Cars' Weekend Brings Out the Doomsayers
Filed under: Animation, Disney, Box Office, Family Films, Newsstand
Despite the fact that Cars topped the weekend box office in the US, Pixar-watchers are freaking out a little bit. It turns out that, thanks to an alarmingly slow Sunday, the movie made just $60.1 million over its first three days, not the previously estimated $62.8 million. While most of us would be plenty happy with a $60 million payday, that total places Cars only fourth of Pixar's seven releases in terms of first-weekend earnings, and suggests that the always-crucial word of mouth on the film is not so good. The (small) wave of panic was not limited to the industry, either: Early yesterday, Disney stock was down 3.5% (it closed the day off 1.9%), indicating that shareholders are disturbingly obsessed with the box office. Their antsy-ness, however, is probably understandable, given that Cars is the first Pixar product released since the company was purchased by Disney and, though it was made before the buyout, the film is nevertheless being seen as barometer of the public's attitude towards the studio and its films.

I LOVED this movie. In fact, it might be one of my favorite pixar movies of all time. IT was sweet and funny and in my opinion was actually good for children to see. Some kids movies are either packed with annoying and disgusting fart-joke type comments or are filled with inappropriate material and language with such comments as "bite me". But i actually think this would be a GREAT family movie for everyone to sit back and enjoy!!! A+++++

I LOVED this movie. I took my two daughters, ages 6 and 4, to see it yesterday. We all laughed the entire time. My oldest commented, "We are SO going to buy this movie when it comes out!" This is probably my all-time favorite Pixar movie, thus far. We're going back this weekend just so my husband can see it. A phenomenal family movie. A definite A+++++

I LOVED Holly and Jen's comments on this blog entry. Usually they come from regular people with their own uninformed opinions, but reading studio moles shower their own films with unabashed praise in a public forum, pretending to be anonymous citizens is something else again. These are probably my favorite commenters so far. A+++++++!!!!111one

I love love love this movie. i've seen it 3 times already. the first time i seen it was at a drive-in and that night was so busy they said it was the most people they've ever had. i can't wait till it comes out on DVD and video. i will buy it first thing no matter how much it costs. the movie is worth a billion dollars if it was up to me. Cinderella, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars (Cars being #1) are the best Disney movies ever!!!!!!!!!
