Jack Black Still Wants Green Lantern
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek
This continues to be a very, very strange association in my mind. Jack Black is a funny man, and I actually enjoy him as an actor. The Green Lantern is a great super hero, and there's a giant poster of golden age Green Lantern gracing the wall of my study. So to sum of these brief thoughts: I like Jack Black. I like the Green Lantern. So why am I so afraid of the two of them joined together? The best explanation I can think of is another example. I love dill pickles. I also love death by chocolate ice cream. Under no circumstances would I ever want my dbc served with dill pickle topping. Two delightful experiences, but delightful for separate reasons which do not easily overlap. And yet, Jack Black persists in being interested in a Green Lantern movie project. He was recently giving a radio interview, and mentioned that he'd still like to earn the project a green light (green light for Green Lantern, oh I'm SO clever I should write headlines for the NY Times). According to Superhero Hype, Black is still trying to get a developed script and apparently still has at least some interest maintained over at Warner Brothers. My hope for seeing a GL movie is confused and tainted by my fear of Jack Black being involved. What to do, what to do?

No Way!!! I am a chick that has been bugging everyone for years about how there should be a Green Lantern movie, BUT, HOLY GEEZ, MAN! JACK BLACK? Absolutely NOT! The guy is a freakin' funny man, but he is definitely not GL material! Jack is not a handsome man and will never even get close to being one. Cute, yes, but the Green Lantern should be stong, tall, handsome and verile! Viggo Mortensen, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Jensen Ackles or the extremely hot Patrick Flueger from The 4400 - These men would be spectacular! But, Jack Black, no, you sir, you are NO Green Lantern!

whoa jae....ben affleck as green lantern????? evidently you didn't see him in daredevil...which he completely, let me repeat...COMPLETELY jacked up...first of all, daredevil was a strawberry blonde...second of all, daredevil was slim...third of all, daredevil was smart and dignified, none of which ben affleck is (you can tell because he dated that skank j-lo and almost married the little bronx/queens floozie)....but anyway, my choice for green lantern is someone that has some athleticism in his body and is dignified...and since the new green lantern is black...why not choose a black guy? i nominate "mekhi phifer"...that would put a pep in the step of the role :)

The Green Lantern as a character is not popularly known amongst the general cinema going public. In fact, the Green Hornet is probably better known. Since the superhero is a "B" player, it is not a travesty if Jack Black portrays the character. And this geek "outcry" is ridiculous considering DC's arguably flagship character - Superman - is being paraded back to the silver screen and featuring an actor who was fired from a soap opera (and sports a physical stature that is anything close to super) in the title role and also suffers from a shaven Kevin Spacey hamming it up to the epic proportions of Gene Hackman's former performances in the same role.
Even with Jack Black, I doubt this project will come even close to swirling around the proverbial toilet bowl like *Batman & Robin*, *Catwoman*, *Elektra*, or *Spawn* did in their cinematic outings. That is, unless Uwe Boll lands himself in the director's chair through some grandiose contract drawn up by Old Scratch himself.

Direct? Sounds Ok.
Write? Terrific.
Star as GL? A positively sinister idea ...

Jack Black as Greeen Lantern? Oh no please no!! that is as dumb as dumb gets. DC comics are trying to come into the new millenia with their characters. Superman - someone ribbing about them using s SOAP OPERA actor in the role? HISTORY LESSON what do you think christopher Reeve did before he got the role - SOAP OPERA thats right. Spacey as luthor? Spacey can play ANYTHING and do a great job HAckman had his own spin on it As will Spacey. For GL they need a character that has a prescence on screen because GL had a prescence even if he was a minor playera young Denzel would have been perfect Mekhi? no close but no DMX would, believe it or not, I think he could poull it off he actually can act and if given the chance he would make it work and that would be bank because all the hip hop and rap fans will flock to it because of who he isand imagine him pulling off a theme song to it or maybe Tyrese could do it. anyway they need the right actor to pull it off. I mean Tobey was I thought the right choice for Spiderman because Peter Parker was a geek. matt Damon as Jason Bourne was brilliant( I know not a comic book but still a title )

see, if they turn GL into a comedy, ok fine. I'll be mildly peeved because there's so much material for a big ol intergalactic trilogy(since we haven't had a good one since the early 80s). However, I've been waiting for Black to find material "right" enough for him as his roles in Heat Vision and Jack(as shortlived as it was) and High Fidelity were. I really didn't enjoy him in Kong, and things like Shallow Hal and Nacho Libre make me puke in my mouth a little. It would certainly be an interesting departure for DC, and there's no reason they can't try something new and different. It's really not all that different from Kieth Giffen's comedic take on the JLA.

ok micheal kerns....dmx...i can see that..and i can also see a "young" denzel, which would have been my first choice but seeing as he's around 50 now it wouldn't work...but remember...the new green lantern has hair...dmx would have to grow some..so i think that leaves him out...so now we're left with the old green lantern...which would work if they found an anonymous white actor that was slim yet muscular and they got the hair right....i'm sure the special effects would be out of this world and it would work quite well....but even more to the point if you went with the new green lantern...."tyrese" would be perfect...he's got the physique...and he can grow hair :)

the jeremy? gene hackman did nothing for the role of lex luther....he was about as good as anyone can be...i'm sure kevin spacey can play a much more sinister villain...if you really want a villain to compare him to....try "jack nicholson" as the joker in the first remake of batman from 1989...i doubt anyone will ever be able to best his performance in that role as a villain...it actually made the whole movie....you know what they say...you can't have a great hero in a movie/story unless your villain is so vile that you're the only one that can stop him

Jack should play Kilowog, and no other member of the Green Lantern Corps. Maybe Jim Carrey as G'Nort? Hmm...

there are a lot of other green lanterns, not just the good looking hal jordan that we're all familiar with. i think jack black can play a few of those gl's. although i think that a gl lantern movie featuring a green lantern other than hal jordan would definitely suck.
check this site out to see the other gl's --> http://www.glcorps.org/book.html
i think he can play green lantern kkrudd! hahaha!

Jack Black's forte is humor, not a serious role.
I'm not even a DC fan and I do not want to see Jack
Black portray/butcher Green Lantern.

Geek FYI - The black Green Lantern is not new. John Stewart has been around off and on since the early 1970's. He's just gotten more face time since the JL cartoon features that GL.

Hey, guys,
I have to say that I'm just not used to seeing a black Green Lantern. It drives me crazy and I know it has been explained very well about him, but it just doesn't work in my mind. And before I get a big kick from everyone -- I am a black female, so I'm not trying to be an idiot, it just that I grew up with GL looking like, well, Viggo. But, if I had to pick a hot African American actor to play GL I think it would have to be Mekhi or Taye Diggs. Both of them are just excellent. And about Ben A. Yes, I know he's an idiot, but I like the guy. I'm terrified of that Daman creature, but Ben is hilarious -- not a great actor by any means but just funny in that Kevin Smith kind of way. And as for Jack Black, if he could 'produce' a film that's not sickeningly stupid, I could probably sit through that. I keep imagining him as a teen in The Neverending Story II! Does anyone else have any suggestions for the role of GL?
Jae

I'll tell you who would make the perfect Green Lantern. Isaiah Washington (Dr. Burke) of Grey's Anatomy. Not only does he have the physique and presence, he also has spent four years in the Air Force. He would be able to command the role easily and believably.

Hey Paul!
I LOVE Isaah Washington! I didn't know he was on Grey's Anatomy. I might actually have to watch it. (Although I'd feel like I was betraying ER...LOL!)
Isaah is very talented and I WOULD watch him in anything.

Jack Black = Green Lantern. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO. Get the message, Warner Bros ?
That would be the worst casting decision since casting Ben Affleck in...well just casting Ben Affleck in anything.
My personal pick for Hal Jordan ? Gale Harold who brilliantly played the arrogant Brian Kinney in Queer as Folk. Afterall, Hal Jordan is arrogance personified and Gale was brilliant in that TV series.
My pick for Kyle Rayner ? An Australian actor named Paul O'Brien (Jack Holden in a series called Home and Away). Who says all super heroes have to be American anyway ?
(Hugh Jackman, case in point)
