Superman Afraid of Pirates?

In what is no doubt the smartest move made yet by the Superman Returns team over at Warner Brothers, it has been determined the best release date for the film is a few days earlier than initially planned. Why exactly is a midweek start smart, you ask? Let me tell you. First, because it's a summer flick so it'll pull in decent opening numbers regardless. Whil the two weekdays may pull a few numbers away from opening weekend box office, it's not like the money isn't coming in, they just get it on a different day. Primarily, however, it is intelligent because it gives the film a few extra days alone with the silver screen in a summer that looks to be full of blockbusters. One film in particular has Superman a bit nervous -- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the sequel to another major blockbuster will be launching the very next weekend. By bumping the release up a few days Superman can stave off the pirates for a few extra days and hopefully rake in a little more box office cash.I don't know about you, but I'm certainly planning on personally helping out the box office numbers for both of these exciting films. I don't think the extra two days will make much difference to me -- I imagine I'll still see it on the weekend -- but nonetheless it seems like a smart plan.

I think it's wise of Warner Brothers to be afraid of Pirates. Despite the fact that Superman is Superman, I still expect Pirates to kick it's cape wearing posterior. Sure, people, including myself, want to see Superman and it will make loads of cash. However, people LOVE Pirates and will continue to do so with Dead Man's Chest. I thought it took a lot of brass for Superman to be running only a week in front of Pirates anyway. Nothing quite like losing your #1 mantle after one whole week.

Who wants to see some cheesy movie with Johny Depp and pirates running around on some studio lot with palm trees anyway? I havent seen the 1st one neither do I plan to see the 2nd one. Superman is the greatest hero of all the super heros without the baggage for instance the X-Men carry with them. Bryan Singer, I am hoping, will re-create the experiance of 1978 when Superman The Movie, was released and made everyone believe a man can fly. This film will no doubt, trample on Spiderman and all of these cheesy kiddish comic book characters that have been braught to the silver screen without substance. Superman has substance, grace, power and makes you feel awe at what he is capable of doing. He is the collective desire of what people (good people) on this planet would would to be and have. C'mon Superman! Stay at number 1 for 3 weeks and drown those Pirates!

Personally, I'll be going to see Pirates before Superman. The banter between Johnny Depp's character and the rest of the cast is so great, it's almost a throwback to the old Cary Grant movies. (That is, if Cary Grant here a pirate!)
Plus, Superman is PERFECT. He's invunerable, he has the looks, he has the amazing powers... That should be exciting. But it's not. Brandon Routh comes off as bland, kind of boring. Even as Superman. (Sorry, Routh fans.)
In the battle of archetypes, a steely-gazed perfect "man"(Kryptonian?) versus a witty, imperfect pirate, the character dynamics of Pirates appeal to me more.
I know Superman is SUPPOSED to be the all-American hero. But I'd only see the movie for Lex Luthor, and that's it.
