Zhang Ziyi Indentured to Weinsteins?

According to Zhang Ziyi, she's signed an old-school-style studio deal with The Weinstein Company to star in three films that they'll produce. In addition the rather horrifying-sounding remake of Seven Samurai (And people, The brilliance of The Magnificent Seven is in now way a vote in favor of this new remake -- if anything, it's another reason not to do it. I mean, that lightning is just NOT going to strike twice.) in which she's allegedly slated to share the screen with Donnie Yen and George Clooney, Zhang is also penciled-in to star in a period drama about Chinese folk heroine Mulan (yes, you've heard of her). The subject of the third film has not yet been revealed, but I'm still completely confused by this whole deal. Do contracts like this actually exist anymore, or is Zhang just lumping three different deals into a single conversation for some reason?

I'm always baffled when people say that the Magnificent Seven is brilliant. After I lent a copy of Seven Samurai to a friend who mentioned that I watch Magnificent Seven, which was really weak compared to the original. A Fistful of Dollars was the right way of doing a Kurosawa remake IMO. I don't have too much hope for this updated 2006 version plus I still don't understand why they don't get Japanese actors to play Japanese roles. (Yes I know she is very well known around the world, still doesn't excuse it.)

I'd just like to know why all her movies have to involve her getting abused sexually in one way or another...
i suppose the innocent face asks for it, but can we have her as a villain some day?

I think you mean, "NOT going to strike thrice." Last year saw Tsui Hark's Seven Swords, whicj wasn't horrible, but obviously nothing on the original.

This rumor is false, Ziyi is not committed to any future projects at the moment. Visit monkeypeaches.com for all the details behind how this rumor got started.

It's called striking while the iron is hot. I mean, let's face it guys, save for Jet Li and Jackie Chan, there aren't too many Asian (not Asian-American) actors with sure-fire studio deals.

I'm curious about this Hollywood trend of doing obviously Japanese roles with Chinese actors? Since the parts are generally in English, do they suppose that we just don't know the difference? Of course they've used English actors to portray Frenchmen, Chinese, and Blacks, I guess it doesn't make any difference.

To answer your original question, Martha, the Weinsteins do like to have multiple film contracts with certain people. Note, for example, the number of Miramax films starring Renee Zellweger.
