Hauer to Direct Van Hall's List
Filed under: Drama, Independent, Casting, Newsstand, Cinematical Indie
The trades reported this morning that leather-faced, hitchhiking replicant Rutger Hauer is about to make his feature directorial debut with a film entitled Changing Fortunes, in which he'll also appear (but not necessarily star). The movie will tell the true-life story of Dutch banker Walraven van Hall who, during World War II, "created an ingenious funding scheme to support tens of thousands of people -- irrespective of race, creed or political leaning -- in Nazi-occupied Holland." (And then was discovered and shot to death by Nazis. Just in case you were hoping the movie wouldn't be incredibly depressing.)According to Hauer, Changing Fortunes is not about the war, it just happens to be set during that time. Instead, the film's primary concern will be to explore "how an individual can truly change the world for the better, and [show] the sacrifices that a person is prepared to make to realize such a change." The film, a Dutch/UK/Belgian coproduction, has a budget of just over $11 million and will head into pre-production early next year.

Sounds like "Schindler's List" with a bad ending. Then again, it's always nice to hear about good flowering amidst evil. Perhaps, also, Hauer can redeem himself from his last horrible role in the TV remake of "The Poseidon Adventure" (not the remake "Poseidon"). That was truly bad.

So glad to see Rutger coming back to the spotlight! He was perhaps the most solid and underrated actor of the 80's and has nowadays drifted away from the mainstream. I hope this project turns out succesful!

hauer is an unrecognised force of talent.... remember him with michelle pfiffer? the horror film he did as a blind protaganist? over the years, his talent has gone unappreciated... he is like gene hackman, who finally.... after years and years of playing major parts is being seen.. and noted... i am looking forward to the effects of this movie on the public... i trully wish him well.... after all.. he has the best blue eyes since newman.....

Rutger Hauer is a great actor - perhaps often not in the best of films, but they are of his chosing. Yes he was perfect in Ladyhawke - but also perfect in Smallvile. Good luck to him in the future years.

True Rutger Hauer is a very underrated and under recognised actor/talent. Its a shame he's passed so many people by but withis recent works maybe he'll get his 'second wind'. Really pleased to hear about this directing debut of his and I wish him all the best with it.
