Mark Beall's Geek Beat: Crossover Action Desired
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Scripts, Distribution, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Columns

If you've been a follower of Marvel comics for any length of time you are quite aware of Marvel's love of storyline
crossovers. Sometimes this means a character or two showing up in someone else's book (like Wolverine, who seems to
appear in every Marvel title written these days) and sometimes it means a whole new book focusing on a crossover
team-up such as the current "Cable and Deadpool" series. Some crossovers are established firmly in the Marvel
world -- characters such as the Silver Surfer and Namor (for incredibly obvious reasons) are regularly
seen running through the pages of the World's Greatest Comic Magazine (that's the Fantastic Four, for the comic
illiterate among us). So my question is, how long until we get some crossover action in our comic book movies?
A problem with the crossover potential of Marvel comic films is the movie licensing rights to the characters which
have been granted to several different studios. The Incredible Hulk, for instance, is with Universal; X-Men and the Fantastic Four go with Fox; Spider-Man is famously tied to Sony (as is Ghost Rider, if memory serves); and The Punisher belongs to Lion's Gate. However, this does not spell
death to any potential cross-over action thanks to the large deal currently inked between Marvel and Paramount.
Paramount has quite a number of Marvel flicks in the works right now -- meaning a good collection of the Marvel
pantheon will all fall happily under the same umbrella.
Ignoring Paramount, we've only got a few titles owned by the same studio; the biggest obviously being Fox's* control of both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. These are two of the four heavy-hitters within the Marvelverse, and they've worked together plenty of times within the pages of Marvel comic books. Heck, there was even a recent crossover miniseries called X4 which was absolutely glorious. Charles Xavier and Reed Richards are old friends, and their teams have worked together on many occasions. The likelihood of a full-on X-Men/Fantastic Four team-up film is probably quite low; but with several confirmed and rumored spin-offs from the X-Men films there should be plenty of opportunities for a Fantastic guest appearance. Can anyone think of any strong candidates for such an occurrence? I'd love to see Beast consulting Reed (or vice versa) in the future, for one small example.
While we're discussing this, I should point out I don't believe Namor or the Silver Surfer are part of the stable now belonging to Paramount, which of course leaves the doors wide open for Fantastic Four crossover potential. Silver Surfer was last attached to Fox and there have been whispers of the Surfer getting his start in a Fantastic Four movie as the Herald, which is right and proper.
Sony controls Ghost Rider and Spider-Man, although they seem to be afraid of the Ghost Rider film already and the powerhouse of Spider-Man has plenty of other characters available to it, so I'd rate the possibility of a Ghost Rider/Spider-Man crossover at the bottom of the possibility scale.
Lionsgate likewise controls The Punisher and the upcoming Man-Thing. Crossover potential there sounds fun, but is also highly unlikely. Lionsgate would need a lot of convincing before they'd consider this union a money-maker, especially after the disappointing theatrical release of The Punisher (although its DVD sales were quite brisk).
Here's a weird one -- Universal has produced both the Incredible Hulk and Howard the Duck -- although the rights for Howard have probably long departed from Universal.
Now let's talk Paramount. Tops on the slate for the company are two flicks; Captain America and Iron Man. Thor and Ant Man projects are also in early stages of development, and even Hawkeye and Black Panther flicks have been announced. If that line-up doesn't just SCREAM Avengers at you, you've probably never been near a comic book. An Avengers' flick is also part of the Marvel-Paramount deal, so there's no doubt where this current line-up of films is headed. I don't know if bringing all the Avengers together into one film is technically considered a "crossover" since they all exist in the same comic title normally -- but nonetheless we get to see several comic book movies tied together.
Paramount also plans on producing Nick Fury and Dr. Strange films (among others), and either of these two characters could be easily dropped into somebody else's film; they both show up frequently and unexpectedly in all manner of Marvel titles.
And lets not forget that Marvel's pantheon of characters is practically unlimited. Yes, they've signed a big ole deal with Paramount, but the universe has an absurdly large list of superheroes. If the comic book movie craze dies down (a subject I hope to examine in a future Geek Beat) we may not even see all the titles we've heard announced make it to the silver screen; but if the market remains strong the possibilities are almost literally endless.
*It should be noted Fox also controls Daredevil and Elektra -- and did work some crossover action between these two characters, so the crossover idea is at least in somebody's mind over there.

It's a shame that Daredevil can't show up in a Spidey film but oh well. BY the way Man-Thing isn't upcoming. It was released as a sci-fi channel movie and direct to video. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290747/ Man-Thing was always a second rate Swamp Thing anyway.

This is all owed to the fact that Marvel is not owned by a single studio - for better or worse - like DC Comics is.
Daredevil would have worked so much better had he been incorporated into a team-up movie with Spider-Man where they took on the Kingpin together. But alas, because of selling the rights to different studios, it did not happen.
Then again, the *Daredevil* film would have been so much better had they just simply adapted the "Born Again" storyline (excising Thor and Captain America from it) instead of having MSJ write an inferior screenplay and story. It just wasn't compelling enough.
I am still angry over the casting of MCD as the Kingpin. Why? Well, because the producers refused to allow Cuba Gooding Jr. to audition for the "white" role of Daredevil but felt it fine enough to cast a black actor as a "white" villain. They then told the fanbase that the Kingpin wouldn't become the "Blingpin" but then they went on to disrespect MCD by cuing up the rap music track in his first onscreen scene.
I still feel it would have been much better to have cast the wrestler Big Show as the Kingpin, draped him in the shadows for most of his scenes (like Brando in *Apocalypse Now*), and then dubbed his voice and used CGI to make everything look natural. The fight scene would have been much more incredible considering Big Show could pick up Ben Affleck over his head and physically throw him across the room unassisted versus the wire assist that MCD had in the film.
Granted, the director's cut was so much better than the studio edition. What a travesty. But still not as good as "Born Again".

I cringe whenever someone recommends a wrestler for a character in a movie. I don't think I need to explain myself.

You mention that Ghost Rider, and Spider-man teaming up is unlikely, although it has been done in the comics. I personally thought it was a well done crossover and feel it would make an amazing film.

I love comics and always have, but the truth is that most movies based on comic characters have been dreadful, with only a very few exceptions. Hollywood is apparently going to beat the superhero/comic book angle into the ground, seeing as how they have apparently run out of ideas or are too lazy to come up with new or interesting ideas.
Rather than continue to make mediocre-to-bad films about well-worn, tired out characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four (and that movie was NOT good), or the Avengers, I'd like to see a movie made of some of the more offbeat comics, like Love and Rockets (which cries out for movie adaptation) or Lloyd Llewellyn.

I feel a crossover would not work out at any point b/c of the all-star cast that they would line-up. Remember the movie industry wants to make good movies but on budgets. But, Another great idea would be if marvel did a film on the Age of Apocalypse series. They would have tons of marvel characters to work with and an awesome story. Characters that usually have a corny bubble-gum super-hero feel to them would be dark characters. Other than that I would hate if the "turning comic books into movies" craze is over.

I agree. I think Blade should be brought back to do a crossover film with Spider-Man. Then they could also incorporate Morbius as the villian. Wesley Snipes did such a great job acting the part of Blade.

Personally I would enjoy the many crossover ideas, because some of the movies that only had one character, such as Elektra and the Incredible Hulk... they kinda sucked. Perhaps with the help of another Hero(or Heroine) would have brought them to mediocre at best. That would be ok as long as they stop making video games into movies. (Thats beside the point I just wanted to add it in there)
But until they beat ever single comic book character with any renown at all until they reach the likes of "Captian Underpants" or "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac", the wave of horrible, with a few one or two that are good, and other who exceed expectations, comic book movies, will not end.

What would be awesome is if they would take Captain America and Sgt York and meld them together into one superhero and bring them out of the 40's and 60's technocolor, place them in modern day gulf wear type situation fighting the Al-'kida' in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as on the home front. Kind of a Sgt York and Captain America brought to the present but in mass production such as an entire brigade of Captina America clad uniforms (this has stormtrooper written all over it, I know, I know) doing things that they do in "ALIAS" and "The Unit".

If they could release a 2nd Punisher flick where Thomas Jane is more aggressive, rather than being an emotionless spy-type (GRRRRR!), then for the 3rd installment they could definitely do a crossover where Daredevil and the Punisher butt heads. This was done in the comic books quite well. Punisher thinks the bad guys must die, Daredevil wants them to go through the courts and justice (being a lawyer). That's a perfect situation. Perhaps at the end they could work together and defeat the baddies. I don't know, but being a Punisher fan, Thomas Jane is NOT getting the job done. The Punisher is aggressive and angry, and doesn't go around planting fire hydrants to toy with peoples minds - he kicks in the door and takes names.

Spidy and Fantastic 4 is needed since Reed helps Spidy figure out the black costume is an alien symbiote w/weakness to heat and sound. Venom has to be Spider-man #4 in 2009.
OR Blade/Spidy could help build the entire Morbius story using the Midnight Sons.

I think that they should do the return of Apocalypse, with Every superhero movie character in it, and throughout the movie show the mini crossovers and character developement (Spidy-Blade, X-Men-F4, Daredevil-Punisher, whatever) and focus on the character developement and tie it all together in the end for a wicked all out brawl against Apocalypse (with many wicked fights along the way!). I think that this would be the way to go...Thoughts?

Elliott,
So a former bouncer is more credible an actor than a 7'2" wrestler? I purposefully stated that I would have done it with Big Show being concealed by shadows ala Brando in *Apocalypse Now* so he wouldn't have to "act" so much. I suggested dubbing the voice and using CGI to perfect the dub for the very few scenes where the camera would be facing the Kingpin's face dead-on. It would have worked whether you disagree or not. And it would have made for a much more epic fight between Daredevil and the Kingpin given the Big Show's physical stature.
But hey, maybe you like the theatrical cut of *Daredevil*. Not everyone has taste, after all.
