Da Vinci Code Offends Albino Community
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Casting, Sony
Will it never end? It seems that The Da Vinci Code cannot not offend everyone on the planet; this time, it's the albino community that is angry with the movie for depicting albinos as evil villians. Michael McGowan, the head of the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, had asked the movie's production people not to bleach Silas the albino monk's hair or make his eyes red, but to no avail. Again, I'm no fan of the book and found the albino-monk-assassin scenes most laughable and fairly annoying. More amusing to me is this profile of Victor Varnado, an actor-comedian who actually auditioned for the part of Silas, but lost out to Paul Bettany. According to Varnado, "I think that albinos should have all [albino] roles . . . Painting a guy to look like an albino is like the blackface of albinism!" Hmm, the blackface of albinism. I'm still thinking about that one. Apparently Varnado just wasn't physically intimidating enough to play Silas.

I have to say that Da Vinci Code seriously offended me for its portrayal of middle aged, slightly overweight, receeding forhead bearing white males.
Where do I complain about that and who the hell cares?
So he doesn't believe in acting then, or the power of the movies? Why wasn't Langdon played by a real professor? Teabing by an actual cripple? The police by real police? Wait a minute, why didn't they really shoot the Grand Master of the Priory de Sion for the opening scene?
Dear me. If the film had cast him the rest of the community would be shouting about how albino's were typecast and didn't get a break.
Quick, look the bandwagon's rushing into town, let's leap on it.

Wow, thanks for the post. Will this never end? I think I've heard just about everything now. Is there a group left that The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown, Ron Howard, or Sony Pictures hasn't offended or wronged? It's entertainment, people! Get over yourselves!

I found the book boring and tedious. Had to abandon it half-way through. Therefore I shall not waste more of time seeing the film.

FYI, they made the actor's eyes blue for the movie. Pretty much accurate...the red eye thing isn't exactly the most common form of albinism in humans. I have a sneaking suspicion that the author had a very pale person in mind when he wrote the book, but I could be wrong.

As someone, somewhere has pointed out, one of Brown's many gaffes was suggesting that an albino would make a great super-killer.
First of all, albinism typically is characterized by poor eyesight, meaning ole' Silas wouldn't make much of a sneaky night-time attack guy.
And, secondly, albinos generally stand out in a crowd -- that would kind of make it difficult for Silas to go undetected, wouldn't it?
Who did this guy's research -- the local pre-school class?

Oh, wow... You people are seriously over sensitive, eh? His eyes were blue, people, not red. And it doesn't portray that all albinos are evil people. As said before, this is entertainment. People go to see this movie because they want to be entertained. It's not like anybody actually takes any of this truly seriously...

Well well well...here we are at the height of the information age...with knowledge about anything known available at our fingertips...but human beings decide that for a few weeks on this precious home of ours we should talk about the real ramifications on society by a novel...WE are the problem!

You know what, GET OVER YOURSELVES! Jeez what next? It's FICTION, that means the facts are not true there are no facts, just ideas and filler because a couple ideas sucked and they needed to put something in to make people not notice that it was poorly based. Don't get offended by a MOVIE BASED ON A BOOK NOT BASED ON FACT. IT IS NOT AGAINST YOU. You just have an ego the size of the sun and can't get that the world revolves around the sun, not you and your ego. So just because a piece of the movie and book resembles your appearence it is not against you nor is it about you. Just shut up and enjoy the film, laugh about it later.

Can we ALL remember that this IS just a movie? Who cares? Do we have to base movies off facts? So what about X MEN? Or Over the Hedge? I'm pretty sure animals don't speak english. I read that somewhere...if you want facts watch the discovery channel, it's what it's there for. But movies are usually for entertainment value, mostly fiction, at least that's what I was told. I don't know I could be wrong...

Oh, for God's sake! Ooops! Can I refer to "God" without offending anyone? Get a grip. If Albino persons feel that they've been stereotyped in this movie and want to complain about it, they need to get in line behind the big black guy (thug/killer), the Hispanic guy (non-English speaking border hopper), the stocky Italian guy (Mafia boss), the young, bald white guy (skinhead), baggy-clothed, hair in the face teenager (punk kid)...oh, Ok.. You get my point and I haven't even gone into the female stereotypes or the ones about the disabled.

i personally thought the book was great. and everyone really needs to chill about the whole evil albino thing. i dont go get mad if theres a movie/ book about a crazy killing white girl. your thoughts are respected and listened to. if you dont like the book then dont see the movie. if everyone complained about one book or movie that they thought was against them or what they believe we wouldnt have anything to watch or read. in conclusion i say grow up.
