Mmm ... Thieving Grandmas

Doris Payne rules. She's 75, and has spent the last 50-odd years (at least until she ended up in the pokey) stealing jewelry in broad daylight, confusing and tricking sales people with her grace and charm. One of the detectives who worked her case even likened her to a female Cary Grant: "She has," he said "the style." Happily -- because we all clearly need to have more contact with Ms. Payne -- Variety reported this morning that a movie about her life is now in the works. The untitled film will be the second project from J2 Pictures, a company founded by Malcolm in the Middle star Justin Berfield. Berfield will co-write the script with partner Jason Felts and Eunetta Boone, a TV-writer (who is clearly pretty cool herself -- she got her start on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) who brought the idea to J2 after visiting Payne in prison; the company just recently purchased Payne's life rights.

A truly fasinating story of a truly fasinating, suave lady. It was a shame she got caught.

You kill you get a movie deal, you fight you get a movie deal, and now you steal and get a movie deal. What is wrong with this world? I am an investigator and have arrested many, many thieves, on a daily basis, I would never consider offering any of them a movie deal. Do people realize that one reason prices go up in the retail industry is because people steal from them? Wow, this really upsets me. I will not be viewing this movie, if it is ever released.

Only in America do we glorify criminals including the illegal aliens. Break the law and get rewarded is what we say.

She gets what she deserves...to be in jail! But she does not deserve a movie! Nor does she deserve to profit from her crimes. She is going to be rewarded by money for the crimes she has committed. It is wrong! I know what it feels like to have something stolen. My diamond wedding ring was stolen. I still have false hope maybe someday it will be returned. Regardless of if was stolen from a store or from a person it is still wrong. She needs a bible... Tho Shall Not Steal!

Why should we continue to glorify the wrong and ignore the right? I aggree we have it all backwards. How do we tell our children not to do something when they go to the movies and its a star doing the same thing? Shame on us!

I must say I am appalled...so many of us who are grandparents raising grandchildren out here struggle daily just to feed the kids. I never would have considered being dishonest...or using a skill such as charm {?} to bamboozle, commit a crime or expect to be compared to Cary Grant, even if I did do it to save our collective rear-ends.
I am sitting here this very minute trying to find funds to send my grandson, who is our ward, to college. We are underfunded and need help, too...maybe she has some stashed she can send my way.
What is wrong with Hollywood? Their politcal agenda movies stink, they are trying to sway the world with their kinky, should be kept behind closed doors sexual predilectins and now they are going to create a hero out of a bald faced thief, no matter her age!
She is not a hero, not charming, not someone who should be used to set an agenda. She is a slap in the face of the real life granny's out there struggling honestly to keep our headsa bove water. I don't like the system any more than any one else, but she was obviously 25 years old when she started it and that says a whole lot more than the story will ever portray sympathetically...she'sa thief, plain and simple!
I just want to lay down and cry for those easily swayed individuals who read it and are encouraged to give it the old college try, too.

Oh, puhLEEEEze....are all movies made about people who only do what's "right"? I don't think so. Where would we be in the world without stories of all sides of life? There are two kinds of people in the world....those you love, and those you don't understand. Understanding leads to compassion. So, let's understand where this lady was coming from, and try a little compassion. We all have our dark side. Without the darkness, there would be no need for light. Shadows lend definition and character to our lives. Pure white light could be pretty boring.

Only us Americans would think of one thing to judge people on. We all forget there is more to a story than just one issue. There is always something leading up to what happens even if it's bad or good.

I can't WAIT to see this movie.
I want to see where she's coming from;why she did it;HOW she did it etc...
Visiting nuns and enjoying their company will not make me become one. My children and I will not become theives, but we will, maybe, understand what makes a simple woman a thief. If her innocent, and embarrassed grandchildren have some extras from granny's royalties, so what.
How interesting!

Jeez! Somebody ought to write a book about what is going on in America, and will continue to go on, in this country. Oh, I'm doing that already, as we speak. Tentative title, "America Unhinged."

I'm sure anyone with half a brain is insulted with the
glorification of Ms. Payne's escapades.
Maybe we should do a movie about Ken Lay's life...or
how about a film about Jeffrey Dommer?
The only way we can fight back is to NOT patronize
these films and send a message to the imbeciles who
try to make a buck from the victims.
It appears our country's "moral compass" is facing due south.

Only in America, I work my butt off 6 days a week just to pay my bills and feed my children, I taught my children not to steal that it was wrong, makes me wonder now. I should have become a thief and had a movie made about it than I wouldn't be living pay check to pay check. My bill's would be paid on time and I would have been able to help my daughter through collage. Instead I took a job boy was I bum or what. Some day I'll get my bill's caught up, maybe I'll take up stealing and someone will make a movie out of it, Disable person who works six days a week takes up second job stealing to help make ends meet, to long of a title I know but they will think of some shorter I 'm sure

This is a sad, sad, story how she lived her life.
Considering her age, I can imagine only how difficult
it was for her as a child and young adult, but others
seemed to have made it without doing what she did.
People do struggle to make a living, put up with hardships and do the best they can unlike her.
To end up in prison and selling her life rights.
I don't think anyone in prison should make a movie,
sell a story or profit from something wrong.
I agree it is bad for children.

Everyone wants to blast this old lady but yet they don't see the amusement in the fact that everyone tries to beat the system. Even the honest people of the world at least have thought about it in one fashion or another.Hey I would rather see this grand theft ma,get over on the system than the good ol' boys from Enron or the fat cats in Washington with their hand in the pockets of the tax payer! Come on, what ever will granny do out of jail! No good health care and a lousy generation of misguided people who don't care squat what happens to the elderly. You people need to lighten up. I say, give her job teaching law enforcement how to spot people like her. Her debt to society will be paid!!!!!!!

Yes, she needs a Bible. But in it she will read about thieves, murderers, promoters of evil, and everything else, including the good and just. She'll also read about what happens to people who commit such acts, as well as those people who judge others about sin. The Bible says be angry about sin, but don't do so yourself. If you're really upset about a movie being made about the woman, pray for her and the producers, and protest peacefully whatever way you choose. But don't let it make you sin as well, in your heart, mind or body.
