Sam Neill and Julian Glover Were Almost James Bond
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, James Bond
There is a long, interesting post over at TV
Guide's FlickChick, recapping the history of
the James Bond franchise. Who almost became Bond, who played Bond when, who turned down the role and why. I already
knew that Barry Nelson was the first person to play Bond (he played "Jimmy Bond," in a 1954 episode of
Climax) and that Timothy Dalton was asked to play Bond many years before he got the role in the late '80s, but
I didn't know that Patrick "Number Six" McGoohan turned
down the role, or that both Sam Neill and Julian Glover auditioned to play 007 before Dalton came into the picture.
Richard Johnson and Sid James almost became Bond too, but I've never heard of either of them.I was asked to play 007 too, back in the early '80s, when Moore was going to be replaced, but I had a biology paper due and had to turn them down.

The most horrifying possibility was a choice they were thinking about--a blonde Australian model named Finlay Light (this would be just before they settled on Timothy Dalton.) If you see a photo of Light, who looks like an auxiliary member of Duran Duran, the trained seal with a 007 medallion around its neck in the first Casino Royale suddenly doesn't seem so bad.

Don't be knocking Duran Duran. They did record arguably the best Bond theme song ever.
And for me, Brosnan is STILL Mr. Bond.

A View To A Kill..the best bond song?!?...absolutely not. It's putrid and popularized by MTV and a flashy video. Frankly, radio play only could not have saved that bit of rough candy. A stumble for Duran Duran, an otherwise fine group. Thank God for "Reflex." That particular Bond was not so hot either.

Roger Moore was the best Bond. He had humor.

What? There was a James Bond other than Sean Connery? I can't imagine. The others must have been imposters.

Woody Allen also played Bond in Casino Royale. Casino Royale was the only original Ian Fleming book that Alberto Broccoli did not have the film rights to. Casino Royale was really a spoof on the spy movie and the Bond character was portrayed by many actors in the film.

Still don't know why Adrian Paul who played in "the highlander" TV series was never considered. He even looks rather like a young Sean Connery (who as we all know is the only "real" James Bond).

Richard Johnson was a British actor who worked steadily throughout the 60s & 70s in such biggies as KHARTOUM (Laurence Olivier, Charlton Heston). He was marreid to Kim Novak for a while, whom he met while shooting THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF MOLL FLANDERS (a quickie sexploitation film meant to capitalize on the success of the sexy period romp TOM JONES. He was also Raquel Welch's leading caveman in her star-making phenom, ONE MILLION, B.C. The poster for that film hid Tim Robbin's tunnel in Shawshank Redemption. And he really really really looked a lot like Sean Connery. A lot. Really.

Adrian Paul would have been perfect. Sean Connery still is. I have never figured out how Moore or Brosnan got the part: Bond is supposed to be a passionate man of action, not a fey fop who probably got beat up at Oxford. Dalton? Merely adequate.
Why don't they make a Felix Leighter movie?

Sean Connery was the only actor to truly be a Bond. The way he looked at the Bond girls with he's eyes was pure sex. He was hot then and still is.
All the others except for Roger Moore, were boys.

An interesting note: the article on the potential 007's mentions that Connery exemplifies Bond like Basil Rathbone exemplifies Sherlock Holmes, even if they don't look exactly like the character as written. We recently saw a talk by Dashiell Hammett's grand-daughter, and Humphrey Bogard, who is the quintessential Sam Spade also bears no resemblance to the literary Spade, who was fashioned after dapper and lean-faced Hammett himself, looking "not unpleasantly like a blond Satan." Nothing like Bogie -- but Hammett approved of Bogie whole-heartedly in the part, and I think we would agree, the quintessential.
And for my vote: Sean C. will always have my heart, as Bond or as anyone!
