Jack Black is a Smackdown Superstar
Filed under: Comedy, Paramount, Movie Marketing
Just when I thought World Wrestling Entertainment couldn't be more of a joke, I learned through Fark.com that WWE's website features Jack Black -- actually his Nacho Libre character, Ignacio, aka "Nacho" -- in its roster of Smackdown Superstars. If you go to the site, Black can be found hidden among "real" wrestlers. Click on his photo, and there's all kinds of advertising for the new film from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess.
I know that WWE has become interested in Hollywood, but does Hollywood need to be interested in WWE? Maybe giving Black to Vince McMahon is payback for his giving the studios The Rock (I can't think of who got shafted, more)? Actually this is a pretty good cross-promotion for Paramount. As hard as it is for some of us to believe, millions of fans still love wresting and many of them will probably be drawn to this movie. I say WWE fans and Jack Black can have each other.

The rock is getting shafted? Did you suffer through Be Cool? Only two people came out of that debacle looking great: Andre 3000 and The Rock.
As for Black, excepting the crap that is School Rock, the guy's funny. His work in Orange County alone elevates him to great sidekick.

Sorry to say buddy, but while ol Vinnie Mac is makin his billions of dollars by by apealing to his millions and trillions of fans, you're stuck still writin your little articles behind your computer. We get it, it's fake, we already knew that for years. But we still watch every week to see some of the best athletes perform at the highest level and put their body on the line night in and night out just for the fans(and the millions of dollars they make). It's not so much of a joke anymore is it there Chrissy?

Mike - it is a joke. Yes they're making money. Yes they entertain some people. But really the WWE is little more than Nascar or Rush Limbaugh. It's JUST entertainment. Nothing more.

I know you all know it is fake. It is a soap opera. I think it is best appreciated as a joke, though. I hope you don't take it that seriously, as if they are truly "athletes". Also, don't call me Chrissy...grrr.

It's called World Wrestling ENTERTAINMENT, I don't think they are trying to be anything more BGDC. Why the hostility towards wrestling anyway? To compare it to Rush Limbaugh is just sick.

Yep, it's entertainment, yep it's a soap opera for guys. But what they do is not just act. Although they don't actually punch each other in the face, they actually throw themselves down the ring, jump from the 3rd rope onto each other and most of their injuries are real. These guys need to be in top shape in order to do what they do and that makes them athletes in my book. The definition of an athlete is as follow:
"An athlete is a person who has above average physical skills (strength, agility, and endurance) and is thus suitable for physical activities, in particular, contests. An ancient Greek word for "contest" was athlos, and those competing in the games were called athletes."
So, no matter whether you call wrestling a sport or not(it's sports-entertainment, as they say), I suppose that definition makes Wrestlers athletes. Got it Chrissy-boy? ;) just teasin'.

Ok I've read this web site for quite a while. I love films and wrestling. I've watched wrestling since I was three. Now I'm 25 and I have a love and appreciation for both. Both represent entertainment and escapist fantasy. The roots of "pro wrestling" are varied and quite intersting. I know that it is just a shadow of it's former self. It really can be compaired to Shakespere who wrote for the masses. Now my point, and I do have one, if Jack Black plays his character for a brief time and promotes the movie whats the harm. It should at least be more entertaining than the current story lines that WWE is putting on. If Black follows the tradition of masked Mexican Wrestlers and passes the mask on to another wrestler that would be deserving of the mantle of Nacho Libre, that would fall right in line with the history of wrestling and no one would think twice about it.
Really come on folks, when David Arquette was promoting the film Ready to Rumble, the former WCW let him win the Heavy weight championship belt. So would a actor with more comedic chops, such as Black portraying a wrestler be any worse. I say give it a chance and see. It could be fun.
Until the Rock tries to star in a Scorsese film, let it rest. He's mostly made mindless action picks till now. So let's not get our underwear in a bunch because he has "ruined our precious cinema".

David Arquette with the Heavy weight championship belt was probably the saddest moment of the WCW history, no wonder it's died.

Hey buddy. WWE isn't a joke. And Jack Black is a funny guy. I am a HUGE WWE fan, and respect anyone who is. I also respect the wrestlers (Who are REAL). So, why don't you just keep your nose out of the WWE, and do some research before you go telling everyone that WWE is a joke.
