Box Office Report: Insert Mission: Impossible Joke Here
Filed under: Action, Drama, Horror, Thrillers, Paramount, Celebrities and Controversy, Box Office, Family Films, Newsstand, Tom Cruise, Remakes and Sequels
Though Mission: Impossible III easily topped the weekend box office with $48 million from over 4000 screens -- the fourth-widest launch ever -- the film's opening is far short of both what was expected (in the $60 million range) and what the first two installments in the series made in their debuts. Whatever the reason for the relatively low open (Are people turned off by Tom Cruise? Nikki Finke is not alone in thinking so.), studios must be a little nervous about this kind of result for the summer's first "blockbuster," particularly given that the movie was fairly well reviewed.Though it probably won't make the people at Paramount feel any better, the weekend's two other debuts were much, much worse, particularly that of Hoot. Despite opening on over 3000 screens, the Carl Hiaasen adaptation made only $3.4 million with just over $1000/screen -- barely enough to get it into the top 10 (it ended up tied for ninth with Akeelah and the Bee). An American Haunting, meanwhile, finished third with $6.4 million. Holding onto the second slot was RV, which made $11.1 million in its second week of release. Stick it and United 93 rounded out the top five, pulling in $5.5 million and $5.2 million, respectively; in its two weeks of release, United 93 is already in the black with about $20 million against a $15 million budget. The full top 10 is after the jump.
1. Mission: Impossible III, $48 million
2. RV, $11.1 million
3. An American Haunting, $6.4 million
4. Stick It, $5.5 million
5. United 93, $5.2 million
6. Ice Age: The Meltdown, $4 million
7. Silent Hill, $3.9 million
8. Scary Movie 4, $3.8 million
9. (tie) Akeelah and the Bee, $3.4 million
9. (tie) Hoot, $3.4 million

Poor Tom must be devistated his opening was not as good as predicted. I hope this movie bombs just on principle and teaches him some humble pie serving that you cant act like an Id**t and expect people to respect you in the morning or shell out hard earned money.

I went and saw this last night. It was not a sell out crowd. My brother and Dad had gone the day before and I went opening weekend just based on their appraisal that "this was way better than the other two, especially II" After leaving the theatre both my wife and I agreed that it was a spectacular movie that is everything that a summer blockbuster should be. It really was fun sitting and watching one of the few worthwhile movies to come out of hollywood in a long time. That being said, the hardest part of sitting there was watching Tom Cruise who annoys me every time I see him. I think that if it had been someone else playing Ethan Hunt this could have had a $100m opening. The only hope for it is that other people go through an experience like me, hearing that it is good through word of mouth, decide to tolerate tom cruise for two hours.

i'm not sure tom will learn a lesson here. his movie still made more than the rest of the top ten combined. what was the last movie to make 48 mil on opening weekend? it's not like this was an average opening, just average for him. either way, i didn't go, i probably will, but i don't go see "blockbusters" opening weekends. too busy.

Its true it topped the box office this week, but man, there was nothing but crap playing. Hoot looked like a made for tv movie. American haunting had almost no advertising in my area, & Despite liking Robin Williams Rv looked stupid. The only movie I would have gone and seen was M.I. III but didn't on princepal.

I used to like Tom Cruise but now he makes me ill. After watching his antics last year I will never go see another movie with him in it. By the way, I have some gay friends who swear to me that Tom's as gay as a picnic baskit, and the way he acted last year I believe it.
