News from Slackerwood: From Lolita to Labyrinth

It seems as though sex is permeating many of the film events in Austin this week, from movies that stretched the limits of the old Production Code (Lolita, Baby Doll) to contemporary movies that stretch our ideas about sex and film (Dear Pillow, Kissing on the Mouth). Labyrinth is also a hot choice for many David Bowie fans. You may want to buy a frosty beverage, with lots of ice, to accompany your viewing of these films. Or you could go see something tamer, but what's the fun in that?
- This week's addition to the AFS@Dobie collaboration is the 2005 Australian Western feature The Proposition, which opens today for a week-long run at the Dobie. Tibet: A Buddhist Trilogy and Clean are being held over for extended runs.
- This week's selection of Summer Movie Classics at the Paramount includes a saucy pairing of Lolita and Baby Doll on Sunday and Monday, a "Tales of Kipling" double-feature of Gunga Din and The Man Who Would Be King on Tuesday and Wednesday, and all three Indiana Jones movies next weekend.
- The documentary Gram Parsons: Fallen Angel premieres in Austin this week at Alamo Downtown, where it will play Monday through Wednesday. Monday night's screening includes live music and the documentary's director, Gandulf Henning, will be in attendance.
- The Austin Film Society series "De/Re:Constructing the Narrative: Global Experiments in Film" continues Tuesday night at Alamo Downtown with the 2000 Chinese film Suzhou River.
- Nueva Onda's monthly free summer movie night takes place Wednesday night at the South Austin restaurant. The short films include local filmmaker Scott Rice's The Adventures of Mad Matt, Vancouver Film School documentary Room for Rudeness, Brazilian drama The Color White, and Marjoun and the Flying Headscarf. (Full disclosure: I'm on the screening committee for this series, so I've seen all these shorts and enjoyed them very much.)
- The Texas Documentary Tour's selection for this month is In a Nutshell: A Portrait of Elizabeth Tashjian. The movie about artist Tashjian, who incorporates nuts in many of her creative projects, screens at Alamo Downtown on Wednesday night. Director/producer Don Bernier will be in attendance.
- Want to see two good low-budget films about sex and raise money for another film at the same time? On Thursday night, you can catch a double-feature of Dear Pillow (shown above) and Kissing on the Mouth. The directors of both films, local filmmaker Bryan Poyser and Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg, will attend the event and raffle off some great film-geek prizes. Proceeds will fund The Best Day Ever, a short directed by Poyser.
- Another great film this week at Alamo South Lamar's Summer Kids' Camp: Labyrinth, the 1986 Jim Henson film with Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. Labyrinth screens Monday through Friday afternoon and admission is free.
