Da Vinci Code Banned
Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, Exhibition, Politics
Based on the latest reports from the Middle East, it appears that no one in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt will legally be able to see The Da Vinci Code when it explodes all over the world this weekend. The censorship, however, has nothing to do with the conservative, Islamic values that those of us in the West tend to associated with that region of the world. Instead, the opposition has come from Christians who, like many Americans and Europeans who share their faith, are troubled by the film's suggestion that Jesus was married and fathered a child (among other things) -- the difference there is that banning is an option, and it's being exercised. In other parts of the Middle East, though, the film has either been approved for release (albeit after several examinations), or is still being reviewed. It will be exhibited in its original form in the United Arab Emirates, while audiences in Bahrain, Oman and Qatar are awaiting the findings of censorship boards (who better hurry the hell up with that decision, if they want to ride the joyous Da Vinci Code train with the rest of us suckers).

Who cares what Syria or Jordan do? If they don't want to watch, don't watch, do you think America cares? NOT!

LMAO! EXACTLY! To HELL with all of them! They parade around with signs saying "To HELL with FREEDOM!", so we should pull all our troops and let them have NO freedom at all and all be slaughtered senselessly by the thousands! Who gives a damn whether they prefer to sensor it or not. By all means, go ahead! Their ignorance is what keeps them slaughtered and will continue to. I used to be in favor of their freedom as I truly believe all deserve to live from of that kind of horror in life, but hell, they welcome it! Like they say, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink...so let them die in their own ignorance and let the rest of this world move on without having to bother with it!

The ban on this movie (whether it's in the U.S. or not) is stupid. If people can not keep an open mind about their religion and accept different views about it, then they have no right to claim that religion. Religion is not about being right or wrong. It's about faith.

I believe everyone should have an open mind to religion. After all, religion is just a belief and not a fact. Closing yourself from knowledge is never the right option. This proves why some of those countries are behind in everything. Knowledge is power. I think it is rather embarressing that some countries are banning this movie. I think this is temporarily and wont last long. Hopefully there will be some international laws allowing all media and freedom of speech in every part of the world soon.

This is hilarious becuase now they look at religion politically. I thought religion is between oneself and God (or watever)???? I agree with oleg. This is indeed embarressing. How can you decide on something like that for a whole country. I think they are just scared of the truth and don't care about it. People like that are annoying!!! Considering all those terrorists from down there. If they are fighting for truth then why run and hide? I think they are doing this out of panic and not considering anything in the long run cuz the people would still want to watch it in their lifetime (if its this big of a deal).

Why in Islamic countires are we censoring a movie that purportedly disparages fundamental Christian beliefs? Seems like this would be Zar'Quari's favorite movie. I say they should market the hell out of the movie to all militant insurgents. If the reviews to date are accurate, then when they go to see the movie, we can get rid of all the insurgents by boring them to death. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Religion is just a belief and not a fact"...
But anyways, I do agree that it's embarassing that this kind of censorship still exists. It is a work of fiction, and I think a lot of conservative christians are afraid of it because it will cause people to ASK QUESTIONS about their religion. All these Churches in my area (Iowa) are holding lectures and debates against this movie. I believe this sort of response to a work of fiction shows how insecure people are with their own religion.
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" displayed Hindu-Indians as people who eat "chilled monkey brains" and practice voodoo... you don't see me getting all offended because my religion and country were inaccurately portrayed.

Whoa uhh some crazy people here, calm down guys. I heard that the films were banned because Jesus is a muslim prophet (honest, go look it up and don't shoot the messenger) and this demeans him. something like that anyways.
And Tush, well yeah kinda but they were depicted as some crazy cult type thing. So perhaps stereotyping and demeaning your country, but perhaps not your religion.

Just a slight correction. Here in the Emirates, the film is being screened from the 31st of May, supposedly, and one scene containing nudity has been censored. It standard practice to cut nudity here, they even cut Matt Damon's animated posterior in Titan A.E. (although a few bits of the mass grave in V for Vendetta made it through, as did, surprisingly, the lesbian kiss).

i was dissapointed not to be able and go watch the film at theatres here in jordan. but trust me, within a week, dvd copies are going to be running all over town. The churches here are the ones who have asked the goverment to ban the film. The distributors and the theatres will have to give in to the street sellers and the bootleg DVD shops this time.

This movie was banned in the Middle East, not just because Jesus IS in fact a Muslim prophet, his purity and holiness is the symbol or Christianity. And as we know even over here, the concept of his marital and paternal exposure is as widely a controversial topic there as it is here. However in the Middle East, you are dealing with 1) a respect and validity in religious beliefs (especially Christianity) 2) a censorship for the freedoms we take for granted here.
In countries where religion (both Christianity and Islam) is as valued and respected as it is (unlike our Atheist/Agnostic USA), they chose to ban the film as sacrilegious. Any depiction of Christ as a father and husband is sacrilegious, just as any depiction of the image of Muhammed, hence the uproar about the Muhammed cartoons.
It's a different culture; it's a stronger respect for religion, its censured public. Respect that as a difference, be mournful of the lack of religion in our country and be grateful for the freedoms we have over here, rather than critical of what they don't have.

The Davinci code should be viewed as strickly fiction. There is very little element of truth in the Da Vinci code. Christianity has been attacked and will be until the end of time as we know it on earth. It's sort of a mockery of Jesus Christ, but Jesus said the world will hate us because of Him. Hating us of course refering to Christians. If I had the time and space to write, I believe I could very easily show where all points of Da Vinci are false and not truthful as history shows. The Bible is fact not just a belief as two writers suggested.

I think people forgot that Ron Howard AND Dan Brown said the story is HISTORICAL FICTION. SENSATIONALISM!!! Get a grip, people! It's just a story!!!!!! I am a strong Christian myself, and went to see the movie because I read the book (which is 10 times better). Even if there was some truth to the story, I can honestly tell you that'd be a wonderful thing. If there were revelations then, why can't there be any now? That shouldn't lessen our faith any less. It's thought provoking, and I personally thought it was a beautiful historical fiction. Just my opinion and by the way, the movie was awesome!!

The movie is a big deal! If Jesus was married it makes the bible a lie!!!! This is all part of the deception...endtime...Jesus is about to return. This is all part of twisted lies and half truths that are spoken of in the bible. Beware of what you see, read and hear... I personally, fear God and love him dearly.... I would not watch this movie because it is offensive to God.

By reading some of these coments (Oleg & Beth) I realize why the catholic church is concerned about the movie. It is the fact that some people are
asking us catholics to keep an open mind about the possibilities that the things in the movie are true.
As a catholic I ask you to remember that this movie is fiction not fact. Unlike my faith.

How can you show proof the bible is real? It was documented my man, which is perfectly capable of lying. MAN decided which books to put in it. Historians found an atleast 1700 year old tablet recently where Jesus told Judas to betray him so he could exit the human body. But that isnt what the bible says. I believe in God, but man has murdered him. Religion should be personal. Back to the orginal issue. I believe countries in the middle east should be made to watch it. They should be locked in a room with it on the screen so they can see there are many different views of religion then theirs which is "the only one."
