks good. I assume most fans fear the dreaded Jedi curse (muppets??), whereas the third installment of any franchise disappoints immensley (Blade III, Batman III, Lethal Weapon III, Superman III, etc).
Superman lives only on the net. There's no hype outside it, which is disppointing given the history of the franchise.
The D Code was a great book, but the movie version actually came out a few years ago. It was called National Treasure.
I'm all for X III. That's it.

Anyone that has read my prior posts know that I want to see *Superman Returns* crash and burn at the box office because I think the cast and the script are absolutely wrong and is not on parr with the treatment that Batman received in his last cinematic outing. I think if this film tanks, it would force Warners to pay better care with the property instead of trying to spoonfeed us a film painted by numbers just so they could recupe all the money they blew on the pay-for-play deals with Nicholas Cage and Tim Burton a decade ago. I'm so cheesed off with the film that I will pay to go see *X-3* in spite of the fact that Brett Ratner is directing it.
I want to see the *Da Vinci Code* even if Paul Bettany knocked Christopher Eccleston from the role. May Eccleston return the favor to Bettany in the sequel to *Batman Begins*.
I will not see *M:I 3* despite the fact that Hoffman is probably awesome in it, as well as Ving Rhames. No more of my dollars will be going towards Mr. Cruise and his agenda. The entire franchise sucks (even though *M:I 2* was watchable due to the direction and other cast members) on a philosophical level ever since the original made Phelps the villain and killed him off just to give Cruise's created character the center stage. That was in bad taste and just rewards his vanity.
And don't even get me started on the Bond non-franchise. To me, it is now the equivalent of the Burt Reynolds deceased restaurant chain formerly known as "Po Folks".

I think MI3 will be a real hit. Paramount has just hired it's director to do the next Star Trek movie. Obviously, they liked what they saw.
Superman Returns I hope will be a hit. But it's somewhat odd that we haven't seen a feature trailer yet, aside from the teaser trailer that doesn't show much.

I think this summer we are in for a wonderful time. Not coz of Superman or MI 3 coz in my opinion they both fall low in quality. Yeah Superman could be good coz Batman Begins fared well in its 2 and half hour saga and since Superman is also a 2 and half hour saga, it could fare well.
My cash this summer is on Pirates of the Carribean. OK, its getting released only in July but still that's going to be one heck of a movie with Johnny Depp in the lead and Keira Knightley in the support role.( I hate Orlando Bloom). As I'm a very BIG fan of X-men I think the third film will rock too. But since the director has changed there's a chance of the flow being in a different direction. But addition of new characters may make up for this. Again but the reduction of time to 103 minutes can make the film a mixture of some action scenes and fights between opposites.
There is a possibility of the Da Vinci Code faring well due to the controversies and all but I'm not a big fan so I'll just let it pass along with the animation flicks.
for the other movies you can make your choice but do put your dibs on Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest!!!

SR a disappointment?!! dude all the trailers (especially the international version) have me excited. Come on how could you not get excited. Singer bringing back a franchise that has been absent almost 20 years, it's got Spacey, and Bosworth is hot. Plenty of buzz going around. and how the hell are all the ignoramuses able to fairly judge SR when it hasn't been released yet? I thought MI3 was by far the best of the series, it was back to focus on the team. Da Vinci Code was excellent, mostly accurate to the book. I'm looking forward to X3 and POTC. Not excited? There must be a bunch of old geezers on this site.
