Original Transformers Voice Actors Will Audition

Ain't it Cool News just scored an in-person meeting
with Michael "the Clonus Horror" Bay, director of 80's
nostalgia flick, Transformers. And while the first thing
Bay said was "I'm not telling you any of the story," he did share some interesting facts about his work on
the film. You can read all about the character models and whatnot over here -- some of it is interesting, most notably that Optimus
Prime will be a "mac truck" in his non-humanoid form. What I found the most intriguing in the light
interview was Bay's professed interest in auditioning the original voice actors from the classic Transformers
-- both Autobots and Decepticons. He's not committed to casting them, however, only to giving them a listen.
Apparently, he is (understandably) worried about how much their voices have altered over the years.I continue to be simultaneously excited for and fearful of this flick. I desperately want it to be awesome -- but memories of the hatchet job which was The Island loom large in my mind. After watching Michael Bay steal wholesale from the plot of an already terrible flick from the late 70's I simply can't trust the man to do anything even remotely related to awesome.

"Tansformers, more than meets the eye"
Heck yeah, this is going to be awesome when it comes out. I'm 28 years old but still remember that cartoon very well and would love to see the movie.

In Michael Bay's defense, he didn't write the script, it was sent to him by Steven Spielberg, who wanted to produce it with him. Even current it screenwriters Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (who did the rewrite after Bay was attached), admitted at a Creative Screenwriting Q&A that the script was derivative... Though they said that it was derivative before they ever got their hands on it, and that they were just responsible for script-doctoring type rewrites, which I presume means "Michael Bay-ing" up the script.

If there is a god.
To me it doesn't matter if their voices have changed slightly, It wont sound right unless the voices are as they were. Can you imagine Starscream without that whiney, harsh voice? I can't. Change the appearence not the chracters or story.

I think Bay can pull this off. And I think it is cool that he's willing to audition the original voice actors too. That's class. Obviously not a Warner Bros. production.
And its great that we're talking about the "original" *TransFormers* property and not the later properties, which are absolutely lame...just as *G.I. Joe Sigma 6* is a festering piece of poodoo.

I hope this doesnt become a huge product placement bonanza for auto companies. I dont want to see a KIA turning transforming into an Autobot. And, Optimus should be the slab-sided type of truck.

It's wonderful to hear that the original voice actors will be considered for their former Transformer roles.

It is good that there is at least a chance of the original voice actors returning for the move. However, at least a few of them have passed away. Scatman Crothers (Jazz) for one, and should Ultra Magnus be in the movie, Robert Stack is no longer with us.
Most notably, of course, will be the absence of Chris Latta from the cast. He was the voice of Starscream and while there have been many imitators, Michael Bey will be hard pressed to find a replacement the old school fans will approve of.

I canNOT wait for this!
Unlike some people, I don't trash on the newer properties; their mere presence doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the original series, you know. I'm also not rabid over having the original VAs in this movie - some just wouldn't be practical, after all, like Chris Latta for Starscream (since the man IS DEAD, after all). I think Paul Dobson does a WONDERFUL Starscream, myself, but that's another subject entirely :)
It's cool to hear that some of the originals ARE auditioning, though. It would be neat to have the original VA for Soundwave reprise his role, I think, and Optimus Prime's as well. Even if they don't GET the roles, it's still nice to know that they're giving it a shot.
Nocturne, anxiously awaiting the release of the movie most people said would Never Happen.

I don't mind product placement shots if it helps get the movie made. And I don't mind new voice actors, though obviously those of us who grew up with the original cartoons will always have those actors in our minds. Chris Latta's Starscream and Scatman Cruthers's Jazz will obviously have to be recast, but I'm sure Casey Kasem is practicing his Cliffjumper even now -- which basically sounds a lot like Casey Kasem.
My big concern is that the new film will fail to replicate the magic of the original series, which owes as much to the idealized memories of childhood as it does to the romanticism of everything '80s. Hopefully Michael Bay remembers what made the show so compelling in the first place: the humanity of these machines, and their archetypal struggle for good vs. evil mixed with a little paternalistic guidance.
Any bets on a Unicron appearance in the inevitable sequel?

Chris Latta is not his real name. His real name is Chris Charles Collins. There are lot of false bullshit from Matt Hale's White Supremacist groups website about Christopher Collins. His dad's name is Michael Warren Collins and he is married to the Dynamite Kid's sister Carol Billington or Carol Collins. Chris is suppose to look like his mother.

Bringing the Transformers back in CG form is no less than a guranteed smash. if like one of my fellow robots in disquies fans put it, they capture the magic of the "ROLL OUT" boys(err... bots) and the devious and down right sinisterness of the "DECEPTICREEPS". whatever the case may be, its PRIME time when "ALL ARE ONE".
I wonder......will RODIMUS make a cameo? GALVATRON or MEGATRON? will there be any giants, because i would love to see OMEGA-SUPREME

its about time that the transformers movie gets made...I think we will see that waaaaaaaaaaaay before seeing Indiana Jones 4.
I'm glad they are keeping it old school....none of this modern crap like beast wars or the current series on toon.
It will be great to see megatron as a gun insted of a tank (too much political correctness) I hope they have soundwave hes was my favorite next to starscream.
If spielburg...is behind it..it will be good....DOOMDEATH

"Autobots! Transform and roll out". To me this was one of the biggest phrases of the '80's. I grew up watching the adventures of Optimus Prime and his fellow Cybertron warriors. I cannot wait to see them in CG form. Over the years there have been many other Transformers shows with Beast Wars being the best second only to G1. Also may voice actors have come and gone trying to live up to the voices of the G1 characters. As others have said some of the original actors have past on, but the one person I would like to hear return is Peter Cullen-the original Optimus Prime. If he can't do it then I would like to hear the man who has been voicing the many forms of Optimus-Gary Chalk.
