Artistic Differences Cost Depp a Director
Filed under: Drama, Warner Brothers, Newsstand
Late last year, the news broke that Johnny Depp was to star in Shantaram, an Eric Roth-penned adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' novel of the same name. The novel is a story of drug addiction, armed robbery, prison and other similarly romantic subjects, and is based on Roberts' real-life experiences in Melbourne, Bombay, and Germany; it's thought that the movie will focus on Roberts' time in Bombay, where, among other things, he acted as a slum doctor and dabbled in organized crime.Reportedly driven almost entirely by Depp's passion -- it was at his urging that Warner Brother's dropped $2 million on the rights to the story -- the movie was originally to be directed by Australian helmer Peter Weir, he of Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously fame (and Green Card infamy, though I admit I sorta liked it). This morning, though, Variety reported that Weir has left the project. Depending on who you believe, Weir and Depp either disagreed over the direction of the film and parted amicably, or Weir was so out in left field with his interpretation that he had no one in the studio on his side, and finally just moved on. Either way, the movie has a star and a new rewrite (which Roth penned and Weir supervised), now all the cast needs is someone to tell it what to do. The hope is that production will being next spring.

The most obvious choice to direct this is Indian helmer Dev Benegal last known to be have his project Road, Movie an official selection at Cannes 2006.
It's classic that the studios overlooked the one guy who knows Shantaram territory inside out. Depp should open his eyes.

Why does the press say "Warner Brothers" when the company's correct name is "Warner Bros."?

Definately a project that Depp fans and true movie lovers would be very excited to see the actor star in and direct. Johnny is a very seasoned actor of many many dark, deep, mysterious and very romantic characters. Directing a film with such strong and vivid attributes of his point of view, as well as gracing it with his prescence, promises to become a great cult film as well as it would mark another incredible gift that all of us Depp fans know he has in him!!

As Forrest Gump said, "I think maybe it's both"; presumably Depp and Weir were amicable in their split, and it certainly wouldn't be the first time that a bunch of moronic studio heads botched a project! They probably wanted some jackass like John Hughes to direct it...

Seems like Johnny is on to something... Modern life pirates could be his next subject. His help can jump overboard but the project keeps its course, with some other ideas in the back of their minds. This could bounce all around until "Fear and Loathing" becomes Hunter's life story on film, in another project. This seems only like a warm-up. ARRR... Is Enron involved?

Johnny Depp is flawless. In his choices of roles, character development, and execution of performance. Im sure he made the right choice again, here. Im glad that when he saw a difference of visions, he worked to solve it by changing directors. Im sure his wisdom will clearly show when the project is finished!

LOL....the person who wrote comment #4...You are probably right on the split. I disagree on one thing though. As far as the studio picking a director, I bet they have there heart set on someone like..michael moore. Let's call it the short list!
Let's see, what other directors are basically outcast in hollywood???

Wait let me guess what happened here. Depp wanted to play it like a crazy british guy and the director said Johnny thats what you do in everyone of your movies. You have to be someone else in this show, let me tell you about the wonderful thing called acting.

On a personal level, I would pay to see a Johnny Depp film if he did nothing but look at the camera. Who knows why a director leaves. In a business I worked in for many years, it's just show business. Thanks for reading my input. Sandra

Has everyone else forgotten 21 Jump Street? Please, Johnny Depp is far from being a genius. Just another overrated actor, who being a little off kilter has earned him more fame.
And please, someone tell the man, the grunge look is so 1998.

In the past I have had my doubts about the roles and movies Johnny Depp has chosen to alliance himself with, but every doubt has always been relieved by a rapturous performance and execution of character that he has always been able to present.
An example? The Corpse Bride. A movie about a living man who becomes affianced with a dead woman while still engaged to a living woman? It sounds so creepy and the story idea could easily be paired with the likes of "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians." However, it became apparent that Depp knew what he was getting into when that movie managed to bring a tear to my eye and somehow seem completely... un-weird.
In situations like these, when Johnny Depp wants a movie to be made... it should be made. If a director has left, be it on any terms, then it must be for the good of the movie. Just trust in the Depp, and good will prevail. ;-)

Well, Let's see, in Pirate's Depp did Keith Richards for an hour and a half. As Wonka he did a Michael Jackson (but hates kids) for an hour and a half, who could he impersonate for this film? Maybe Hollywierd could start a new fund raiser and buy him some originality?
Here is a man, Peter Wier, who brought us, Master and Commander, Witness, Gallipoli, Cast Away, Dead Poet’s Society, Mr. Holland’s Opus, The Truman Show, who is about to bring us War Magician, and has had 11 nominations for best director. Maybe, just maybe, he had enough of Depp’s addled pot head brain and decided to continue giving us class acts.
