Johnny Depp Joins INXS?
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Johnny Depp
No, Johnny Depp is not joining INXS on tour to totally rock out the 80's
freak-child inside all of us. Instead, rumors are now spreading that the producers of the upcoming biopic about
INXS front man Michael Hutchence are seeking out the Deppster to play
the part. Yeah, and who was it that thought the world still cared about INXS?
Not only are they after Depp, but these producers are looking to put together a "dream cast." Some of the names include Eric Bana, Sienna Miller, Naomi Watts, Eva Green, Hayden Christensen and Julie Walters. Say what? Not for nothing, but apart from you random INXS fans, would folks even be interested in this film? Heck, I'm sure if they can snag those names, anyone would line up for a ticket. Hmm. Maybe that's the point.
Tentatively titled Slide Away, the film will be helmed by long-time INXS music video director Michael Egan and will shoot primarily in Australia. Seeing as there was a reality show recently that searched for the new lead singer of INXS, maybe there's a huge fanbase out there that would run to see this one. Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh in thinking that there's no possible way the producers will land this cast. I don't know... what do you think?

A pretty big percentage of those people are Australian, right? Aren't INXS one of the biggest Australian bands ever? That might sway them, somewhat.

Say what you will, but INXS is still very listenable. When I first heard this news I instantly thought of Val Kilmer in The Doors flick... I am very intrigued and would probably watch it. The target market for this movie will of course be anyone who grey up in or before the 80s. Kids these days might not even know about INXS other than the fact they did a TV show to replace a band member for a band they knew nothing about.

I wonder if they'll do a film within a film and show the making of Dogs in Space. Wow, I haven't seen or even heard that film mentioned for years.

This sounds like pure hype. No mention of a script and isn't Johnny Depp, er, a little too old now to play a young Hutchence. But I also remember enjoying Dogs in Space and a DVD release, maybe on the back of a Hutchence biopic, would be good.

Uh, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that any time someone kills themself it just might make for an interesting story. This is especially true when the suicidee happens to be a fairly rich, (some would say) talented, chick-magnet named Michael Hutchence.
Regardless of cast, I think most people would at least be vaguely curious about this movie.

Hi as a huge INXS fan I found your comment that no one
cares about them very offensive. And if you (really) did not know the answer is YES there is a HUGE fan base and not just one but numerous ones. If you don't believe me try going to one of their sold out shows!!
I've personally have been to 2 and traveling to Canada next week to attend 4 concerts. Yes they were not in the top for awhile. After the tragic lost of their very charismatic lead singer Micheal but they are back and soaring to the top again. The new singer is awesome and their new album is great. Thank you

Johnny Depp is stacked up solid with jobs for the next two years or so as far as I can see, and it's been reported that because of this, he's had to let roles go that he would have liked to have taken (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for instance). What makes them think they can lift a finger and have him come running to do this one on short notice? When I read this little bit of news last week they were saying they were looking to go into pre-production about three months!
The other star names are probably in a similar position ..

I was recently told that the INXS concert that I wanted to go to had sold out in record time. If that isn't a fan base, I dont know what is!

FIST and foremost...Michael Hutchence did NOT COMMIT SUICIDE. Maybe it would be a good idea for YOU to see a biopic on Michael, that way you will be a bit educated on his life and what happened in the end.
As for the buzz..I think the film would kick ass. I think there are enough of us that were a big part of the 80's and another fan base that loves the new INXS.

Ohhh brother...go see the film if it happens. That way you'll know Michael didn't "kill himself", it was not a suicide...and you'll get a bit of an education on his life (doesn't sound like you have much of one right now).

I grew up way before the 80's but I love good, danceable music! And I loved INXS...very danceable! If I don't go see the movie, I'll buy the DVD because I love Johnny Depp, and collect his movies, but don't much opportunity to go to theaters.

I was in high school in the late 80's and INXS was a huge part of my music listening life!! The fan base is still there and always will be. Although the new CD is great (and J.D. is not too bad), in my eyes, Michael was INXS and was very hard to be replaced. As for the 'biopic', I do not know if I would be inclined to watch. Michael was already replaced with J.D. -- now leave well enough alone.

Well, Erik, there are many, many people who still care about Michael Hutchence and your comments are very presumptuous! I have been a huge fan of INXS since I was in high school and I have read a bit about what Michael was actually dealing with when he took his own life in 1997. The world should know the truth! Did you know his finacial advisor stole millions from Michael's family (particularly his now-orphaned daughter, Tiger)? Michael was not given a fitting tribute after his death. Perhaps a film would help him to have the recognition he deserves. By the way, he and Johnny Depp were actually very good friends.

Look, if you want to make a bio pic of a dead lead singer, make one about someone with actual talent, such as Kurt Cobain (DUH!!) or Layne Staley. Both of these guys had far more talent, and made more of a difference in music than some guy who hung himself because he couldn't deal with his own homosexuality. Just my opinion, but I'm not usually wrong on things like this!

Let's not forget some of the history:
Hutchence was a wild man and sex machine.
Hutchence had an affair and stole Bob Geldof's wife
Geldof and Hutchence did not like each other and went to war over this woman (and there were kid custody issues).
Many believe Hutchence did not committ suicide but that it was accidental and involved a certain strange sexual act.
I'd pay to see it!!!
