Freddy Krueger Returns to DVD
Filed under: Classics, Horror, New Line, Home Entertainment
So you thought that after buying that 8-disc mega-huge DVD set a few years back that you were done giving Freddy Krueger your DVD dollars? Well, HA to that, says New Line Cinema, who'll soon be offering us an all-new Infinifilm Edition of Wes Craven's original A Nightmare on Elm Street.Boasting new documentaries, featurettes, and the cinematicus-interruptus goodness that is Infinifilm, the new-fangled Elm Street DVD will hit the shelves on September 26th. No word on the sequels just yet, but if sales are good, you just know you'll be forking out another 16 bucks when The Dream Child: Infinifilm shows up. Us horror fans are so damn loyal it makes the studio marketing brigades just drool out loud.
Also in New Line news, as Martha reported back in April, the Final Destination 3 DVD will allow you to jumble the movie up and watch it in whatever order you wish, a new feature that must just freakin' thrill the MPEG to no end.

I'll never understand why people bitch about DVD re-releases. I'm sure, from my experience in the music business, they happen when the warehouse stock of the old DVD dips low. The company realizes by spending a small amount of money (compared to the overall cost of manufacturing a new 300,000 or so dvds) they can spiff up their old product, get it on the new release racks at the stores, and get some more sales. What's wrong with that? Just don't buy it if you don't want it.

Did I come off like I was bitching? My bad. I may have employed a "here we go again" tone with this post, but you can rest assured that this new Freddy DVD will soon be a part of my collection.
I take the "double dips" on a case-by-case basis (and since I write reviews for DVDTalk, I see tons of these releases). If a new version has some seriously improved features / technical specs, then I'm first in line to get a copy. If, however, the re-release offers, like, 3 minutes of deleted scenes jammed back into the movie (and a bunch of recycled extras), then that's a lame-ass release.
Fortunately this new Freddy DVD looks like an example of the former and not the latter.
