Today's Remake: Clash of the Titans
Filed under: Action, Deals, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Scripts, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels
Today we get an update on another remake of a
really, really old movie -- the original was made way back in 1981. Warner Brothers announced their plans to remake the
cult classic, Clash of the
Titans, in 2002, when writers were hired to re-do the film. But either that script didn't happen or it's been
discarded, because they've just signed relative newcomer Travis Beacham (he wrote a film that's in post-production, and
another that's been announced, but nothing has yet been released) to do the job. According to Beacham, his version of
the story will adhere to the same basic plot as the original, but in "darker" and "more realistic"
ways. More realistic?! Wouldn't that sort of ruin everything? People love Clash of the Titans because it's cheesy, and because the stop-motion effects, though great for the time, are so dated! Remaking it realistically totally misses the point -- who the hell wants to see the story told with fancy CGI and some good actor who's not Harry Hamlin?

i'm sorry, but i do.
i'm a huge fan of fantasy, and Troy made me cry, because they butchered the story, not because it was good. i won't go off on peter jackson is great blah blah blah, but the fact is, fantasy stories are popular for a reason, and telling the "true" story (king arthur?? keira's hot, and my wife claims that clive is too, but that story sucked) when we can make non-cheesy fantasy creatures (omigosh did you see the balrog?!) and bring the story to life on the big screen is many people's dream come true. if i want the cheesy version, i've got it on dvd, now i want a good one.
and speaking of needing a good story, maybe in 30 years, we can get someone to retell episodes 1-3 of star wars with good writing, and my childhood won't feel shattered anymore. a tangent, but i enjoyed it.

SACRILEGE! If they remake STAR WARS in any shape, form or fashion, the world as we know it will collapse! STAR WARS shaped the hearts of so many 40 something's; do we really want to run the risk of changing a series of films that so influenced a generation (of today's leaders!)??
STAR WARS influence is felt in more ways than the pictures on the screen! It wasn't the dialogue that made the fantasy - it was the story itself, the characters, the time and place - AND - it was the special effects (not quite so CGI back then!).
Cut the world a break and come up with some new stories and quit remaking someone else's!

I think that's why the comment was for Star Wars 1-3, not 4-6. Besides, Lucas has already "updated" them. We know how well that's turned out.

I guess it's a matter of perspective, but I don't consider a movie from 1981 to be "really, really old". To me, that would be better to describe a movie made around the time of D.W. Griffith. As far as a more realistic approach to "Clash of the Titans", will someone remind Warner Brothers that this is Greek mythology? I also find anything with Ray Harryhausen's special effects more fun to re-watch than CGI which has pretty much drained the "special" out of special effects.

Yow. Could you make me feel any older? Clash came out when I was a senior on high-school but your description makes it sound like it's from the silent era. As for the movie, I loved it but the special effects were the only thing interesting, the rest was a pretty tired rehash of Jason and the Argonauts.

Hamelin could play Zeus! Man, I can't believe that was Lawrence Olivier in the original!

I'd just like to clarify for the sake of my own dignity as a child of the 80s that the whole "really really long time ago" thing was a lame attempt at sarcasm on my part. My implication was that Hollywood seems to think anything made before about 2000 is ancient and needs to be perked up, not that we're all older than dirt. I swear.

My serious concern with this is multifold. 1) Why would Hollywood remake a movie that had already butchered & mish-moshed several fantastic Greek myths that could be transformed into films in their own rights? 2) Isn't the simple notion of remaking something Ray Harryhausen touched considered sacrilege? 3) How do you make a snake-haired woman that turns people to stone AND a giant sea monster "more realistic"? 4) WHY, gods, why does Hollywood insist on turning the more charming aspects of my childhood film-watching into ground chuck for the unimaginative, spoon-fed cinematic generation? That's my 2 cents for now.

. ok I'm all for making films inspired by mythology, but do they have to remake Clash of the Titans?. there is nothing wrong with the original one. I like the cheese aspect of it, and ray harryhuesen work was fine by me as a kid. this was his last film before he died. so to remake what he did would be an insulting mistake. technology today isn't that great. the star war series Sucks anyway especially Phantom menace and onward. and the reason why Lord of the Rings did so well for me, is because there was a ballance of Special FX location and real stuff too. It wasn't an entire CGI fiasco.
The reason why Troy Sucked because it just did. I thought the made for tv movie Hellen of Troy was better on NBC. also the Cinematic perspective was very little. to many close up shots of Ships and Fortresses. Sometimes using Full Screen to its full extent can be advantageous. I felt like the director failed in every aspect. so the movie sucked. My wife Swears up and down that Brad Pitt looks like he's wearing Lip Gloss throughout the whole movie.
King Arthur Was a terrible boring movie. it was closer to the film style of the Adventures of Hercules with kevin Sorbo. not even as good as Excalibur is or was.
So people leave Clash of the Titans alone. make another movie on Mythology and stop remaking things because its stupid. Just because Batman Begins was a success doesn't mean this one will be. They really had to work real hard on that one. however I don't think you will, with Clash of the Titans.

Make a realistic version of Clash of the Titans?
Isn't that like making a movie version of The Illiad and removing the gods. Man that would suck, oh, wait...
Saw Clash of the Titans again a couple of years ago on the big screen. Still kicks ass over what Hollywood produces today.
Not worried though 99.999999999999999999% of the movies they talk about making they never actually make. I wonder how long before Tarantino (Clash of the M*f*ing Titans, B*tch) and Whedon(Clash of the Angst Ridden Titans) get named as directors. No insult to Whedon intended.

Ray is alive and well as of May 2, 2006. In fact he was just in L.A. signing books and attending screenings of...Clash of the Titans.
