Depp Wants POTC 4-6?

Movie studios love the sequel. If they can find any good excuse for churning out a part two, you can bet they will. Frequently, we see the box office returns fall off when studios go back to the well, but sometimes they hit a success and begin dreaming of a trilogy. For whatever reason, three is a nice, round number for film installments to come in. After three one generally finds the franchise dying out for any number of reasons -- audience fatigue, ballooning budgets, actors tired of playing the same characters, etc. But every great now and then, a film franchise takes off and we get an entire chain of movies. Harry Potter has done it very successfully, and Narnia is certainly making a push to be the next. And now it seems as though Johnny Depp would like to add Pirates of the Caribbean to the club. Depp was very emphatic about it, as a matter of fact, saying "[Jack Sparrow is] a blast to play, I'll be in a deep, dark depression saying goodbye to him ... Maybe 'Pirates 4, 5 and 6'. If they had a good script, why not? I mean, at a certain point, the madness must stop, but for the moment, I can't say that he's done."Honestly, the only thing that could slow Depp down would be audience fatigue ... and I'm not sure I see that happening. Perhaps the movie-going public will have had enough of Captain Jack after two more summers of Pirates, but I suspect we'll all be saying the same thing as Depp; why does it have to stop now? It's not like the high seas lack for entertaining popcorn-action story lines, after all.

It seems like Hollywood may be entering the era of the mega-franchises, where multiple sequels of movies are being released theatrically.
Aside from Star Wars, this has to be a unique phenomenon in Hollywood. Sure horror films had their endless sequels but those went straight to VHS (or sometimes DVD).
Landing one of these "endless franchises" could be a studio's potential cash cow, especially now that people are beginning to think that DVD sales will dwindle in the upcoming years.

I had had enough of Captain Jack about 15 minutes in. Normally I can just ignore over-the-top crappy acting, but when it's rewarded by a best actor nomination it really chafes.
I turn on POTC after all the critical acclaim expecting some great writing and performances, and instead I get an overrated Tango & Cash.

Okay, I can't even imagine what they'd do for another three movies, but the writers are pretty good, the acting by... well, everyone is fantastic. Unlike a previous comment about Johnny Depp playing over the top for the role -- which, by the way was perfect and I absolutely love his character-- is enjoyable and he is a tremendously skilled actor.
Star Wars really didn't need the prequel triliogy (Was I the only one bored by the films? The acting, though they had a decent cast, was terrible, and the writing even worse.) It seemed to me like Lucas only did it for the money. They were guarenteed box office hits and the only movie that was even partically decent was the second one and that's being polite. Sometimes I can see why franchises really shouldn't have more than the originally intended amount of movies, but if they can pull it off, I'm up for it.
