A Movie About Missy
Filed under: Drama, Music & Musicals, Casting, Deals, Universal, Newsstand
Apparently inspired by the relative success of such rap biopics as 50 (rest assured I'm thinking "Fitty" as I type that) Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' and 8 Mile, which Variety seems to suggest was based on Eminem's life, Universal has picked up the rights to a movie based on the life of Missy Elliot. Written by Dianne Houston but developed with the help of both Missy and her manager, the movie will be produced by well-known rap lover Robert De Niro and his partner Jane Rosenthal via their Tribeca Films banner. The film has no title or director yet, but it's understood that Missy, whose previous screen appearances have been limited to a couple of supporting roles so small they're basically cameos, will star. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be deliriously happy if Hype Williams directed the thing. All he'd have to do is put Missy back in that garbage bag suit from the video for The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) and bust out the fisheye lens for an hour and a half or so -- don't tell me that wouldn't be a better movie than, say, White Girls.

This project sounds interesting...
Although Hype Williams would be a natural fit given his experience as a music video director it seems that rap biopics like Get Rich or Die Tryin and 8 Mile tend to sign Oscar-nominated directors to helm the project. Maybe George Clooney, Paul Haggis or even Taylor Hackford could direct this picture...
I'm still waiting for Hype Williams to make another film - I was a fan of Belly... and I would be a liar if I said that I wasn't a little sad to find out that Hype Williams was no longer on board to direct a live action Speed Racer. While I think that Hype Williams would incorporate a creative style for Speed Racer, I'm looking forward to the Wachowski Brother's interpretation of this popular cartoon (thanks Cinematical)
Let's hope that Hype Williams is still planning on doing a Superfly remake...

i wonder how there going to make missy look like she tops the scale at 300 like she used to because if they make her skinny through the whole thing im not going to go see it because she was fat and thats why i thought she was as influential as she was
