Shocking: Angels and Demons Movie (Sort of) Announced
Filed under: Drama, Deals, Mystery & Suspense, Sony, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels
Last night while writing up the weekend box office report and detailing The Da Vinci Code's boffo open, I considered adding a clever little "Get ready for Angels and Demons, kids!" ending to the whole thing, but decided not to because I wasn't sure the book was actually a prequel (not to mention that I try to limit my pretending to be clever to once/post). But if only I had know -- it is, apparently, a prequel, and Sony's announcement of their vague hopes to turn it into a movie as fast as humanly possible was actually made just this morning. Because, in Hollywood, there is no such thing as dignity where money is involved.Though the report of Sony's plans is not exactly something you'd take to the bank -- a studio exec is quoted as saying nothing more than "We are very interested in filming Angels and Demons. We hope that the relationship with Dan Brown will be a long one. That could be the next project." -- you can be sure that the rights fees for this one are going to be roughly equal to the GNP of several small nations.
For the six of you unfamiliar with Angels and Demons, it was Brown's third novel, features Robert Langdon's (now Tom Hanks to millions of cinema-goers) first appearance, and was described by Publishers Weekly as a "well-plotted if over-the-top thriller ... crammed with Vatican intrigue and high-tech drama." Hmm. It's a bit like The Da Vinci Code, then? I smell money!

Edit: According to Nikki Finke, Sony bought the rights to the character Robert Langdon, which gets them not only Angels and Demons, but also the sequel on which Brown is currently hard at work. Eeeeeexcellent.

I'm not sure if it works for or against me, but I've read both novels and while neither is exceptionally well written, Angels & Demons is far more entertaining, but certainly less controversial and thus less popular. It's an obvious move to call the announcement as just another dogpile at that ungodly mountain of cash, but to its credit, the book as a whole has a vastly more cinematic story than the Da Vinci Code, which just never had 'good movie' in its cards to begin with. Even Ron Howard would have a tough time making Angels & Demons as boring as he did The Da Vinci Code.
Eh, maybe he wouldn't.

Yeah Peter, and YOU'RE so brilliant at writing.
Puhleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!
Not well written? You go and dig through all that information and make sure to put in all those references and footnotes while you write YOUR brilliant thriller novel thing, OK?
Man, you people are so fucking full of it.

don't you just hate when people write about things they couldn't be bothered seeing?
a&d is not a prequel. it's the first novel about langdon. things happen before the 'code', and it was written before it.

Yeah, HHH, The Da Vinci Code is not exceptionally well written. I'll give Dan Brown all the credit he deserves for being able to mangle a rather cohesive story out of all of his 'research', but that doesn't mean the actual writing is inspired.
Someone can go ahead and correct me, especially since I don't have my copy to go check, but I don't recall it having very many footnotes. He included some detailed refrences in the opening, but it's hardly meticulously documented nor balanced or argumentative. But maybe I'm just remembering it wrong. If you want a thriller which is slightly better written with an insane number of persistent footnotes, read Crichton's State of Fear. And at least in Crichton's case, he included research that went both for and against his claims.
Not to mention that the vast majority of Dan Brown's actual 'research' was lifted from other people's works.
And yah, I am pretty fucking brilliant.

I, personally, prefer Angels & Demons than The DaVinci Code. I read both novels and Angels & Demons just had way more intrigue to it, not to mention the scientific aspect of it, which is expectacular. Those who haven't read Angel & Demons most DEFINITELY SHOULD!

The movie was good but not great. I liked the book. I think Angles and Demons was a beter book, might make a stronger movie.
ps. I sure don't think the Catholic Church or any church needs to be so worried about it, that's for sure. fiction, folks.)

I couldn't put Angels & Demons down I enjoyed it so much. I'm not sure I understand why people think it isn't well written. It's entertaining...it's not supposed to become the new backbone of literature or anything. Dan Brown must be doing SOMETHING right. Out of his four books so far - Angels & Demons is my favorite.

"Fiction"...definition...An imaginary statement, story, etc. Both books were writen as fictional stories...I read both books...Angels & Demons was a great page turner, couldn't put the book down...not so with the Da Vinci Code...The Movie was very entertaining...Tom Hanks - Talented/No chemistry with his co-star, perhaps somewhat true of the Langdon character. And Now the rest of the Story...a money making sequel...that was obvious before the end of the movies when Sophie comtemplates walking water...DAH. Question: How can anyone be offended by a Fictional Story...just choose not to continue to read it. As for me, I'll enjoy seeing A & D on screen.

I thought Angels and Demons was much better than the DaVinci Code. Far more interesting plot, and so many twists. I said that I thought that A & D would have been a better movie. What is all the fuss with people protesing the movie or book. If your religion and faith are strong, this in no way should have created any problem for you.

I read the Holy Blood Holy Grail back in the 80's. That book is really was full of foot notes and Bibliography ! Dan Brown got it mostly right in the Da Vinci Code and made it into an interesting story. His writing was pretty good but not great. Angels & Demons was written better and the whole thing was more intrigueing. Last summer I took an Italian vacation, and it was interesting to visit St. Peter's in the Vatican and the Pantheon and look for some of the things mentioned in the book.
Next try reading Steve Berry's The Third Secret. It is also about the Vatican and their secrets and Berry is a better mystery writer than Dan Brown.

I to have both read the Novel and seen the movie I thought each was true to each other. What continues to amaze me is that we all feel our opinions are the only ones that count and if someone disagrees we go to attack mode. I guess it makes for good blogs but frankly it saddens me the intolerance we have for each other. Amazing how impassioned we get over a work of fiction to bad we don't get that impassioned over helping those around us that need it.

I read a story by Brown quite a while ago about some discovery of alien life in the Arctic. It wasn't primo (as demonstrated by my forgetting the title, but I read at least two or three novels a week :-) but it was very good. I recall the entire story - just not the farking title :-) See - it's old age and damage - I just turned 44 but at least I can still read (although I can't remeber what I did yesterday :-)
Peace Folks!

I thought that "The Code" was well written and a page turner. If "A&D" is better, I can't wait to start reading it. What's all the hubbub over the book and movie? "The Code" is pure fiction... ya know... just like "The Bible" is.

Dan Brown is an idiot who will rot in hell for his movie... as will Ron Howard and Tom Hanks. There are no historical facts from any source that even remotely support his blasphamous claims and he couldn't even get "DaVinci" right. The artist that painted the Last Supper was named "Leonardo" ... "DaVinci" referred to the area where he came from. Only idiots who are ignorant of the facts of history give "that movie" any validity. And anyone who disagrees with me can just go to hell ... as in reality, that is exactly what will happen to you.

I thought Angels & Demons was a much better story and I did read it and his other 2, before I read DaVinci Code. I hope they do make it into a movie-it would be very fast-paced and exciting, similar to the "Bourne Identity" et al movies. I couldn't put A&D down. I had wanted my mother to read it too because she was going to be in Rome in April but she said it made her heart pound! Now that's a good book!
