JJ Semi-Refutes Star Trek 11 Gig
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Not too often do you hear about Variety getting a little too ... enthusiastic with a particular scoop, but
Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams has taken mild
exception to the
magazine's report on the filmmaker's involvement on Star Trek 11. Across the virtual pond at Empire Online, Mr. Abrams (who's also given the world
TV treats like Felicity, Alias, and Lost, none of which I watch but am told are quite ...
good) maintains that while he has been tapped to act as producer on a new Trek, he only has the 'option' to
direct -- and apparently he's not quite sure if he wants to just yet."The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," says the director with a hint of regret. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
So maybe Variety jumped with the story a bit more expeditiously than J.J. would have liked -- but I don't exactly see a denial between those quotation marks. Plus, news is news, right? It's all academic anyway: Even the smallest bread crumb of Star Trek 11 news will be picked up and reported on every website from Philly to Chile, so stay tuned, Spock-fans.
And yes, J.J. Abrams still wrote Gone Fishin'.

Jonathan Frakes has done good with the Trek stuff he's directed. I think he should do it.

If there is a choice, I would go with Nimoy because he did such a great job with IV----J.J. wouldn't be a bad second choice.

Well done sci-fi is on the endangered list. Whether J. J. Abrams, Jonathan Frakes, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, or even a chimpanzee as director, please make all of the arangements so we, the sci-fi lovers, can get to see the movie(s) in a timely manner. Star Trek is a sci-fi heavy that is in the blood of its' afficianados. Please just make it a good quality film. Other than re-runs, we need new storylines to satisfy the cravings.

Jonathan Frakes has done a great job with Star Trek movies he's directed. Bring Back Data though even if that means digging up Lor.
I'd also like a new Star Trek series. The Adventures of Captain Worf would be cool. Picture a combat hungry Klingon who does'nt do so well with peaceful solutions.

Having Abrams join the Trek crew behind the scenes is great. Having Trek XI made at all is also great. However, if it's true, recasting Kirk and Spock could be the single most boneheaded decision since And the Children Shall Lead. James Bond can be recast but I can't see anyone other than Shatner and Nimoy as Kirk and Spock. Having said that, I cheerfully ate my words when Next Gen delivered a damn fine show almost 20 years ago. We'll see what the future holds.

Just whatever you do, keep Brannon Braga and Rick Berman out of the production...they practically killed the franchise with Enterprise.

I've been a fan of Star Trek since it first aired in the sixties. I will probably watch anything with the name Star Trek attached. A story about Kirk and Spock during their early days at the academy sounds very interesting. However using Shatner and Nimoy in those roles would require some computer graphics probably not availabe yet. Casting two young unknowns would be my choice coupled with a well written script. Who cares who directs, etc. as long as they know what they're doing.

Having been a Trekkie all my life I am in love with the idea of another Star Trek movie. However, they need to do better than the last one! And the TNG cast is a bit old for another one of theirs, maybe Voyager or Enterprise?? One thing is for sure, it should definitely be Jonathan Frakes directing!!!!

I don't know why they're bringing the original cast back to a movie. The original Star Trek is nothing compared to the Next Generation cast. What we need is for someone to correct that horrible mistake called Nemesis and give us the Next Gen movie we actually want.

Any Star Trek news is good news. The original cast is a great idea! It is the REASON why all these newbies can even say the old cast is nothing compared to the new one. Actually old cast... new cast makes no difference to me......how about Star Wars vs. Star Trek...the way we used to dream about when StarLog magazine first came out??!!

As a true treekie, the old cast, TNG , DS9, Voyager or even Enterprise cast (last choice). I welcome Trek Xl. History shows that after one bad Star Trek. Four good ones follow. Bring it on. I'll be there. You want a story line? How about Star Trek meets Battlestar Galactica and the Cylons.

Whatever you do don't include the Voyager crew, that was the worst attempt at breathing new life into the Star Trek legacy.
Please, please bring the Deep Space Nine crew back. Who ever wrote and directed the episodes for DS9 was a genius.

How about a Voyager, DS9 mix with a good dose of Next Generation and a couple of original cast members thrown in? They have a real potential storyline with the Romulans since Spock was on Romulus the last time we saw him.

Mr.Frakes directing would be great. He knows the legacy ( or francise for the more business- oriented ) and really elevates the mood on a production set and that is always something that translates to the screen. I think it is great news that Mr Abrams is opting to stay with producing. I have never heard of a creative producer also directing, exec producer ? sure. But to produce an d direct would hurt and slow any production. Just one of those jobs is hard enough, that's why there are so many assistants.
I have very high hopes for the premise. It is exactly the tmeframe I wanted to see portrayed and I am hoping will bridge the "gap" between the eras of Archer and Kirk. Here's a thought ....Spock's bethrothed : T'Pring , is the daughter of ........T'Pol !
I would like to see ST XI actually start with Admiral Forrest or Archer or T'Pol or .....Shran.

Well, at least they're still talking about a Trek movie, and I guess that's what really is important.
I'm still not exactly thrilled with the idea of a young Kirk and Spock movie or with another TOS prequel, though. Whatever happened to boldly going where no one has gone before? All we seem to do now is safely going where we've already been...

I believe I speak for all, if not most Trek fans....Nemesis was a disaster. It should have not been filmed. Yes. Jonathan Frakes would do a great job producing and directing the next Trek movie. I don't believe the box office would see a good turn out if the Voyager or DS9 cast was used in the next movie. TNG has the best cast a Trek series has even seen. Sure it would be nice to see Kirk and Spock back together again. So why not include those two in the next storyline. Time travel has it advantages for the Trek Franchise....let's see what Riker himself comes up with.....Good Luck Jonathan....Make us proud!

All outtakes and footage not used from previous movies with Scotty and Bones should be used tastefully to create the new movie so that these characters will appear. Special effects to weave a new motion picture. This could be used in dream se-
quences or aliens trying to seduce the remaining crew to think their commrads are still alive.
