Abrams Puts the Nix on Alias Movie Rumors
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
It happens every time a successful show ends a television run (by cancellation or just of natural causes), especially a popular sci-fi or fantasy series. The inevitable "there is going to be a movie sequel" rumor pops up and spreads like wildfire. Alias, of course, has been no exception. Practically as soon as the popular series finale was announced rumors of a film began circulating. Creator J.J. Abrams said the show already has a fantastic ending (in a two-hour episode) and he's perfectly happy with the way the show is going out. When asked about a movie, he replied by saying "I think at the moment, right now Alias is sort of going to rest in just the right way, so I think that it's the right way for it to go out."Joss Whedon doomed all television series creators for all time after Firefly became a motion picture. The successful petitioning of his crazy, devoted fans brought a movie sequel to a finished TV franchise, and the fans perceive themselves -- rightfully so -- as having a big part in making that happen. This means for the next several decades every TV director will have to answer a ton of movie sequel questions from industry writers and fans alike.

Having just seen Mission Impossible 3 all I have to say is that Alias has made it to the big screen. Sure the lead is now a male, but it's Alias in just about every way. Starting the episode at the end, check. Latex masks, check. Dead but not really dead, check. Quirky technology guy, check. Jumping off building with parachutes and ropes, check. Establish 'real life' with leading character, check. Discussing personal life during mission, check. All that's really missing is Rambaldi.

Andrew,
You are so right!
I was waiting for them to mention Rambaldi at the Vatican or for Irini to get the contact in Shanghi.

Sounds like that writer wasn't a big fan of Firefly. It's not really a fair comparison... Alias has had time to develop over five years. Firefly was canceled before the first season even aired all of its episodes. I would call Alias a "finished TV franchise," but Firefly was far from "finished." Bah.
My sister sent me a link to this article, telling me to check out the first comment about the Alias - MI3 comparison. I said the exact same thing to her and to those I went to see the film with. Watching MI3 was like watching an episode of Alias with a different rogue CIA branch. Well, except that Weis was there.
